🍂 Autumn Alert: Watch Out for Acorns & Conkers! 🌰

As autumn takes hold and more leaves fall, squirrels are busy gathering their winter supplies. It’s important to remember the dangers that acorns and conkers pose to our dogs during walks.

🌳 Acorns
Acorns contain tannins, which can cause vomiting, diarrhoea (sometimes bloody), and in severe cases, liver or kidney damage. They also present physical dangers, such as choking hazards or blockages, particularly for smaller dogs.

🌰 Conkers (Horse Chestnuts)
Conkers contain a toxic compound called aesculin, which can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, and, in severe cases, tremors or collapse. Like acorns, conkers can also cause choking or intestinal blockages.

🐕 Prevention
Avoid walking near oak or horse chestnut trees to protect your dog during autumn. Keep your dog on a lead in high-risk areas, and teach them commands like "leave it" or "drop." Regularly check your garden for fallen nuts to remove potential risks.

Contact your vet immediately if you suspect your dog has ingested acorns or conkers. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed by a professional. It’s always better to be safe and take action quickly!

Just over 3 years ago, Pablo adopted his human family and we are delighted to share that Pablo’s Dad, John Harbisher, has chosen us as his charity for his first ever marathon run. On 20th October he will embark on the York Marathon. He reports that training is going well and he is aiming for around 4.5 hours for completion.

We are happy to support John by sharing his JustGiving page in case anyone can spare a few pounds in support.

We will report on how John is getting on a little nearer the time, but in the meantime, we thank you John, so very much for thinking of us and supporting our work 🙏🙏🙏

🍂 Autumn Dog Walking Hazards to Watch Out For! 🍁

Autumn is well and truly here, so it’s important to know the seasonal dangers that could affect your furry friend. Here are 6 things to keep an eye on during your walks:

❄️ Antifreeze - Watch out for spills near parked cars – it's highly toxic to dogs.

🌚 Dark Evenings - Use reflective gear or clip-on lights to keep your dog safe and visible.

🎆 Fireworks - Loud bangs can be stressful for dogs, so plan walks before dark and create a quiet space at home.

🐾 Ticks & Alabama Rot - Check for ticks after walks and clean off any mud as soon as possible.

🍄 Wild Mushrooms - Many types of fungi are toxic to dogs, so it's best to keep your dog away from all wild mushrooms.

🍃 Wet Leaves - Hidden bacteria, mold, and even lungworm-carrying slugs or snails can lurk here.

We love our autumnal walks with our dogs, but it's key to stay vigilant and keep them on leads when necessary. Contact your vet immediately if you're worried that your dog may have ingested something harmful.
