Meet gorgeous Banjo ๐Ÿฅฐ
Heโ€™s a little anxious when meeting new people, so preparation was key before our first meeting.
Your dog is more to me than just their physical issues, so learning about Banjoโ€™s personality from his lovely guardian, Jenny, beforehand ensures that we create the most positive, relaxed, and trusting environment for him, and for optimal success in every way for all of us.

He's done so well during his first 2 sessions ๐Ÿ˜Š This adorable boy prefers alternating between 10 mins of treatment, and getting up to give me kisses ๐Ÿฅฐ or seeks a hug from Jenny, then settles again for a bit more massage. Although he might not settle quickly or relax for too long, thatโ€™s fine with me, as on his own terms, heโ€™s still getting the treatment he needs.

If youโ€™re concerned that your dog might not relax or settle quickly, please donโ€™t worry. I'll always ensure your dog feels comfortable and at ease with me and their treatment, by giving them the time and space they need ๐Ÿ˜Š

Lovely to see this handsome boy again for his monthly maintenance session ๐Ÿฅฐ
What an interesting journey Alan has had...from being bred for the racing track, to the love & security of his forever home ๐Ÿฉท with his human Pete, the bliss of a comfy sofa and bed ๐Ÿ˜Š and a lucky boy to have regular massage sessions to keep his body in tip top shape ๐Ÿ™Œ for all those zoomies around the field ๐Ÿ˜€

As Alan is in such good health, heโ€™s now helping to save the lives of other dogs ๐Ÿ˜ CONGRATULATIONS Alan on donating blood for the 5th time๐Ÿคฉ And yes he got some extra treats for achieving this milestone! ๐Ÿ˜‹

First visit with this beautyโ€ฆ. Ms Bear ๐Ÿ˜
It was an empathetic session as we are both suffering from strained and painful neck muscles ๐Ÿซค

Initially, Ms. Bear ( I've renamed her Princess Bear ๐Ÿฅฐ) preferred to stand and remain alert, reluctant to relax. But I believe we can safely now say she liked me and did let go!...choosing this less than regal position ๐Ÿ˜
I feel honoured to have earned her trust and seal of approval.
Looking forward to seeing Ms Bear again this week ๐Ÿ˜Š

WALKING MY TALK
Ouch! Yesterday I slipped in the mud and jarred my neck, and now itโ€™s painful turning my head. ๐Ÿ™„
Fortunately I know the power of massage ๐Ÿ’ช...the fast track way to get the movement back in my neck asap. A full body massage treatment every 4 weeks is my non-negotiable self-care ritual ๐Ÿ˜Š It's amazing how much better I feel afterwards. Besides, keeping my body flexible is essential when you spend your days on the floor massaging dogs ๐Ÿฅฐ

New Year Wellness Tip 12 โ€“ SWITCHING OFF

This is the best photo I could capture of Hector...he was distracted by food ๐Ÿ˜…
Hector wont hang around when a smart phone is near him. Many dogs are sensitive to all sorts of electronic devices and their electromagnetic fields. Some can be afraid of the strange notification sounds.
๐Ÿง ๏ธCheck that your dogโ€™s bed and sleeping areas are not close to electronic devices and wifi hubs etc.

๐Ÿฅฐ Hector is my reminder that before I enter you & your dogโ€™s home my phone is set to airplane mode & all antennas (Bluetooth etc) are switched off to block transmitting signals.
Creating the most relaxing environment is so important. Hector relaxes better and enjoys his massage & listening to classical music instead ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿ˜” We're all guilty of spending long periods of time glued to our phones, and we all find it hard to switch off our minds too. You and your dog will truly be rewarded by enjoying some precious bonding time without distractions, for just 5 โ€“ 10 mins of mindfulness whenever you can.

**Small changes making a big difference **

๐Ÿฉท Switch off your phone
๐Ÿฉท Invite your dog to join you
๐Ÿฉท Take a few deep breaths
๐Ÿฉท Relax together & slowly stroke your dog
๐Ÿฉท If you find your mind wandering try focussing on every stroke and how their coat feels
๐Ÿฉท Enjoy the love ๐Ÿฉท

New Year Wellness Tip 11 - WARM UP and COOL DOWN

Dogs are amazing athletes, so warming up prior to exercise is so important, and more so if theyโ€™re involved in fast, high intensity sports like Agility or Flyball, as the risk of injury is greater. Cooling down afterwards is key to a speedy recovery too.

๐Ÿ”ฅWarming up increases a dogโ€™s body temperature, their soft tissues are warmer and can stretch further and:
โœ…๏ธ reduce the risk of stiffness and injuries to their muscles, tendons, ligaments & joints
โœ…๏ธ mentally prepares both you & your dog for exercise
โœ… ๏ธhelps your dog perform at their best

๐Ÿพ 15 mins brisk walking immediately before strenuous activity, then some free running (no ball throwing) to stretch their muscles. Add some sit-to-stands and lie-to-stands.

โ„๏ธ Cooling down:
โœ…๏ธ helps your dogโ€™s heart rate return to its resting rate
โœ…๏ธ mentally important too - allows them to calm down and unwind
๐Ÿพ After activity try 5-10 minutes loose lead walking and stretching or gentle off lead exercise but no ball throwing of course.

**Small changes making big differences**

๐Ÿ˜ Maisie & Kezia...look at these girls go! I met Kezia at an Agility show, after she incurred a painful strain to her Gracilis muscle, and a very common injury we see in sporting dogs as a result of an overstretched cold muscle.
Denise now adds warm up & cool down exercises and alongside massage which reduce the risk of injury occurring in the first place, this keeps her girls doing what they love the most. Although Kezia is now 11 years young, she still loves getting round the course!

New Year Wellness Tip 10 โ€“ Weight & Nutrition

Maintaining our dogs at the correct weight can be a challenge when thereโ€™s been huge growth in new dog foods and treats, more eating places allowing dogs & even dog menus.

Weight loss begins and ends at the food bowl.
Excess body weight is linked to many health problems and a decrease in their quality of life.

From a musculoskeletal perspective, extra weight puts pressure on your dogโ€™s joints & increases the risk of:
๐Ÿ˜” general injuries
๐Ÿ˜” osteoarthritis
๐Ÿ˜” faster degeneration of all joint conditions
๐Ÿ˜” torn knee ligaments
๐Ÿ˜” diseased spinal discs
๐Ÿ˜” back problems and slipped discs

๐Ÿพ At nearly 12, Cleo is amazing and still walks miles every day despite her little legs!

Turn the volume up...youโ€™re gonna love that crunching ๐Ÿ˜
๐Ÿฅ•๐ŸŽ Trisha attributes Cleo's great health to a nutritious diet of raw meat, oily fish, veggies and fruit, and regular massage therapy. Maintenance sessions every couple of months ease some muscular tensions stemming from a past toe ligament injury.
If I didnโ€™t know her age, judging by her muscle tone and condition, I'd estimate Cleo to be half her actual age! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

๐Ÿค” If youโ€™ve questions about raw food & natural treats, we're lucky to have a couple of great small local businesses with a wealth of nutritional knowledge and based in the areas I cover for my clients.

New Year Wellness Tip 9 โ€“ Car Trips

Dogs just love to jump! But we know how challenging it can be to stop them sometimes.
Supporting your dog in & out of the car can make a big difference, and essential if your dog is older, has mobility issues or any joint or spinal conditions.

๐Ÿ• Lift your dog in & out if theyโ€™re small & not heavy, but ensure youโ€™re not likely to injure yourself in the process.
๏ธ๐Ÿ• Give bigger dogs a boost up their rear end.
๐Ÿ• Use a ramp or steps.

As noted in a previous wellness tip itโ€™s repetition of the most insignificant daily doggie activities like jumping in & out of the car that commonly cause injuries.
๐Ÿ™ Knocking legs on the boot on the way in, landing impact on joints, misjudged jump & slipping badly, can cause muscle strains or overstretching leading to sprained or torn ligaments & tendons ๐Ÿ™

William has recently been diagnosed with Elbow Dysplasia so heavy impact landings on his joints can be painful. Luckily heโ€™s small enough for Anna to lift him in & out safely, and win-win as he loves a cuddle ๐Ÿฅฐ
Lucky for me too as William is the perfect gentleman & now enjoys his regular massage treatments which keep on top of the overcompensatory muscular tension in his fore limbs, shoulders, neck and back created by weakness in his elbows.

New Year Wellness Tip 8 โ€“ Choosing a Harness

A harness helps to distribute a dog's weight and reduces tension on their neck when they pull.

โœ…๏ธ Choosing an adjustable harness with a Y-shape front allows for greater freedom of shoulder movement and full range of movement for their front legs, so your dog can move naturally and comfortably.
โœ…๏ธ A harness should fit around the rib cage and allow full expansion of your dogโ€™s lungs whilst exercising.

โŒ๏ธ An ill-fitting harness or one that sits directly across the front of a dogโ€™s body restricts the range of movement in their shoulders, shortens their stride especially when theyโ€™re running, and over time will hinder their mobility and can cause injury and discomfort.

โญ๏ธ Small changes can make a big difference to our dogs โญ๏ธ

๐Ÿ˜ Lola & Ruby modelling their Y- shaped harnesses. These two playful lasses are my youngest clients at 2 years old. Ruby has mild luxating patella and Lola has suspected hypermobility. Well done to Shannon๐Ÿ‘ for starting these girls off from an early age with the best shaped harness and getting them introduced to massage, which means weโ€™ll always be on top of managing their conditions, and the muscular injuries they'll accrue as they play & grow up together as the best friends they are ๐Ÿ˜Š

New Year Wellness Tip 7 โ€“ Joint Supplements

If your dog is ageing, experiencing stiffness, mobility issues, or suffers from conditions like arthritis, hip or elbow dysplasia, a quality joint supplement is definitely worth trying.
Working dogs or active sporting dogs may also benefit.

Thereโ€™s a good range of supplements out there to research.
Key Ingredients:
โœณ๏ธ Collagen: supports cartilage repair and rebuild, enhancing joint flexibility
โœณ๏ธ Glucosamine: slows cartilage deterioration and improves joint lubrication
โœณ๏ธ Chondroitin Sulfate & Hyaluronic Acid (HA): aids joint lubrication and shock absorption
โœณ๏ธ Omega-3 Fatty Acids: anti-inflammatory properties
โœณ๏ธ MSM: anti-inflammatory and supports elasticity of tendons, ligaments, and muscles
โœณ๏ธ Green-Lipped Mussels (GLM): rich in minerals, Chondroitin Sulfate, and high levels of Omega-3s.

๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธ๏ธ Record when you begin a new supplement and note any improvements.
๐Ÿ”ธ May take several weeks to seeing some positive benefits.
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธ Not seeing results after a few months, consider switching to a different supplement or brand.

Many of my clients add a joint supplement to their dogโ€™s diet.

Gorgeous Roxie has arthritis and she sees me each month.
โœ…๏ธ Massage offers significant relief in managing this painful condition, and we found a monthly treatment maintains Roxie at an optimum level of comfort until her next massage session.

Recently Sussanah added a daily Collagen supplement to her diet. Weโ€™ve observed Roxie is moving better, her coat is softer, and I have felt improvements in her muscle tone and joint flexibility ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿฉท Roxie enjoys the supplement, eagerly awaiting her meals with the collagen sprinkled on top.
Look at her glossy coat!

New Year Wellness Tip 6 โ€“ DOGS JUMPING UP

The repetitive nature of the seemingly most insignificant daily activities like a dog jumping up & balancing on their back legs can easily cause painful & debilitating injuries.

โญ๏ธ Small changes can make a big difference to our dogs โญ๏ธ

Discouraging your dog from jumping up, especially if your dog is small, can be a challenge as not many of us are fans of bending down! Being aware of when you see it happening is a great start though ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Dogs are not naturally built to stand on their hind legs, so prolonged and repetitive standing on them causes overstretching and can result in soft tissue injuries:
๐Ÿ˜” muscle strains to their lower back and Gluteals
๐Ÿ˜” Hamstrings and other hind leg muscles become fatigued and sore
๐Ÿ˜” puts stress on knees & hip joints
๐Ÿ˜” overextension of hip and ankle (hock) joint

๐Ÿ• Happy chappy Rolo wants to be everyoneโ€™s buddy ๐Ÿฅฐ including his feline friend & like many dogs, he dances about on his hind legs as heโ€™s super excited, & adores affection.
Rolo is a healthy boy, loves physical touch so enjoys his monthly massage treatment, but was very guarded when touching his hind legs. His Hamstrings and his Extensor (lower leg) muscles were very sore & adhered. Now his family try to discourage him jumping up and massage sorts out his fatigued & strained leg muscles ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜ƒ

New Year Wellness Tip 5 โ€“ BEDDING

How many different and sometimes crazy positions does your dog lie in? ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Beds should offer plenty of space to lie flat & be large enough to stretch out their legs fully.
Plastic curved beds donโ€™t give much flexibility and over time can cause back and joint problems.

An orthopaedic or memory foam bed will provide extra support & comfort for older dogs with less muscle mass and those with stiffness, mobility issues, or joint conditions like arthritis.

Itโ€™s beneficial to place beds away from draughts and direct sources of heat, like radiators, and have a few different style beds around the house will give your dog choice.

If you imagine your dog is as big as Alan the Greyhound then their bed will always be spacious enough ๐Ÿ˜

Alan is an ex-racer but soon found out how comfy sofas and human beds are, and both are perfect for stretching out those long legs๐Ÿ˜Š

Regular monthly massages are perfect for keeping Alan, in peak condition for long hikes with his human. Recently, Alan injured a joint in one of his toes ๐Ÿ˜”...even this one small joint has lead to imbalances throughout his body as muscles compensate for the discomfort. Massage is now providing relief by addressing the resulting muscular tension in his leg, neck, and back ๐Ÿ‘

New Year Wellness Tip 4 - RAISED FEEDER BOWLS

Raised bowls can reduce neck strain, improve posture and comfort especially for older dogs or those with mobility issues, back or joint conditions like arthritis & elbow dysplasia.

๐Ÿ‘€ Your dog should have their head down with a relaxed neck, but not reaching down. A general rule for the right height is to measure your dog from the floor to where their legs meet their body, and the bowl no taller than that.
Adjustable feeders are available or a budget option is experiment with what you have at home...for example try placing your dog's bowl inside a strong ceramic plant pot.

๐Ÿฅฐ When i met Charlie his neck & back were holding a lot of tension & at first, massage was uncomfortable for him. A couple of sessions of massage & his overall comfort has increased considerably & his back is stronger.
After raising his bowls & placing a non-slip mat to prevent his forelimbs sliding whilst feeding, his humans were so pleased to see that Charlie started drinking more often, which was an added & unexpected benefit ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Monitor your dog for any adverse changes in their health or behaviour after switching bowls. Have a large dog breed or a dog with spinal issues, consult your Vet if raised bowls are suitable.

New Year Wellness Tip 3 โ€“ JUMPING ON & OFF FURNITURE

Dogs pick up the majority of injuries doing normal daily activities, particularly repetitive ones like jumping on & off the sofa.

โœ… ๏ธDog steps and ramps or even a footstool offer a perfect solution to minimise your dogโ€™s chances of getting hurt.

Jarring impacts on landing, slipping & overstretched limbs puts excessive stress on their joints and can often result in strained muscles, torn ligaments & even slipped discs ๐Ÿ™

๐Ÿง A good guide for smaller dogs is to look at furniture higher than your dogโ€™s back.
Larger dogs may be as tall as a couch or bed, but their heavier weight puts a greater strain on their joints and back too.

โœ…๏ธ Your dog will also love a non-slip runner in front of the sofa to give them traction for take off, some extra cushioning on landing & reduce slipping injuries.

Jumping can aggravate any existing joint, neck, back, or leg conditions, so steps are great for dogs like Teazel who has Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). Regular monthly massages release muscular tension associated with the IVDD overcompensation issues along his spine.

Cleo & Teazel love their steps in their living rooms & bedrooms as it means they can safely enjoy snuggling with their humans ๐Ÿ˜

New Year Helpful Tip 2 โ€“ BALL THROWING

Repeatedly launching a ball causes your dog to make sharp twists, turns and brake suddenly. These put a lot of stress on your dog's joints, and over time can lead to arthritis ๐Ÿ˜”
The sudden braking is often responsible for shoulder injuries, and damage to the cruciate ligaments in their knees ๐Ÿ˜”

Bin the ball launcher as sadly the negative impacts outweigh the positive.

We donโ€™t want to take all their enjoyment away, so if your dog is obsessed with balls:
โœ…๏ธ warm up before ball games
โœ…๏ธ limit manual throws to just a few a day
โœ…๏ธ throw the ball to your dog rather than away from them
โœ…๏ธ avoid throwing downhill

If your dog is older, or has arthritis or cruciate ligament issues then roll the ball gently along the ground will keep the game rewarding for you both.

๐Ÿ• Barley loves chasing a ball. As a young healthy dog with no injuries or health conditions, John & Sue want to keep him this way, so to continue their enjoyment of playing ball games with Barley, they now throw the ball towards him, and book him for a maintenance massage every 3 months, to be on top of any minor muscular tensions or strains he may accrue from general daily fun doggie activities ๐Ÿ˜Š

After all the festive excesses, many of us think about changes weโ€™d like to make to our health & fitness, so why not include our dogs too ๐Ÿ• as we start the New Year ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Offering a Daily Wellness Boosting Tip thatโ€™s easy to action, & helping you support your dogโ€™s health and comfort. Plus how massage can also help you & your dog achieve this a little sooner.

New Year Helpful Tip 1 โ€“ NON-SLIP RUGS
Did you know that dogs walk on their toes and need to grip the ground with each step?
Slippery laminate & tile flooring are a challenge for all dogs.
Placing non-slip runners on laminate and tile flooring prevent your dog's feet sliding and reduce the risk of serious muscular injuries to their chest, shoulders, hips & knees.

You really canโ€™t have enough non-slip rugs! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Many are washable too ๐Ÿ‘

Your dog will love a runner in front of the sofa too, so their feet have traction when jumping up & down, & prevent injuries to their back.

Cocoโ€™s family were so pleased to see how she chooses to walk on the runners as soon as they put them down!
Coco is a little unstable on her hind legs...the rugs help to keep her upright more often so she can continue to enjoy playing with new bouncy pup Darcy ๐Ÿ˜Š

Betsy has a weak knee due to crucuiate ligament damage & her eyesight is not so great now, so she feels much safer on the non-slip runners.

Betsy & Coco have massage every 6 weeks & both are now living their senior years with less pain, longer walks & more joy for life ๐Ÿฉท
