Morning all!

Todays forecast looks lovely for my first day back at work after the hols 🙈

Is forecast to be about average 3 degrees today. But due to the high winds and freezing rain, it’s going to feel more like -5!!

For this reason I will be keeping the group walk short today, coats will be needed. For the smaller ones I will do home visits, so the have opportunity to toilet but aren’t exposed to the elements for too long.

I’ve attached a guide for how cold is too cold. My advice is play it safe. A short walk followed my some play or mental stimulation at home will be all they need today!

Happy New Year to you all! I hope you’ve had a lovely Christmas. Thank you for your continued support, it is very much a...

🚫TOXIC CHRISTMAS FOODS FOR DOGS 🚫

🍫 CHOCOLATE 🍫
The most common clinical signs of ingesting chocolate are vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, panting or restlessness, excessive urination, and racing heart rate. In severe cases, symptoms can include muscle tremors, seizures, and heart failure.

🦴 COOKED BONES 🦴
Be wary of feeding them cooked turkey, goose and chicken bones as they can easily splinter, causing an obstruction and possibly even piercing your dog’s tummy

🥧 CHRISTMAS CAKE, MINCE PIES & CHRISTMAS PUDDING 🥧
All contain dried fruits such as raisins, currants or sultanas which are toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure.

🌰 MACADAMIA NUTS 🌰
Even a small amount ingested can lead to vomiting, hyperthermia and muscle weakness

🧀 BLUE CHEESE 🧀 can cause vomiting, high temperatures, diarrhoea and even seizures.

🧄🧅 ONIONS, LEEKS, GARLIC, CHIVES & SHALLOTS 🧅🧄
Can cause anaemia, look out for signs of lethargy, weakness, pale gums, fainting, reddish urine and decreased appetite.

🍾 ALCOHOL 🍾
Can cause lethargy, respiratory depression, and dangerously low body temperature in dogs.

REMEMBER your Christmas dinner involves a large amount of dangerous foods for your dog, either through being toxic, too salty or too fatty, so please be safe when trying to include your dog on Christmas Day.

If you think your dog may have eaten something that they shouldn’t or they have symptoms including sickness and diarrhoea, speak to your vet straight away.

🐶CHRISTMAS DINNER AND DOGS 🐶

When you’re sitting down for your Christmas meal it’s nice to be able to share some with your dog, but is this ok and if not is there a way to do it safely?

Quite a lot of food traditionally served up at Christmas is toxic to dogs, too fatty or too salty for them. The last thing you want is for a treat to cause them to feel unwell, or even worse result in a trip to the vets.

Here’s a list of things to avoid
• Chocolate
• Christmas cake, pudding & mince pies
• Sage & Onion Stuffing (Onions, leeks, garlic, shallots & chives)
• Macadamia Nuts
• Blue Cheese
• Cooked bones (especially chicken & turkey)
• Alcohol

If you think that your dog may have eaten, touched or inhaled something that it shouldn’t have, speak to your vet straight away.

Never try to make your dog sick. Trying to do this can cause other complications, which may harm your dog.

❗️RAWHIDE❗️

POSSIBLY THE MOST DANGEROUS DOG TREAT ON THE PLANET!

The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white “pure” look and remove the rancid smell. Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes.

On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde.
If that wasn`t bad enough they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Leave them in the shop or if some well meaning person buys them for your dog put them safely away and then dispose in the bin!

When considering walking your dog in cold weather, there’s a pretty simple rule to live by – if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your dog.

But like humans, every dog is different. Where some dogs seem to be made for snow and wet weather, others can struggle in even the slightest of chills. The vet experts at Joii have given some guidelines to help you decide if you should brave the elements or stay in the warmth.

Just looking at the temperature on the thermometer (or if you’re like us, on your phone’s weather app) isn’t enough, you also need to take into account wind chill, wet conditions (rain or damp ground) and how sunny the day is. If in doubt, keep your walk short or skip it all together if your dog can toilet in the garden instead.
