👉 This class is suitable for fully vaccinated puppies from 12 weeks up to 6 months when the course starts.

All training methods use positive reinforcement training with a qualified instructor accomplished and accredited in using these techniques.

There are several things that can be done to reduce risks of injury as well as keep our gundogs in great condition, which in turn may help to extend their working life.

Cool down
Cooling down is just as important as warming up. If your dog has been working at speed, try to make sure they don’t suddenly stop moving. Instead, walk for around ten minutes or so when you have finished.

If you’re out shooting for the day and there’s a lot of stop-start action, try to consider how you can maintain gentle movement in between drives, so they don’t stiffen up.

You might want to invest in some drying coats as keeping them dry and warm while resting between sessions, and at the end of a day, will also help to protect your dog’s musculoskeletal structure.

As for stretching, it is also always worth engaging the services of your local veterinary physiotherapist who can show you some appropriate exercises that you can do with your dog as part of a cool down routine.

This course will guide you through all the puppy fundamentals as well as looking at all the questions and guidance for owners.
Biting, jumping up, toilet training, and chewing are all common questions I get asked how to manage and will cover during the course.

The best way to cement your hunting, pointing and retriever training before going on an actual shoot day is to practice everything you’ve learned on live and freshly shot game.

We've added two extra group shoot over days in October and November to make sure those of you with young or inexperienced dogs can come along when there will be plenty to retrieve and lots of easy finds / flushes when hunting.

These live game training days are run as mini-shoot days. The format is based on rough shooting, walk-up, and beating. You will experience testing your dog’s ability and control in a more relaxed environment than on a formal shoot or competition. The day will challenge both the handler's and the dog’s hunting ability, control and all general field skills.

HPR's will experience the full pattern of hunting, pointing and flushing followed by retrieving.

Flushing dogs will experience hunting and flushing followed by retrieving.

Those with retrievers interested in picking up will experience a day working behind the hunt and Guns retrieving. Retrievers can also work in the beating line.

Breakfast, elevenses and a late lunch is included.

Handlers may also keep any game shot and assistance will be given on request as to how to handle and prepare the game for the table.

All dogs must have been exposed to shot before attending.

Very proud to have completed this qualification and assessment process with the Gundog Trainers Academy and The Animal Behaviour and Training Council

In July 2020, the GTA Teachers Course and its full assessment process was awarded accreditation by the ABTC (Animal Behaviour Training Council) having met the industry agreed criteria for welfare and ethics, teaching and training dogs and people, professional conduct, and underpinning knowledge.

As such, we are very proud to be the only gundog training organisation in the country to be accredited by the ABTC.

Our courses command a high standard of theoretical and practical training for instructors while also providing a friendly, supportive and safe community for gundog handlers and enthusiasts.

We offer comprehensive educational courses for:
• Gundog handlers and enthusiasts
• Dog trainers wishing to teach gundog handlers
• Gundog trainers and professionals wishing to ‘crossover’ to positive reinforcement training
• Gundog trainers looking to gain accreditation with a respected body

We aim to build an extensive network of likeminded, appropriately qualified trainers to fulfil the demand for ethical gundog training for shooting, competition and pleasure.
