Another horse I saw today was a 27yo who was struggling to keep on weight over the winter. Unfortunately I didn’t get any pics of inside its mouth but she had two very loose CT that had no gingival attachment that I pulled out with my fingers. One had a very old root fracture the fragment of the root remains in the socket. These have been loose a very long time and would have been causing much discomfort every time the horse chewed. This horse hadn’t had a dental for over 10 years and had large overgrowths and feed packing and was very sharp.

It’s been a busy day helping older horses and ponies today!

First we have a 24yo Welsh pony who has not seen a dentist ever we think.
This poor pony has recently been taken on by a client and came in an emaciated state. This pony only has 5 cheek teeth in each arcade instead of the usual 6. This is common in Welsh ponies and can lead to many dental problems. This pony was missing its lower 309 which is in the middle of the lower CT row. The opposing tooth had continually erupted overtime but as it wasn’t in contact with a tooth below became very overgrown and was just starting to pe*****te into the gap in the lower jaw. The last lower CT was also very overgrown and the opposing teeth had completely worn away.
The pony had only been able to eat on its right hand side and had lots of feed packing on that side. These abnormalities meant a diagonal bite had developed on its incisors.
This pony felt so happy after he just wanted to cuddle me it was so cute! 🩷

I’ve had some interesting cases recently so I thought I would share them with you.

This is a new client of mine whose mare has a severe wry nose. This is a congenital lateral deviation of the horses nose.
In this case there is an exaggerated lateral deviation and twist of the premaxilla, maxilla and mandible. The horse has previously had dental work done by an EDT using a normal speculum which understandably left the horse very sore and last time dislocated the horses TMJ.
I used ‘cow bars’ which sit further back in the horses mouth so that I could keep the TMJ as level as I could possibly get.
The mare had a steep diagonal bite of its incisors (DGL4) and a steep incisor table angle. I corrected the table angle and reduced the angle of the diagonal bite as much as I could without compromising her occlusion (tooth contact) to free up some lateral movement.
On the 1 + 4 arcade (horses right hand side) her cheek teeth (CT) had a flat table angle which was then reversed towards the front of the mouth. The CT on the 2 + 3 arcade (horses left hand side) was reversed at the back with a steep table angle towards the front of the mouth. There were large ramps on the 106 and 306.
I was able to reduce the ramps and correct the CT table angles which really freed up her lateral movement. She also had many diastema which were packing feed that I flushed.
As she used to be in a lot of pain in her tmj after having dental work we consulted with the vet present and put her on Bute for a couple of days. She was munching grass well by the afternoon and eating hay well the next day. She’s doing really well now with a more balanced mouth. And she will need regular dental visits to maintain it.
Unfortunately I didn’t manage to get any photos of the CT as I didn’t want to have her mouth open longer than absolutely necessary. But I will try and get some next visit now I know she was fine afterwards!

TB X-Racer I treated yesterday which unfortunately hasn’t had regular dental treatment. New owner has taken on this sweet mare who is in poor condition and unable to chew properly. You could see from the dark staining on its teeth that she wasn’t chewing effectively. Very large ‘hooks’ on the upper first cheek tooth and very large ‘ramps’ on the last lower cheek tooth. As well as a wavemouth with protuberant teeth. She was so good to treat 💗 With this mare on a mash in addition to her hay and grass to get her eating correctly she should look like a different horse in 6 months when I am back to further reduce those overgrowths.

This is a 30 year old Shetland who has never had dentistry performed before. Owner said she was struggling to keep weight on her.
She had very large overgrowths (hooks) on her first upper cheek teeth that pe*****ted into her lower mandible (jaw). She had a fractured tooth, loose teeth and lots of feed packing between teeth which is very painfulI. I was able to reduced the large overgrowths completely without compromising the nerves within the tooth. I extracted two loose teeth and referred to a specialist equine dental vet for a further 3 teeth to be extracted. She is now eating very well.

What a fantastic week in Ireland at the beautiful Millstreet International Horse Trials.
KEC Deakon was his usual superstar self WINNING his first CCI2* finishing on his super dressage of 26! We are so excited about this horses future. 😁
Ellie Guy's Fabian at just 8yrs old completed his first CIC3* in style finishing 20th in a huge class. He was a total machine to ride XC and came out brilliantly on the last day just having one pole down. Blenheim CIC3* for him next.
Artistiek was a legend as always finishing 9th individually in the CIC3* and we came home with team silver too! 🥈 I loved my first experience of being on a Nations Cup team, such a great bunch of people!
Top groom Siobhan Sharples has worked so hard all week, the horses looked amazing, thank you!! Dream team ready to go again 😄

Super happy with all of the horses' performances at Belton International Horse Trials 😁 KEC Deakon (video) continues to impress us with a 30 dressage and a very cool double clear in just his 2nd Intermediate which was a very tough track and an identical one to the 2*! Fabian did a great test of 28 in the CIC2* to lie 4th in a huge class and followed it up with just one silly rail in the showjumping and a great steady clear XC. Artistiek as well did a good test for 29 to lie 5th in the CIC2* and followed it up with a lovely clear showjumping, we decided to withdraw before the XC as the ground was very sticky. Very grateful to all of the organisers at Belton for running and putting on a very successful event! Busy couple of days but couldn't have done it without my amazing team, thank you Coriander Cousins for turning the horses out superbly! 👌

Some interesting cases from the end of last year 🐴
They show the importance of having regular dental checks from an early age right the way through to being elderly. Prevention is always better than cure, keeping a horses mouth well balanced throughout its life will keep that horse young most its life 😃
