There’s a lot more to going barefoot than just taking the shoes off. In fact the lack of shoes could be the least important part of your new regime. Read on to find out more…

My favourite view point.

Horses being horses, free choice at its finest. Some choosing to snooze, some choosing to eat, some choosing to be in, some chosing to be out.

As it should be 👌

Shutting a horse in solitary confinement is never the solution, and shouldn't be the norm. It's time to make the change.

🪱🐴 Do you have a repeat offender? Horses that continually come back with positive EquiSal tapeworm test results can be a worry. It's a tricky balance between treating to break the lifecycle and building resistance with frequent exposure. In light of this the experts at EquiSal Tapeworm have released new guidance on re-testing and management techniques to consider.

The advisory comes after recently published research found a lack of efficacy to both praziquantel and pyrantel, our only licenced treatments for equine tapeworm (Nielsen 2023).

"I have this picture I found which was this year (2023) doing a 30-mile endurance race with my 8-year-old daughter riding bridleless and coming out of a river in Idaho. It shows the Cavallo Boots on her horse's feet - it's an awesome picture. Feel free to use it how you wish! We both use these boots and they never come off and have held up through lots of abuse."

⚠ Some of us may have had the first autumnal frosts of the season, so it may be tempting to get on with worming for the possibility of encysted redworm. But hang fire! This parasitic stage of the small redworm can have fatal consequences so it is important that we tackle it at the appropriate time.

🌦 The weather overall is still too mild which means redworm on the pasture are still pretty active. Worming to target the encysted stages now will mean a higher possibility of reinfection after treatment, especially if the horses are still out 24/7 or getting a lot of grazing time. We need to wait for a period when daytime temperatures on the pasture consistently fall below 6 degrees Celsius, which is generally between late December and February. This advice applies to healthy adult horses. Young or old horses may need additional consideration depending on their Autumn results.

If you haven't already done so, there is still time for an autumn worm count for redworm and roundworm, and EquiSal test for tapeworm. A wormer may be required now from those results and then another for the encysted redworm once cold enough.

If in doubt about the best course of action for your horses then get in touch for our free, vet approved, expert advice.

The barefoot journey

Our gorgeous Scooter Anna from British Colombia, has taken the time to write these inspirational words:

“I wanted to transition from metal shoes to barefoot a while back. As I wanted my horses feet to be as naturally strong and healthy as possible, and they live in pastures that don’t require shoes. Most of the training I do with them is in soft sand or grass pasture. So it was worth giving it a go.

Burdock has pretty much always been barefoot, no problem for this wild born mountain horse. I was told that Tanner might not be happy barefoot, but he transitioned so well very quickly. The longer journey was with Stella. The first year I gave up and got her shoed again. The next year I ended up switching farrier as I needed a second opinion. And with trims every 2-3 weeks for a few months, as well as letting her wear her boots in the pasture if needed, and rest from training, her hooves started to shape up and transform. They now are stronger and healthier than they ever were before!

My horses are on a 4-5 weeks schedule for professional trims. And I have learnt some basic stuff so I can go in and give them a touch up if needed in between.

As soon as I ride somewhere with sharp rocks or hard ground I put on I did lots of research years ago and decided that these boots will be a great match for the riding I do. I’m very happy with them! I used a heat gun to adjust the shape of the heal parts to my horses shape. I’ve taken them on rocky mountain trails, through water, mud and sand. Fast canters. And arena work.

The size needs to be correct, so you’ll need to measure the hooves when they’re freshly trimmed. And you can order test shells for sizing.

I was so happy with the boots that I became an ambassador for the brand after a few years. So if you wanna try these boots out, use my code “ANNALENGSTRAND” for a discount through their main website. Again, I wouldn’t be able to keep my horses bare feet if it wasn’t for the use of boots.”

Discover what your horse needs so you can see their hooves improve a little each day as if by magic without feeling overwhelmed or confused.

With this program we look for your horse’s specific problem areas, identify the underlying cause, and introduce simple changes that improve things day by day (and make your life/chores easier too)

All in just 28 days…

I mean… the program is 28 days long… the improvements should last a lifetime!

It’s called the 28 Day Hoof Transformation Challenge, but I admit, the ‘Challenge’ part is used lightly.

Really we’re spending 28 days making things easier, not more challenging!

We’ll break things down and take it 1 step at a time so by this time next month you’ll have a clear idea of what you need to do, why it matters and how to do it.

And this weekend it’s half price! Can’t ask fairer than that!

Taking your horse’s digital pulse is a really easy way to monitor what’s going on. I’d argue that checking the pulse every day is even more important than picking the feet out. We pick the feet out to check them. So add taking the digital pulse to your daily routine.

You should be checking for the strength of the pulse, not the speed. (How much force is being applied to your fingers)
The pulse should be difficult to find, and faint if you do. A strong pulse is a sign that the circulation to the hoof capsule is impaired.
The speed is roughly half the speed of a human pulse – this surprises some people. (28-44 bpm)
Make sure you’re breathing when you take a pulse. For some reasons many people hold their breath, and this makes it harder for you to feel… must be the anticipation! :)

If you’re not sure where to take the digital pulse, or you struggle with your horse's feather you will find the ‘How to Take A Digital Pulse’ Guide in the Hoof Geek Academy FREE resources that will explain what you need to know. Find out more, here https://hoofgeek.com/free-resources/

✅ DID YOU KNOW TUESDAY

Horses only have one less bone than humans

With 205 bones in their skeleton, horses only have one less bone than we do (206). However, this isn’t true for all horse breeds. Arabian horses have one less pair of ribs, lumbar and tail vertebrae, meaning they only have 201 bones.
