🐱Meet Newt!🐱

This is Newt, he’s an elderly cat that absolutely loves my Pulse Mag (PEMFT)! He’s super affectionate and spent a lot of time just giving me nuzzles (as seen in picture 2). He’s such a pleasure to work with!

Elderly animals really benefit from maintenance sessions to ease the aches and pains that come with old age. If you have an older pet that you want to get checked over, please get in touch to book an appointment.

What are kissing spines?
Did you know that between 39-80% of horses have them!?

Overriding spinous processes, also called “kissing spines” occur when two or more boney projections at the top of the vertebrae touch or overlap. Different studies suggest different percentages of the equine population having them.

But, having them isn’t necessarily significant as many have them without clinical signs (according to certain research papers).
There are other contributing and confounding factors that lead to them being significant!

Join Dr Martina Neidhart and myself in an upcoming webinar where we will dive into the world of the causes of kissing spine.

Does your animal need Veterinary Physiotherapy?

Sometimes we don’t realise that our pets are in any sort of discomfort or pain. Our pets often don’t show obvious signs or symptoms due to their natural instincts; for example, when your dog is running around and wagging their tail it is easy to miss the signs that they aren’t feeling 100%. Dogs often won’t show that they are in pain until it gets to the level where they are non-weight baring. This is because if they were wild, their pack would most likely leave them behind.

This also applies to horses; Horses are prey animals which means they are hardwired to not show signs of weakness as this would signal to a predator that they are easier to kill. This makes it a lot harder to know if your horse is actually experiencing pain on a daily basis.

This is why it is recommended that you get your animal checked by a neuromusculoskeletal professional who is trained to recognise the signs and symptoms of chronic and acute pain.

If you would like to book your animal in for a check up please don’t hesitate to get in contact.

⭐️Proud Vet Physio moment!⭐️

I’m so proud of my little patient, Aurora, and her owner for how much they have achieved!
Aurora has gone from having difficulty walking, due to subluxating patella syndrome, to being placed third in the Hounds Category and Best Puppy at her first show! This has allowed her to qualify to go to the championships!
This little dog has come on leaps and bounds with her physio sessions and the hard work and dedication of her owner. I can’t wait to see what they achieve next!

What’s the difference between a Veterinary Physiotherapist and a Chiropractor?

It was brought to my attention recently that not an awful lot of people know the difference between my profession as a Veterinary Physiotherapist and Chiropractors! As a pet owner I feel that it’s really important for you to know the difference so that you can make the informed decision of which practitioner would benefit your animal. As veterinary professionals we often work side by side to ensure our patients are receiving the treatment that will improve their chances and rate of recovery.

Here is a breakdown of the differences:

- Chiropractors mainly specialise in mechanical issues, skeletal adjustments and stretching.
- Chiropractors are mainly used when adjustments are needed for the skeletal system and only when these specific issues need to be rectified.
- Chiropractors can help realign a joint that if left unchecked could potentially cause arthritis.
- Veterinary Physiotherapists can target skeletal, muscular and neurological dysfunction and provide many different treatment options.
- Veterinary Physiotherapists use manual therapy techniques, electrotherapies (such as therapeutic laser and ultrasound) and remedial exercise to fully cater for your pets needs.
- Veterinary Physiotherapists are able to create a holistic treatment plan which are individually tailored for each patient and their needs.
- Veterinary Physiotherapists are not only for just post-operative rehab but also general maintenance, post diagnosis treatment and sporting maintenance.

No matter who you choose, you should always check for these things before you choose someone:

- What qualification do they have? The most common for Chiropractors is McTimoney and Veterinary Physiotherapists should have BScHons, MSc or IMSc degrees.
- Are they registered? Registry bodies for both professions are RAMP, NAVP, ACPAT and AHPR.
- Are they insured? It is vital for your practitioner to be insured to ensure the safety of you, your pet and your property.

If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

🐴Equine Welfare🐴

In light of the recent discussions upon equine welfare due to the exposure of practices that professionals within the equestrian industry have used, I would like to highlight my opinion as a veterinary physiotherapist on this matter.

As a veterinary physiotherapist, the welfare of my patients is of the upmost importance to me; as it should be for all professionals within the industry. It is the primary concern for me as a veterinary physiotherapist to provide my patients with treatments that will benefit them holistically and ensure that their welfare improves over the course of the treatments.

I believe that it is important at this time to ask professionals such as veterinarians or others veterinary professionals like myself, how we can improve the welfare of your horse together.

It can be a simple as providing an elderly horse with regular maintenance massage and laser to reduce pain symptoms and help to treat osteoarthritis, which is a common issue in elderly horses. Another example is if you have an competition horse you can improve their welfare by getting them treated regularly so that any issues that they experience can be treated to reduce the amount of pain that they experience during performance.

providing your horses with entertainment while stabled can also actually improve their welfare standards by helping them to have mental stimulation which they otherwise wouldn’t get a contained environment.

Please leave a comment if you would like to ask a question about how you could improve your horses as welfare, I would love to answer them for you.

🐶Patient Progress Update!🐶

I am so incredibly proud of the fantastic progress that little Milo has made! Milo has bilateral hip dysplasia and subluxating patella syndrome, which made him a very unhappy little boy.

His owner came to me in the hopes that we could help him to have a normal life that was relatively pain-free.

As you can see by the two photos (photo 1: before, photo 2: after), after only four treatments Milo has made leaps and bounds in progress in his posture and his temperament. He seems to be much more himself and is much more calm. He is now enjoying longer walks and is much happier in himself.

I cannot wait to see the progress that he continues to show throughout the time that I spend treating him.

If you have any questions, think that your horse or dog would benefit from a little TLC or might need veterinary physiotherapy please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Johnny is an absolute pleasure to treat! This gorgeous, talented old boy is such a softie during his physio sessions and absolutely loves his treatments. He often lets me know how much he loves his treatment by falling asleep afterwards, or even during! If you look at the last photo you can see him nodding off😴

I have been working with him alongside his super talented rider to ensure that he can perform at his best during the eventing season. I can’t wait to see how this dream team progresses!

If you have any questions, think that your horse or dog would benefit from a little TLC or might need veterinary physiotherapy please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
