To rug or not to rug, that is the question??

It's that time of year again when we start to think about rugging our horses.

There's a handy guide below if you are unsure and need some guidance 👇

The 608 Guide to Rugging your Horse 🐴

We’ve reached that time of year where the daily conversation on the yard is, “What rug are you putting on tonight?” 😜

With the temperatures so variable, it can be hard to know what to do day-by-day. It’s easy to think that just because we’re at the stage where we need an extra layer, our horses do too - but that’s not necessarily the case!

Overrugging a horse can result in several undesirable consequences, including:
🔵 Heat stress
🔵 Skin issues
🔵 Harder to manage weight
🔵 For horses living out over winter, rugging too early can stop or slow their natural coat growing

We’ve put together this handy guide to help you next time you’re deliberating over what rug to put on!

This is just intended as a guide - multiple factors can affect a horse’s individual rug requirements, including their age, general condition, their workload and access to forage. If you require more specific advice on your individual horse, our vets will be happy to help!

Your horse feeling fresher in the autumn could be a natural response to some of the following environmental and physiological changes.

1. Less heat stress: During the summer, horses can become lethargic due to heat and humidity. In autumn, the cooler air reduces heat stress, allowing horses to exert themselves more easily, which can lead to an apparent boost in energy levels.

2. Changes in daylight: Horses are sensitive to changes in daylight hours, which may affect their biological rhythms. As daylight decreases in autumn, it can influence a horse's hormone levels, potentially making them feel more alert and lively.

3. Cooler temperatures: Horses, especially those with thick coats or larger builds, tend to be more comfortable in cooler weather. In the autumn, when temperatures drop from the summer highs, horses are less likely to overheat during exercise. Cooler weather makes them feel more invigorated, leading to a more energetic performance.

4. Dietary changes: In some cases, horses may get access to richer pasture or supplemental feed as grass quality declines in the autumn. This nutritional boost can contribute to increased energy.

5. Natural instincts: In the wild, horses prepare for winter by conserving energy during the warmer months and becoming more active in cooler periods as part of their survival mechanism.

During autumn, sycamore seeds start to fall onto pastures....

Dodson & Horrell have provided a comprehensive guide to managing sycamore seeds, see below 👇

Autumn means one thing... Sycamore seeds 🍁

During autumn, sycamore seeds start to fall onto pastures. Seed spread is often wide due to the ‘helicopter’ shape, meaning that any gusts of wind take them further than desired (especially by horse owners!). The seeds that have fallen during autumn then produce saplings in the following spring, with large amounts being produced they are often readily eaten by horses and ponies, especially if grass is in short supply.

Why do we need to remove seeds?
Atypical myopathy, also known as sycamore poisoning, is a result of consuming sycamore seeds and saplings. This potentially fatal muscle disorder is due to a toxin within the seed, known as hypoglycin A (HGA). HGA limits or can stop energy production in muscle cells, particularly affecting the heart and muscles that allow the horse to stand and breathe. The onset of this is rapid, and so it is important to regularly check your pasture and neighbouring areas for sycamore plants and seeds. If grazing options are limited and seeds are present, make sure to remove as many as possible to reduce the risk.

During spring, if saplings have grown, they should be mowed and the cuttings removed as HGA is still present even after it has been cut. In autumn, aim to limit the number of seeds your horse eats by either grazing your horse in another field that is free from sycamore trees, or if this is not possible, fencing off areas around sycamore trees, although you will still need to be vigilant for seeds spread by the wind. To further avoid the risk of sycamore seed consumption, ensure horses have access to an adequate supply of forage if grass is in short supply. Reducing the number of horses per pasture is also a great way of increasing the grass available per horse, and so reducing the risk of atypical myopathy.

Allen & Page Calm & Condition is now rebranded to Compete & Condition - see post below to explain about the rebrand...

When Calm & Condition launched in 2001, it provided owners with an alternative to the high cereal content, high starch, and sugar competition feeds available on the market. Quickly becoming a very popular choice, Calm & Condition fell into the low starch and sugar bracket for competition/conditioning feeds for a long time.

As our understanding of horses’ dietary requirements has developed feeds have moved towards high fibre, very low starch and sugar content. Calm & Condition’s place in the market has shifted from our only high-calorie, low-starch feed to one better suited for horses in higher levels of work. Due to these reasons and to ensure owners select the most beneficial feed for their horses, we have decided to rename Calm & Condition to Compete & Condition- the same great feed but with a new name.

Just when you thought you'd have to wait another 11 months for all things Hanbury Countryside Show, we bring you ...

🌟 🚜 🐎💪 Debut Tractor Pull & Tractor Run Event 💪🐎🚜🌟

As a society we pride ourselves on supporting local charities.

Following the challenges of this year's show, we have decided to hold a debut event in October which we hope will enable us to provide additional support to these charities.

🤩 Saturday 12th October - an afternoon of tractor pulling and entertainment on the Showground.

🤩 Sunday 13th October - our inaugural Horse Power / Tractor Run.

Come along and enjoy a bacon roll and a coffee whilst admiring the vintage tractors, machinery and vehicles who will then participate.

We are hoping to support a new charity at this event, The Matt Gallagher Foundation which supports those suffering with MND. This will be in memory of a long-standing supporter and friend of the Show, Nikki Sharp.

Further details will be released shortly. We hope as many people as possible will come along to support this debut event.
