The combined areas of Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland boast a diverse mix of habitats that are home to some of our most iconic and much-loved species. But look closer. Our wildlife is in crisis, with England ranked as one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world.
We need a plan.
NaturePlan is the South of Tyne and Wear Local Nature Recovery Strategy: one of a new, England-wide system of regional strategies for nature established under the Environment Act 2021. Together, we plan to restore and reconnect nature, combat climate change, and benefit our communities.
Act now for our nature at www.natureplan.org.uk. Fill in our questionnaire and map nature’s recovery.
And let’s create a local nature recovery network where our people, plants and animals can live and thrive together.

A reminder please that only food sold by us can be consumed in the cafe or at our seating area outside.

It doesn't matter if you've bought a drink or the people you are with have bought something.

Please don't be offended when you are asked to put your food away or move away from the cafe if you are not purchasing anything from us.

Unfortunately providing a picnic area for groups of people doesn't pay the bills or staff wages.

Thank you for your understanding.

V - Vigilance - when it comes to melanoma, early detection is the key!

It is so important to regularly check our bodies thoroughly from our scalps to the tips of our toes, even in the areas the sun doesn’t shine.

Melanoma probably won’t come and tap you on the shoulder to let you know it’s there.

Therefore, it’s important that we are vigilant and get into the habit of checking our bodies and have someone who can also monitor those place we can’t see i.e backs and scalp.

The Beauty, health and wellbeing industry are in a prime position for this, and is the reason we are working with them by providing our training. https://training.melanoma-me.org.uk/

What to look for: unfortunately there isn’t that one image out there that we can look at to compare. We can use the ABCDE model as a guide;

A- Asymmetry - a normal mole should be symmetrical

B - Borders - a normal mole should have clear defined borders

C- Colour- A normal mole should have one colour

D- Diameter - a normal mole should be below 6mm

E- Evolution - a melanoma will more than likely change.

We can have something on our skin that ticks all of the boxes of the ABCDE rule and turn out not to be melanoma.

We also know melanoma can quash the ABCDE rule and be symmetrical, have clear defined borders, have one colour and be less than 6mm.

The most important component of the ABCDE model is E for evolution... cancer will almost always change, evolve or grow in some way.

We also added G, F and S as these are equally as important to look out for. G growing, F firm and S for sensation - itch, sore, tingling.

Finally U for Ugly duckling. If you have a mole that just looks different to the others, stands out or is niggling at your gut, get it checked!

Follow your instinct and if something doesn’t seem right or someone flags something up on you, please get it checked.

You’re not wasting the GP or the dermatologists time but by doing so could save your life!

Please show lots of love and support to Stevens family who are sharing his heartbreaking story for awareness.

Our youngest son Steven was diagnosed with stage 4 BRAC melanoma skin cancer in December 2021, he underwent extensive surgery January 24th at Durham University hospital, after a week in hospital he was discharged where Freeman Hospital took over his chemotherapy, Steven chose tablet form, he was doing amazing, eating, sleeping, cycling, generally just being himself, June 10th 2022 he took really poorly and was admitted to South Tyneside Hospital, sadly the cancer had decided to be very naughty and had spread to his brain 😭 Steven passed away peacefully 10 days later on June 20th with myself and his brother Lee by his side, it’s not “ Just skin cancer” it kills, it ruins families, it’s nasty, forever 35 Steven 💙🦋

X - Existential crisis
We’ve all seen the advert on TV, when the specialist delivers the scariest news anyone could ever expect to receive- “You (or your loved one) has cancer.” On the advert the room goes hazy, the chair moves backwards in the room and there is no sound coming from the consultants mouth (although he is clearly talking).

That is a pretty accurate depiction of how it is for most cancer patients when receiving the diagnosis everyone dreads. Then comes the aftermath, when everything is broken up into tiny chunks and examinations take place. It is so important that you listen, but your head is spinning and you’re just not taking anything in.

What about prior to this, when entering the hospital for the last time as a ‘free’ person? Because moving forward into the future, this venture will always retraumatise you and take you back to that fearful place. As a lovely friend of mine described her visit to the hospital that evening to get her diagnosis;

” I remember the day ever so clearly, I was on Duty all day and got cover from 3pm to attend apt at St Helens at 4:30, came home picked Ste up, I drove to Hospital as needed to keep my mind busy, playing James La Petit Mort loudly.. Parked up at the hospital and sat looking at hospital, I told Ste if we stay here and don’t go in, we will stay on this side of it, he s**t himself I think he thought I was gonna drive off!”

This statement was particularly poignant for me as I recalled my own appointment at the hospital, somewhat bemused and inappropriately confident that it was unlikely to be cancer and even if it was, its only skin cancer… Right?

Had we went with our instincts and ran as Anthea describes so vividly, then we wouldn’t have to step on this rickety old roller-coaster that would throw us about and even tip our world upside down.

Of course that wasn’t an option and we boarded them creaky wooden steps preparing ourselves for the craziest journey of our lives. But who wants to get on this precarious ride alone?

This is where counselling and support comes into play and why Melanoma-Me provides such a unique service. Imagine cowering in the corner after experiencing some heavy blows and knowing that you have to fight, but you just have no fight in you. You are tending to your wounds and having some of the most existential moments.

You came into this world on your own and now you have to fight this battle without any army. Your loved ones are going through their own journey, so you make a conscious effort not to burden them with your process and likewise they’re feeling the same.

Counselling is the hand that pulls you up and the voice that explains to you ” I wont change your physical experience, but I will meet you exactly where you are and I will walk with you.”

Sometimes this little bit of extra can be an absolute lifeline.

Then comes the summer, the fear of the once beloved sun… and the grief over the relationship you once had with it and the life you used to live.

The crippling anxiety, the worry that every mole is a threat, the constant checking of lymph nodes and the waiting…results, appointments, scans, biopsies and sometimes just the waiting.

Scan day comes along and then the results come, many people live from scan to scan with very much short lived relief between.

We have worked with hundreds of people over the last 6 years and have held people through their darkest moments, as well as diagnosis and living with melanoma and all it brings, we have supported people through the loss of their loved ones.

We have seen friendships flourish, through groups and events and we have seen loneliness reduced diminished.

We have spaces for people wishing to access counselling, either face to face or over the telephone – no waiting lists!

Please be aware of SKIN cancer.
This Charity Melanoma-Me Foundation oa ME, is an important Charity that you should read their advice. Melanoma Cancer is at its highest levels ever. Please check your bodies. You need to take responsibility for your health, skin and remember sun screen even in the winter. X

We have a big favour to ask of you all...

As we are coming towards the end of Melanoma May, we want to create a massive push for awareness with absolutely everyone. We would love it if anyone in our community would change their profile picture, even temporarily, to the Melanoma-Me logo to get awareness of melanoma spread to everyone

This helps us to not only raise awareness of Melanoma-Me and get our name out to places it isn't, but also of melanoma and the effect it can have on people's lives

Getting this information out there and the stories of people in our community can massively change the landscape of melanoma and what people know about it. If we can help just one person to become more aware then we would consider this a success

Thank you all so much 🦋xx
