Julius-K9 UK LTD KAD Kids Around Dogs

Julius-K9 Paw Patrol harness review.

I was delighted to receive a JuliusK9 Paw Patrol harness for Monty, our school therapy dog to test.

Paw Patrol Design
The JuliusK9 Paw Patrol harnesses all come in bright colours that coordinate with the different Paw Patrol characters. The harness we received is the red and yellow Marshall version which captured the interest of a group of reception children with speech and language difficulties. As a result they were eager to engage me in conversation about their favourite Paw Patrol characters.

The Children’s Viewpoint
Year 4 children wrote reviews of the JuliusK9 Paw Patrol harness and agreed that they loved the bright colours and thought that younger children would like the characters too. They also decided that Monty would be comfortable in it because of the padding although they were a little concerned that the chest strap might not let him lie down and rest. They thought that the handle was a good idea and liked the large, easy to use D ring.

The Adult’s Viewpoint
The JuliusK9 Paw Patrol harness is well made and sturdy with a padded back piece and strong straps. There is a handle on the back to allow the dog to be held, and a large, easily accessible D ring to clip a lead onto. The harness is easy to put on, once the initial adjustments to strap length have been made. The ease of harnessing the dog means that supervised children can be given this task. They can clip the lead on themselves too. Unfortunately, Monty’s body shape isn’t as well suited to this harness as other dog breeds might be. As a 16kg spaniel, Monty falls between sizes with his deep but narrow chest. As a result, the chest strap is a little looser than is ideal, even at its smallest adjusted size. That being said, Monty certainly seems comfortable wearing the harness out on walks and his shoulder movement doesn't seem to be restricted. The harness also feels secure when he is on lead.

I am so proud of Bridget. Before the Fear of Dogs course she was so frightened by dogs that she would scream and run into the road to avoid them. By the last session, she was able to walk Monty, feed him treats from her hand and was also able to pass other dogs. Well done Bridget and thank you for the lovely gift!

Owning a reactive dog is difficult. By giving reactive dogs and their owner the space to pass, we can make things easier for both of them.

In the photograph I have taken the dogs off the path to allow a reactive on-lead dog to pass. I have trained Fraggle my dog-reactive cavapoo to return to me when he sees a another dog. As you can see, Fraggle is happily concentrating on me, awaiting his reward. Monty the spaniel who is not reactive was recalled to 'middle' (between my legs) so that the other dog could pass easily with plenty of space.

Please check your fences! It has been very windy overnight and dogs can easily escape through blown down panels.

Monty had a lovely evening visiting the 30th Warrington West Squirrel Scouts

The children learned that dogs like to be stroked on their back and chest but most don't like their head, legs or tail touched.

Monty is very gentle but if your child is a little worried about giving treats to a dog, the ball-thrower lets them give treats without having to put their hands close to the dog's mouth. Monty enjoyed lots of treats!

Thank you to leaders and Squirrels for inviting us.

Muzzle training is something you should consider for all dogs, not just XL Bullies. Dogs can get distressed if you try to muzzle them without showing them that the muzzle isn't scary, so follow these steps to make it easier on you and your dog.

If you would like help with muzzle training your dog, contact Teach Dogs.

The Government has announced the ban of XL Bully breeds in England... and I am sad.

I feel we let dogs down.

While all the real issues which are leading to the dog-related injuries and fatalities are still going to carry on as they were.

Once again, people and the Government are just repeating the same thing, not seeing how unhelpful that is, not being interested in making a real change, that will solve the problem.

We need to do better... please, let's do better... if you feel the way I do, please get in touch with your local MPs. They still have the final vote. Make your voice heard, speak on behalf of dogs, who can’t!

We need to let our MPs know that there are real solutions, and that united, those solutions will be the final ones!

An excellent article to remind us of the risks for our pooches in this unseasonably warm weather. Many of us know that flat faced breeds are at greater risk of heat stroke than the average dog but it was a surprise for me to discover that springers and labradors are also at an increased risk.

Temperatures are soaring around the UK

It doesn't matter how careful we are - sometimes accidents happen.

Yesterday, Fraggle managed to find himself at Westbrook Vets. The little menace ate some fruitcake containing sultanas which are very poisonous to dogs - even one can kill some dogs.
Several hours later we had a very sorry looking little man at home having been given an injection to make him throw up the sultanas. Then he was given yucky black stuff to make sure that any toxins weren't absorbed into his body.

It is so easy to think that 'just one' grape, raisin or sultana won't hurt them but it really isn't worth the risk: we just don't know how much is toxic for each individual dog. It is always best to consult your vet than risk your pet's life.

Thanks to rapid treatment by Westbrook Vets - Warrington who I can't praise enough, Fraggle should be fine.

Photo below of Fraggle who seems none the worse for his 'adventure'.

Are you, or someone you know, scared of dogs?

Recent years have seen an increase in dog ownership with 27% of UK adults owning at least one pet dog (PDSA2022). As a result, more and more locations are becoming dog friendly. This is great news for dog owners but not for someone who has a fear of dogs.

Dog friendly cafes, pubs and shopping areas have become venues to avoid. Parks and beaches where off-lead dogs are common are especially difficult - days out are filled with anxiety and tension rather than being full-filled adventures.

If this is your reality, there is hope! Your life can change for the better!

It is too hot to walk the dogs today. Scattering kibble into a shaded area of long grass for them to sniff out will give them some mental stimulation out of the sun.
They'll get their walk this evening when it is cooler.
