Prevention is better than cure and as we know with our own teeth, dental hygiene is very important!

With puppies and kittens, it is really useful to get them used to having their teeth brushed (daily if possible!) Please see the link below for a helpful step-by-step guide:

https://www.anident.uk/dental-care-at-home

If you're not able to brush and they really wont let you, there are a few other options to aid hygiene:

Dental Gel - one blob onto the gums, once a day.
Rinsing solution - sq**rt into the mouth
Dental wipes - put over your finger and rub the teeth
Water additive - mix into drinking water for antibacterial action

If you'd like to find out more information or to order any of these products please get in touch.

🌟PET OF THE MONTH🌟

BENTLEY 🐾

Still a puppy at heart, 14 year old Bentley was in with us recently as his owner became worried about a lump.

The lump on his back leg had started to grow rapidly and his Mum was conscious about getting it removed before it became too big and caused further problems.

Vet Paula removed the difficult mass and sent it off for testing. It was found to be a tumour called a sarcoma and it was a very good thing to have it removed! 🙌

Bentley's Mum now has the difficult job of keeping him calm so his leg can heal; he's desperate to bounce about and have fun again!

You take it easy Bentley! 💙

🌟PET OF THE MONTH🌟

Dappy 🎩

Dapper Dappy is only a year old and loves coming to see us here at the vets.

As a member of our Pet Health Club, we have seen Dappy monthly to weigh him, give him a check over and give him his flea and worm treatment.

He is always a little star and enjoys coming in for the social aspect. Now he is a bit older and his growing has slowed, he received a few months worth of his flea treatment to take him to his booster.

We find these appointments really good at getting young animals used to coming to the vets for a check, treats and fuss without there always being an injection or procedure.

Today Dappy had his nails done and came in confidently!

Nice one Dappy! 😍

Are you planning to introduce a new kitten? or have you got two cats that are struggling to get on?

Pheromone treatments such as Feliway are a great resource that is easy for owners to use at home. Plug ins or sprays mean nothing to administer to the cat but offer some relief from stress.

Something beautiful that we wanted to share with you all. ❤️💔
To celebrate Mab’s wonderful long life, his owner had a memory bear and cushion made locally using his jackets and blankets, and we were so impressed with the lovely results she showed us that we wanted to show you all as we hadn’t seen anything like it before. 🐶❤️

Day 4 - Housing

In the domestic setting, pet rabbits can live either indoors or outside. Either environment is suitable for your rabbits, as long as they have access to everything they need to stay happy and healthy.

A rabbits enclosure should be at least 3m x 2m by 1m high - a hutch is not enough! ..But you can incorporate one (if you have one already) to make it suitable for meeting your rabbits' needs. This might mean connecting two together, using the hutch as a bedroom within a larger space or using tubing to create tunnels to new areas.

If you would like more detailed information, please see the links below:

Day 3 - Behaviour

It is important that pet rabbits have the opportunity to carry out their normal natural behaviours - digging, jumping, hiding, eating and socialising.

The housing environment and enrichment we provide should stop rabbits getting bored and also improve our bond with them.

Please see the link below for some good ideas:
https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/enrichment-and-behaviour/

Did you know? You can train your rabbits to fetch, go back to their hutch, and respond to their name! It’s a great experience for both of you, providing enrichment for your buns and helping you grow closer.

A great way to train a new behaviour is via clicker training. A small click when your rabbit does what you want, followed by a treat helps them to learn that click means treat!

Day 2 - Health 🩺
Vaccinations are essential to protect your rabbits against the deadly diseases:
💉Myxomatosis
💉RVHD1
💉RVHD2

These diseases are spread by contact with an infected rabbit or blood sucking insects, or via contaminated objects. There are no effective treatments for these diseases, so prevention through vaccinations is essential. Your rabbits should receive annual jabs at their vets to protect them and other rabbits.

Neutering your rabbits 🐰🐰
Neutering is the act of removing reproductive organs. This is known as spaying for females and castrating for males.

FEMALES: 🩷
Neutering your rabbits avoids unwanted litters. Unfortunately, up to 80% of un-neutered female rabbits can develop cancer of the uterus by the age of 5. Neutering your female rabbit at an early age will stop these cancers from developing.

MALES: 💙
Un-neutered males can be aggressive to other rabbits. In comparison, neutered male rabbits can live happily with male and female rabbits. A neutered female and neutered male are usually the most successful pairing.

🌟PET OF THE MONTH🌟

Izzy 🎀

3 year old Izzy has had a rocky few months. Initially poorly in March, Izzy was found to have stage 2 kidney disease following extensive blood tests and ultrasound investigation.

Izzy's teeth were also playing her up but it was important we started treating her kidneys and stabilise her condition before she could have an anaesthetic for her dental treatment.

A month later Izzy came back for her dental and had quite a few teeth extracted due to peridontal disease.

I'm pleased to say Izzy's gums have healed up nicely and she is doing really well albeit still getting used to the renal food! 🍗

Travel sickness can affect dogs just like it can humans.
Up to 27% of dogs suffer with it and show symptoms such as anxiety, nausea, retching, salivation, restlessness.

Tips to making journeys less stressful:

*Introduce travelling in the car slowly, making short trips or just sat in the car with encouragement.
*Make traveling in the car a positive experience where possible with lots of encouragement.
*Keep windows just slightly open to allow a bit of fresh air.
*Keep the car at an ambient temperature.
*Careful driving at a steady speed avoiding sudden breaking.
*Allow for regular breaks on a long trip. Time for a short walk and drink.
*Avoid feeding you dog a couple of hours before the trip.

If your dog suffers with travel sickness there are remedies and medications available, please speak to one of our team who can advise you.
