⭐️Proud Vet Physio moment!⭐️

I’m so proud of my little patient, Aurora, and her owner for how much they have achieved!
Aurora has gone from having difficulty walking, due to subluxating patella syndrome, to being placed third in the Hounds Category and Best Puppy at her first show! This has allowed her to qualify to go to the championships!
This little dog has come on leaps and bounds with her physio sessions and the hard work and dedication of her owner. I can’t wait to see what they achieve next!

What’s the difference between a Veterinary Physiotherapist and a Chiropractor?

It was brought to my attention recently that not an awful lot of people know the difference between my profession as a Veterinary Physiotherapist and Chiropractors! As a pet owner I feel that it’s really important for you to know the difference so that you can make the informed decision of which practitioner would benefit your animal. As veterinary professionals we often work side by side to ensure our patients are receiving the treatment that will improve their chances and rate of recovery.

Here is a breakdown of the differences:

- Chiropractors mainly specialise in mechanical issues, skeletal adjustments and stretching.
- Chiropractors are mainly used when adjustments are needed for the skeletal system and only when these specific issues need to be rectified.
- Chiropractors can help realign a joint that if left unchecked could potentially cause arthritis.
- Veterinary Physiotherapists can target skeletal, muscular and neurological dysfunction and provide many different treatment options.
- Veterinary Physiotherapists use manual therapy techniques, electrotherapies (such as therapeutic laser and ultrasound) and remedial exercise to fully cater for your pets needs.
- Veterinary Physiotherapists are able to create a holistic treatment plan which are individually tailored for each patient and their needs.
- Veterinary Physiotherapists are not only for just post-operative rehab but also general maintenance, post diagnosis treatment and sporting maintenance.

No matter who you choose, you should always check for these things before you choose someone:

- What qualification do they have? The most common for Chiropractors is McTimoney and Veterinary Physiotherapists should have BScHons, MSc or IMSc degrees.
- Are they registered? Registry bodies for both professions are RAMP, NAVP, ACPAT and AHPR.
- Are they insured? It is vital for your practitioner to be insured to ensure the safety of you, your pet and your property.

If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

🐴Equine Welfare🐴
In light of the recent discussions upon equine welfare due to the exposure of practices that professionals within the equestrian industry have used, I would like to highlight my opinion as a veterinary physiotherapist on this matter.

As a veterinary physiotherapist, the welfare of my patients is of the upmost importance to me; as it should be for all professionals within the industry. It is the primary concern for me as a veterinary physiotherapist to provide my patients with treatments that will benefit them holistically and ensure that their welfare improves over the course of the treatments.

I believe that it is important at this time to ask professionals such as veterinarians or others veterinary professionals like myself, how we can improve the welfare of your horse together.

It can be a simple as providing an elderly horse with regular maintenance massage and laser to reduce pain symptoms and help to treat osteoarthritis, which is a common issue in elderly horses. Another example is if you have an competition horse you can improve their welfare by getting them treated regularly so that any issues that they experience can be treated to reduce the amount of pain that they experience during performance.

providing your horses with entertainment while stabled can also actually improve their welfare standards by helping them to have mental stimulation which they otherwise wouldn’t get a contained environment.

Please leave a comment if you would like to ask a question about how you could improve your horses as welfare, I would love to answer them for you.

🐶Patient Progress Update!🐶

I am so incredibly proud of the fantastic progress that little Milo has made! Milo has bilateral hip dysplasia and subluxating patella syndrome, which made him a very unhappy little boy.

His owner came to me in the hopes that we could help him to have a normal life that was relatively pain-free.

As you can see by the two photos (photo 1: before, photo 2: after), after only four treatments Milo has made leaps and bounds in progress in his posture and his temperament. He seems to be much more himself and is much more calm. He is now enjoying longer walks and is much happier in himself.

I cannot wait to see the progress that he continues to show throughout the time that I spend treating him.

If you have any questions, think that your horse or dog would benefit from a little TLC or might need veterinary physiotherapy please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Johnny is an absolute pleasure to treat! This gorgeous, talented old boy is such a softie during his physio sessions and absolutely loves his treatments. He often lets me know how much he loves his treatment by falling asleep afterwards, or even during! If you look at the last photo you can see him nodding off😴

I have been working with him alongside his super talented rider to ensure that he can perform at his best during the eventing season. I can’t wait to see how this dream team progresses!

If you have any questions, think that your horse or dog would benefit from a little TLC or might need veterinary physiotherapy please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

🐾🐶Client Testamonial🐶🐾

‘I can not rate the service I received from Honor Jeffery Veterinary Physiotherapy highly enough!
With me Honor was polite, friendly, kind, knowledgeable, helpful, happy to give advice, approachable and patient.
With Bramble, my Working Cocker-Spaniel, who had severe and complex muscular problems. Honor was thorough in her initial examination; she was patient and gentle in her massage treatment.
Bramble is now a different dog. Clearly free from pain and happy to run and play freely once again.
Honor gives great value for money and I would recommend her service to everyone!’ - Sarah (Bramble’s owner)

It’s been such a pleasure to see the progress that little Bramble has shown over the last few weeks! This cuddly little pup (as seen in picture 1 whilst enjoying Thermotherapy with my heat pad) has come on leaps and bounds since starting physio. I’m so proud of this little girl and her fantastic owner who has been so active with her rehabilitation.

She came to me when she was incredibly lame but is now better than ever (head over to on Instagram to see the before and after videos)! I cannot wait to see how far we can progress with this fantastic little dog in the future.

If you have any questions, think that your horse or dog would benefit from a little TLC or might need veterinary physiotherapy please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

How involved can you be as an owner?

What can you do to help? Well, lots of things!

You and I work together to help your animal recover as fast and and well as possible. I will try and get you as the client involved in your animal’s rehabilitation, prehabilitation or sporting program so that they can benefit from treatment even outside of our sessions.

Quite often I will prescribe remedial exercises and Effleurage (massage) to clients; this allows you to help me help your animal to progress and provide an effective treatment plan. Not only are you helping me but you are strengthening the bond between you and your animal during their healing journey.

Together we create a dream team to help your animal on the road to recovery or greatness!

If you have any questions, think that your horse or dog would benefit from a little TLC or might need veterinary physiotherapy please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

🐶🐴EXCITING NEWS!🐴🐶

I have just finished recording a podcast episode with ! We discussed being a new practitioner in the veterinary industry and the challenges that I face as a Veterinary Physiotherapist.

It was so lovely to chat about the industry and to be able to hopefully pass on some useful advice to other new practitioners or those thinking about getting into the industry.

I can’t wait to hear what you think about it when it airs! I am told that it will be aired in a couple of months time but I will keep you all updated!

⭐️NEW ELECTROTHERAPY!⭐️

Pulse Mag which is also known as Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMFT) is a fantastic piece of kit that I think is an absolute essential for Veterinary Physiotherapy.

PEMFT is not a cure, but it helps to improve or ‘up-regulate’ the body’s natural healing responses. By doing this it can improve the rate of bone fracture healing and nerve healing/regrowth. It can also cause vasodilation to improve blood flow or cause vasoconstriction to reduce inflammation.

It is also used as a form of pain relief by slowing nervous transduction and communication!

PEMFT does all of this on a cellular level. It works by interacting with cellular membranes and modulating ions binding to receptor sites. When the different settings of the PEMFT unit are applied it can cause different cellular responses which is how it can cause so many different reactions!

This is why PEMFT is so valuable to Veterinary Physiotherapists, it can really benefit patients when used alongside other treatment techniques and help to speed up the healing process.

🐶🐴What are you paying for?🐴🐶

I often feel ‘odd’ about charging people which is why I have to remind myself of why I charge the amount that I do!

So, what do you get for the money you pay?

It might seem like the cost is quite high but you are not just paying for the duration of your animals physio session. You are also paying for:

🐶A consultation, assessment and treatment
🐴Report writing - for you and your vet (if required)
🐶Designing a tailor made treatment plan and support through the plan
🐴 Four years of intense training and knowledge of a Masters in Veterinary Physiotherapy
🐶 Vet, saddler, tack fitter, trainer or dentist liaison (if required)
🐴 Travel to you

Not only are you paying for the session but all of these extras as well. Not only does it guarantee you all of these things but it can put your mind at rest knowing that your beloved pet is being treated by a fully qualified, registered and insured Veterinary Physiotherapist.

A massive thank you to Chloe Davies Captures for these fantastic photos! If you would like a very professional photoshoot with a super friendly photographer she’s fantastic!!

⚠️WARNING - GRAPHIC PHOTOS⚠️
These photos show really clearly where the facial nerves run throughout your horse’s head and how large they are.

Now imagine where your horse’s bridle sits in relation to these nerves! This is why it is so important to have correctly fitting tack. If your bridle is too tight it can impact these nerves and potentially damage them. This can lead to avoidant behaviour, or even paralysis of the nerve in the worst case scenario.

This can impact behaviours like head tossing and head shyness; if a nerve gets damaged or irritated it can cause a hot, burning, and painful sensation.

Please make sure to check if your bridle is correctly fitted to prevent these issues!

WEAKER HINDLIMB ≠ ASYMMETRICAL PELVIS

It can be more common than you think for horses to have a noticeably weaker hindlimb. And whilst this may mean that one side has less muscle than the other, the pelvis, sacrum and tail should remain straight. In essence, the muscles are asymmetrical but the skeletal system is straight.

In this case of a chronic sacroiliac pathology, the pelvis has become asymmetrical and the sacrum has rotated, alongside the tail carriage being drawn to the side even at stance.

Using FER Approach muscle releases alongside pelvic @ ribcage mobilisations, this helped to improve the symmetry of this horses pelvis and sacrum to improve function of the gluteals and allow for even hindlimb strengthening. You can still see the reduced muscle as to the right, and so this can now be corrected over time.

This photo is before and after of one treatment.
