Frosty Grass & Laminitis Risk...

Frosty mornings may look beautiful, but for our laminitis prone horses and ponies, they bring hidden dangers. While it’s tempting to believe melted frost means safe grazing, that’s not the full story. Here's what you need to know:

🌱 Sugar Build Up:
On bright, sunny days, grass produces sugars through photosynthesis, storing them overnight. When temperatures drop below 5°C, grass respiration (which uses those sugars) halts, leaving sugar levels dangerously high for laminitics.

⚠️ Management Tips:
Avoid grazing during bright, cold spells until overnight temps stay above 5°C or cloudy weather returns.
Feed low NSC hay (under 10%). Soak to reduce sugars effectively.
Offer slightly warm drinking water to encourage hydration and prevent impaction colic.

❄️ Additional Risk Factors:
Hard ground sensitivity - Use hoof boots for protection and circulation.
PPID horses - Rug appropriately as they struggle to regulate body temperature.
For good-doers - balance warmth and weight loss by monitoring rugs carefully.

💡 Diet Adjustments:
Limit hard feed and focus on fibre.
Balance the diet with a broad spectrum supplement or balancer to provide essential nutrients.

Remember, a little extra care now helps protect your horse from the risks of frosty weather.

Yes, you should consider giving your horse or pony electrolytes in the winter ❄️

Hydration - Cold weather can make it harder for horses to drink water, which can lead to dehydration. Electrolytes can help stimulate a horse's thirst and encourage them to drink more.

Sweat loss - Horses can still sweat in the winter, especially if they're exercising or working hard. Sweat contains electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and chloride, which need to be replenished.

Hay - In the winter, horses are likely to eat more hay, which is low in sodium. Electrolytes can help maintain sodium levels.

You can add electrolytes to your horse's feed or water. If you add electrolytes to their water, you should also provide a separate bucket of fresh water so they can choose. You can check the feeding instructions on the electrolyte product to see how much to give your horse based on their workload and how much they sweat.

How will I know if my horse is getting too many electrolytes?
Signs that your horse might be getting too many electrolytes include excessive drinking and urinating.

As temperatures start to drop those days will soon arrive where pipes at the yard will freeze if they're not insulated properly.
So a little reminder to wrap exposed water pipes to protect against freezing. If your water supply is prone to freezing, fill large water containers in the evenings so you’ll have fresh water on hand each morning, even when temperatures drop.

And if possible have a kettle filled with water ready to boil or take a flask of hot water with you to the yard to poor over a frozen tap!
