A good friend of mine bought Poppy to me on behalf of his partner's grandmother who sadly passed away recently and we are getting Poppy ready to attend her funeral.
Poppy did incredibly well considering we weren't sure if she had ever been professionally groomed before.

Desensitising your dog to having their feet touched is such an important part of their welfare, not only does it mean grooming and nail clipping will be much less stressful but it also makes it much easier if you ever need to check your dogs feet for anything!
If your dog is sensitive due to an injury, trauma or something similar then that is completely understandable, you can slowly start to rebuild their trust with having their feet touched in a similar way with very gentle, smal gestures like this with tons of treats and positive reinforcement.
If your dog is simply sensitive because they aren't used to it that is so easily remedied and your dog groomer will thank you 😂

This is how I would brush out mild matting on my dog at home!
First things first you want to saturate the area in a decent dematting spray, I'm using the Artero Matt-X spray, then working it into the matted areas with my fingers
🌟 You are going to need a decent slicker brush, I particularly like the nala double headed slicker from Artero as the protected bristles on one side are super gentle on the skin! We are then going to line brush, not brush over just the top layer of coat as this is how owners can be brushing their dogs every day but the dog is still matted and requires a clip off as the top coat looks all fluffy and brushed out but underneath the dog is matted tight to the skin, so like brushing is the most efficient way to prevent this!
🌟 Next you want a metal comb and it's important to hold it correctly so again we aren't combing over the top thinking it's going through, hold the teeth perpendicular to the skin and comb through to identify any knots. DON'T try and pull the knots out with the comb, we go back in with our slicker and gently work the knots out.
On this particular dog it took me 10 minutes to brush the one leg out, it she had matting like this on all of her legs I would have clipped her off short to start again from a humanity over vanity stand point as it would have taken me 40 minutes of constant dematting just to brush her legs out and that isn't fair on the dog, plus it can damage the coat and make it quicker to matt in the future!

GRASS SEEDS! We all know to check in between the toes but they can literally penetrate the skin anywhere, particularly in folds such as the armpits, up in the groin, behind/in the ears, the base of the tail so it's incredibly important to check your dog everywhere.
As we all know, grass seeds can be potentially life threatening, if left they can burrow their way into the skin making their way into the blood stream and potentially vital organs.

The dry shake off can sometimes be a sign that your dog is trying to regulate their nervous system and calm down from a stressful, anxious or overexcited state. Of course we all know that dogs will shake off when they are wet but if you see a dog do a dry shake it's worth looking at the factors that could be contributing to any stress, anxiety etc. It's also worth noting that a lot of dogs will often do a shake off to release their muscles after a nap or long walk, so keep that in mind too! There are even some psychologists that recommend we as humans learn from our beloved pups and give it a try ourselves as it really can help to reset your nervous system and calm anxious and overwhelmed feelings!

FUN FACT: HAIR GROWS BACK.
Couldn't resist having a bit of fun with this 😂 Hopefully everyone has a sense of humour! As we all know when a dog is severely matted the only thing I can do as a groomer is clip the dog off short (the blade has to get under the matting it can't clip through it) and start again! As much as this might upset some owners it's very easy to prevent. Regular brushing and combing will prevent matting to the point where the dog has to be shaved (slicker brush and metal comb always!)
If I am able to brush out a dog I will always do my best but humanity over vanity always, I will only dematt for 15 minutes in accordance to animal welfare laws. Besides anything else why would you want me tugging at knots on your dog for that long??
Quick dog groomer body language tip! Not every dog that rolls on their back is asking for a belly rub!
You might notice a lot of dogs immediately roll onto their backs when you approach them and sometimes, yes, they are absolutely looking for all of the belly rubs! But it's important to read other body language cues to know if they are comfortable with you approaching, let alone reaching over them into their personal space!
Other cues to look for are and aren't limited to persistent lip licking, whale eye, ears tight back, shaking and so on.

Drumroll please!
There is no secret, you can't guarantee that every single puppy will fall asleep during their groom! What you can control is your environment and the energy you give off to the puppy! If your environment is calm and you are calm they are more likely to relax and eventually become sleepy, potentially leading to a mid-groom nap!
We can't expect every single dog to react the same to grooming but as long as we maintain a calm and relaxing environment that's the best we can do! If that leads to puppy naps then happy days! 🥰

When it comes to senior dogs I am all about humanity over vanity! If it means a dog leaves my salon looking slightly less than perfect but I know they are as comfortable as they can be during and after the groom that's what matters the most to me!
