The New Forest Pony is a recognised British Isles breed with a unique history shaped by centuries of outside influences. Horses have lived in the New Forest in Hampshire since before the last Ice Age, but the first recorded mention dates back to 1016, when locals were granted rights to graze animals in what was then a royal hunting ground.
To improve the breed, various bloodlines were introduced over the years, including Welsh, Thoroughbred, Arab, Hackney, and later Fell, Dales, Highlands, Dartmoor, and Exmoor. This diverse ancestry contributed to the pony’s renowned hardiness, strength, and versatility.
Ponies born and sired on the open New Forest are called “Forest Bred.” These foals, sired by Approved Registered Stallions, are often sold at Beaulieu Road sales, with many becoming exceptional performers.
Today, New Forest Ponies roam freely on 37,500 hectares of common land, reflecting their independence and resilience. Known for excelling in riding, harness work, and horse shows, they remain a cherished and adaptable breed with a rich heritage.
