First puppy groom for this little one yesterday 🥰

Puppy grooming
Puppy grooming is absolutely essential to help your new family member used to all the new sights and smells of puppy life. Before a full groom can be performed, allowing your puppy to spend time with their new groomer is very important. Time spent with the clippers on around them will show them the sound is nothing to be afraid of and allow them to have that all important sniff of scissors, nail clippers, brushes.

Puppy grooms can be done after they’ve had their second lot of injections. Would normally include a bath with lavender puppy shampoo, a blow dry and very minimal sc******ng usually around the eyes and buttocks. Nails can be trimmed if required too. We use Natures Groom lavender puppy shampoo, this is vegan friendly and completely natural. Lavender has long been used for its natural calming effects making it perfect for puppy’s first grooming experience.

I have found this puppy introduction absolutely crucial in aiding puppies to grow into dogs that actually enjoy being groomed and sometimes they even fall asleep whilst I do. On the other hand I have had dogs that come for their first groom at 12 months plus (teenage years) and they find the whole experience traumatic, they can become aggressive making it next to impossible to be groomed by a groomer and unfortunately would need to be put under anaesthetic by a vet to be groomed.

If there was only one piece of advice I could give dog owners, it would be to get your puppies in for a puppy groom ASAP. You will be doing your dog, your groomer and yourself the biggest favour. First full groom is recommended at 6 months.

🦷You may of noticed I’m asking everyone about teeth cleaning lately. Here’s a better explanation of what it involves and why it’s important. 🐕

We use an ultrasonic toothbrush to break down plaque and tartar without noise or vibration. The toothbrush and the toothpaste together create millions of nano bubbles and an antibacterial effect on the teeth and gums. 🐶

The photo below was after 2 sessions but you can see great results from the first go. 🦷

🐕Our dogs teeth are obviously important but are often forgotten about since they’re often out of sight and out of mind. What most people don’t know is bad oral hygiene can not only cause gum disease but other issues like heart disease too. Since some really nasty bacteria is left to grow inside their mouths and then swallowed and passed around the body.

You can add teeth cleaning at a small extra charge before plaque is present for only £15 on top of your groom, this includes puppies too, it gets them used to having their teeth brushed at a young age and as we all know prevention is better then cure. 🐶

Full teeth cleaning sessions to remove plaque are £45, currently we offering this for £30 on top of any groom. 🦷

I’m always being asked if this is worth it and I can say wholeheartedly say it 100% is. Photos below are of a dog I’ve done myself recently. 🤩

The Kennel Club, one of the UK’s biggest organisations dedicated to dog health and welfare, has welcomed the passing of a new law which will introduce a specific criminal offence for those who steal pets.

Under the Pet Abduction Bill – a Private Member’s Bill sponsored by Anna Firth MP – anyone found guilty of stealing a pet will face up to five years in prison, a fine, or both. The Bill has today (24 May) passed through its final stage in the House of Lords and will become law.

“We’re thrilled that this important Bill – which introduces a new and specific offence to tackle pet theft – will become law,” comments Dr Ed Hayes, Head of Public Affairs at The Kennel Club. “We applaud the hard and persistent work of every organisation and individual who has been raising awareness of this issue and calling for action for many years.

“Currently, the theft of a pet is treated no more seriously than the theft of a mobile phone, despite the utter heartbreak it causes. This new law is desperately needed to ensure that sentencing provisions reflect a dog’s sentience and their role within their family, as well as fully taking into account the emotional harm inflicted on the victims of this crime.”

The Kennel Club has long campaigned on the issue of pet theft, lobbying for sentencing to recognise the emotional value of a dog and for better reporting and recording from officials so that underlying causes of dog theft can be tackled. Its ‘Paw and Order’ campaign, launched after lockdown to urge action, illustrated the need for reform and spurred thousands of dog lovers across the UK to write to their MP. Statistics gathered as part of the campaign revealed the failure to tackle a crime that is devastating nearly 200 families every month, as just two per cent of dog theft cases in 2020 resulted in a criminal charge.

Here is the perfect example of why you DO NOT clip a double coated dog. This dog was clipped by an inexperienced groomer over 12 months ago. The owner was given no warning of what might happen if they did. This dogs coat may never go back to normal or will take years of effort with special treatments to get it back. Clipping alopecia is very real.

🐶Always use a qualified and experienced groomer. Ask to see certificates. Dog grooming is not currently regulated so anybody can just set up and call themselves a “dog groomer”

🐩Do your own research on your dog breed, look for the best options for your dog (there is always options)

🐕Get your dogs groomed regularly to minimise the need to clip out matts.
