🌳❗️ Acorn poisoning ❗️🌳

We’ve been receiving more reports of acorn poisoning in livestock this year, including a case in two sheep last week.

Unfortunately both sheep had to be euthanised due to the effects of the poisoning, and a post-mortem revealed that the abomasum (true stomach) was severely ulcerated as you can see in this image.

The farmer of these sheep has kindly allowed us to share this image as a warning of the devastating but often unseen effects of acorn poisoning.

Please continue to be vigilant against acorn poisoning and keep your livestock away from oak trees. If you suspect acorn poisoning in your livestock, call us for advice immediately on 01564 783404.

❗️🌳 Acorn warning! 🌳❗️

Following a case of acorn poisoning over the weekend, we wanted to share a reminder of the risks posed by acorns around this time of year - particularly while we are seeing these false autumn conditions! 🍂

Acorns are poisonous to cattle and sheep as they contain Gallic Acid and Tannic Acid, which are both toxic substances that can cause damage to the liver and kidneys, including internal bleeding.

Signs of acorn poisoning in livestock include vomiting and diarrhoea, depression, abdominal tenderness, weight loss, loss of appetite and dehydration.

Acorn poisoning can often be fatal so prevention is key. The dry weather conditions we’ve had over summer may make the acorns carry larger amounts of toxins than usual due to the stress the dry weather has put on the trees. Livestock are most likely to eat acorns when food is scarce, as it may be in some areas following the dry summer, so if you can’t avoid grazing in fields with oak trees during autumn then ensure other food sources don’t run short.

📞 If you suspect your animal is suffering from acorn poisoning, call us immediately on 01564 783404.

⚠️ Sweet Itch Prevention! ⚠️

Is your horse or pony suffering from sweet itch? Or will he or she develop it later on in spring and summer?
At 608 we have been successfully using for the past 9 years, a preventative treatment for sweet itch that helps in reducing the itchy/hypersensitive symptoms.
Based on our experience, this treatment has proven to be very successful in eliminating or vastly improving the undesirable symptoms of sweet itch.
The vaccine is called Insol, originally a ringworm vaccination licensed in Europe, that has the beneficial side effect of reducing the allergic signs associated to sweet itch.
The protocol is for 2 injections 2 weeks apart and will work better when used before the "insect season" sets in, so now is the time to start it!
Also the effect is cumulative so you can expect better results year on year!

Call us now to book in and reserve your vaccines of for advice on 01564 783 404.

Poultry owners please be aware of new measures coming into force…

Housing measures to protect poultry and captive birds from avian influenza are coming into force across the UK at one minute past midnight (00:01) on 29 November 2021.

This means that, from this time, it will be a legal requirement for all bird keepers across the UK to keep their birds indoors, or where this is not practical, to take steps to separate them from wild birds.

Keeping your birds undercover away from wild birds is vital to minimise the risk of them becoming infected with avian influenza by wild birds. But housing alone is not the only solution – it remains essential that you follow strict biosecurity measures to reduce the risk of disease spreading to your birds. Vasectomy of a ram to produce a teaser can be a very useful management tool to synchronise your flock’s oestrous cycle.

Doing this will tighten up your lambing period and create an earlier season, which in turn reducing cost and achieves stronger lambs in the autumn.

The operation removes a part of the vessel that carries the semen. The tup becomes infertile but still produces testosterone as both testicles remain and so will bring the sheep into season and start them cycling.
