Equine Cushing’s Disease, also known as PPID, is one of the most common disease syndromes recognised in horses and ponies in the UK.

This disease is a progressive condition that can negatively impact your horse’s quality of life. While early signs, such as subtle coat changes, may seem minor at first, the disease is likely to worsen over time, leading to more serious symptoms that could significantly affect your horse’s well-being.

If you are concerned about your horse please contact our team on 01749 830666.

With bonfire night around the corner it can be a scary time for both owners and horses. Here are some ways which you can help your horse:
• Check when are where local displays are happening
• If you know that fireworks will be set off near your horses yard, try to be with them to keep an eye on them
• Play a radio a little louder than normal to help drown out some of the noises
• Give them a treat ball or hide treats to keep them distracted
• If your horse is happy to, then bring them in for stabling. However, if a stable is a stressful environment for them under normal circumstances keep them out to avoid extra stress.
• Try to make their environment as safe and secure as possible. Remove anything sharp or slippery and make sure fences and gates are secure.

If you have any concerns about your horse during this period and would like some advice please contact one of our team on 01749 830 666.

Autumn is the time of year when sycamores drop their seeds. If these are ingested by your horse it can cause atypical myopathy, which can be fatal due to the seeds containing a toxin known as hypoglycin A.

To reduce the risk of exposure to sycamore seeds, fence off access to sycamore trees in your fields. You can also help by providing alternative forage such as hay or haylage off the floor in nets or feed racks and remove and seeds or saplings you see in their paddock.

Be safe and be seen 🔦

With the weather turning more autumnal and the daylight hours drawing in, it is important to make sure you are seen whilst hacking out. Make sure that you and your horse can be clearly seen from both the front and rear and wear hi-vis.

If your horse has been out 24/7 over summer, and they are going to be stabled more during the autumn and winter months, make sure to gradually transition them to coming inside so that they can adjust to this routine change.

You can do this by starting with short periods of stabling and gradually increasing the time they spend inside over a period of weeks.

If eaten acorns, leaves and branches from oak trees can be poisonous for horses. Acorns contain tannic acid, which when eaten in large quantities can cause serious illness. You can help your horse by avoiding using fields until acorns are raked away or by fencing off areas around oak trees.

The signs for acorn poisoning include:
• Lethargy
• Acorn husks in droppings
• Dehydration
• Reduced appetite
• Lying down more frequently
• Colic
• Mouth ulcers
• Diarrhoea containing blood
• Constipation

4 Cornerstones of Laminitis Management: Farrier

We always seek to work alongside your farrier to help manage your horse or pony’s feet. They will typically be on your yard with a much higher frequency, and are best placed to spot either an expanding waistline, increased digital pulses, or changes in the hoof such as divergent growth rings which might point towards an increasing risk of laminitis.

In most cases of laminitis, we recommend taking X-rays (radiographs) of the affected patients feet, in order to guide corrective trimming and farriery. Unfortunately once the pedal bone has rotated and become less firmly attached to the inside of the hoof wall, we cannot change or reverse this. However, we can use special horseshoes and pads to alleviate pain.
