Delighted with Bluff’s (Shooting Vega of Wedgnock) first field trial at the beautiful Bretby Estate, he finished in second place. Congratulations to winner Sid Davis and all others in the awards.
Thanks to our hosts, head keeper Matt, the judges, helpers, Midland Gundog Society, and FT Secretary Gary Rogers for his fantastic organisation and hard work throughout the season.
Bluff is line bred back to my FT Champion Astraglen Hail, who is behind so many of my dogs, and half brother to Cider (OFTW Marstonprior Grenadier of Wedgnock), who has qualified for this year’s Retriever Championship!

ECRS 2 Day Open Ampton 16&17 October

We held our first trial of the season, which happened to be our two day at Ampton by kind permission of Mr Peter Rushbrook. We were blessed with lovely weather on both days, sunshine and temperatures of 21 on day one and a lovely 16 on day two with light breeze.
Day one was in high thistle and wild bird mix named by one competitor as “ the grave yard” indeed it was for a few dogs, but all 24 dogs got there turn in walking through it. The guns of Geoff Allen, Jono,Martin,Brad, Rob and Paul shot brilliantly over both days. We then walked on to stubble and saw some excellent dog work.
Lunch was served in the sun for the judges guns and helpers of Alice, Richard,Dog steward Jo and picker up Craig by the wood
with an amazing chilled atmosphere and plenty of cake offered to all competitors. We finished day 1 with 10 dogs going through.
Day 2 we walked in scrub land, muck heaps and beet loosing only two dogs, and that is how it stayed. All dogs had seven retrieves and the judgKevin DoughtyhtRodger KetleyleAndy Mutimermer and Doug Laflin called it a day.
Our thanks goes to Skinners dog food for their continued support and vouchers to all three places. Alan Hammond for his patience and provider of a steady flow of birds.

First place to : Steve Richardson - Marstonprior Grenadier Of Wedgnock wining the best retrieve, guns choice, keepers choice.

2 day open retriever trial on 9th and 10th October held at Ampton bkpo of Peter Rushbrook and the line was ran beautifully by the Keeper David who had a good team of beaters with him. Judges were Keith Bedford, Terry Prentice, Peter Fulcher and Andy Mutimer. Guns shot remarkably well I believe only 2 birds were lost on the 1st day, they say guns make or break a trial and these guns certainly made the trial to give all dogs the best opportunities. A dove caused a lot of problems early on with 3 dogs being eyewiped by Peter Hurst , we were walking in turnips, white grass, fat hen and nettles for most of the morning, good marking from a lot of dogs and natural game finding ability was on show, we moved into sugar beet where a runner partridge was shot Arthur Cook's dog made light work of that, next a strong runner c**k bird which Louise Munchaus Adsboel dog made a cracking job taking it a good 150 yards, getting near the end of the 1st day Steve Richardson then did a 3 dog eyewipe on a partridge that flew on a long way, 2nd day was all to play for all dogs through done some cracking work. 2nd day was in sugarbeet, again guns were great, constant good marking by Kevin Doughty, Sara Gadd and Anna Mayhew, unfortunately we lost Stan Leathers on a towered partridge which Steve Richardson's dog made light work of, Peter, Arthur and Kevin all had short running partridges due to their dogs good marking abilities, nearing the end we lost Peter on a runner hen. Trial finished in this field all dogs picking 7 birds, speaking with competitors everyone was saying it was the best trial they had ran in for dog work, it was fantastic to watch.
Now the results,
1st Arthur Cook- Charmpark Fisher
2nd Loise Munchaus Adsboel- Ftch Skovagers six mile woodc**k
3rd Kevin Doughty- Ftch Tideshot Vinny of Highseas
4th Sara Gadd- Ftch Brindlebay Gertir Too of Birdsgreen
Com Anna Mayhew- Wauniago Dara
Com Steve Richardson- Marstonprior Grenadier of Wedgnock also taking Guns Choice

It’s been a massive honour to run Cider (FTW Marstonprior Grenadier of Wedgnock) for the England Gundog team this year at the Skinner’s World Cup, Scottish Game Fair and The Game Fair.

Now that the Internationals are over, I’d like to say a huge thank you to Skinner’s for their amazing support for the England Gundog team, and for our whole sport in general!

I’d like to thank England Team Captain Dave Latham for his leadership, organisation and support, and Louise for her hard work in the background.

I’d also like to thank my team mates for their support, (particularly when things didn’t go according to plan!), and good advice, it’s been an honour and pleasure running with you all.

It has been an awful year having lost Otto (FTCh Sothebys Choice of Wedgnock) in April, and then Cluanie (FTCh Birdsgreen Cluedo of Wedgnock) a few days after the Game Fair. To have to say unexpected good byes to two incredibly talented and wonderful dogs, (both of whom had been England Team Members since 2018), was heart breaking, they were like family members.

The thing that kept me going through all of this was the support of my lovely wife Sally, my friends, and my dogs, particularly Cider, because Otto’s his father, and Cluanie’s his grandfather, and so I still have both of them with me through him.

I knew Cider was special, (otherwise I wouldn’t have taken a two year old dog to England Team selections), and to be selected for the 2024 Skinner’s World Cup, Scottish Game Fair and The Game Fair teams was amazing!

I’m immensely proud of how Cider ran for the England Team this year, and I’m sure Otto and Cluanie will be too!

I’m glad to say that Otto’s son 18 month old Bluff (Shooting Vega of Wedgnock) is also coming on really well, so hopefully another chip off the old block!

Onwards now to the Field Trial season…

Very proud of how Cider ran at The Skinner’s World Cup. He had just had his 3rd birthday, and definitely needed his big boy pants on for this one!

I’d like to thank Skinner’s for arranging this epic weekend and for their kind sponsorship of the England team, and I’d also like to thank everyone involved in its organisation.

Huge thanks to team captain Dave Latham, Louise, and my teammates Jayne Coley, Phil Dyson, Tucker Munday and Adam Snare for all of their advice and support - we’re a great team, and look forward to running with you at the Game Fairs.

The 10 tests were really challenging, all with big bunkers!

This video is of the water test, a single blind, however, what you don’t see is that before you are sent, there’s a mark thrown into the middle of the lake, which is then hauled in back in by the thrower!
