Not just a request, it's the law!

It is a legal requirement to keep dogs on a short lead on Open Access land between 1 March and 31 July, even if there are no grazing animals on the land.

Dog walkers who flout this can face a £1,000 fine.

The reason? Baby animals.

In the summer months, dozens of bird species take to nesting on the ground to lay their eggs and raise their brood.

An out of control dog risks disturbing these nests, causing birds to abandon their eggs and their young.

Ignorance is not a reasonable excuse.

When the ponies are telling you, you really should listen.

With plenty of grazers and groundnesting birds out in the landscape, keeping dogs on the lead when you see a sign isn't just a request, it's a must.

With the peak season for badger road traffic collisions upon us, it is the start of a busy time for local badger groups. You can help by reporting any badgers you see on the road to them or Badger Trust.
If it's safe to do so, check if the badger might be alive, & if it needs help, please immediately call your local group, nearest rescue service or RSPCA.
