We currently have appointments available for our Emmipet Ultrasonic Teeth Cleaning service. If your dog has bad breath, tartar or sore gums this can cause other problems in the body and should be treated as soon as possible. Just like humans, dog’s teeth should be cleaned every day if possible and the sooner they get used to the routine, the better.

PARVO ALERT!!!!

There is currently an outbreak of Parvovirus in dogs in the Oswestry area. We currently have confirmed cases in the hospital.
Parvo is a horrible virus that normally causes bloody diarrhoea (although not always bloody), vomiting, anorexia, temperature fluctuation and lethargy. All symptoms do not have to be present - your pet may show one or many.

This virus is very serious and can be fatal with the best chances depending on immediate treatment. Direct contact with another dog is not necessary since the virus can live in the environment for a substantial amount of time, and can also be transmitted by foxes.

Normally the dogs most at risk are those that are unvaccinated, especially puppies even if they are in the middle of a vaccine course. We would recommend that all dogs are fully vaccinated as this can reduce the severity of the disease.
If your pets are not up to date with their vaccines we would recommended that they have a booster or restart the vaccination course as soon as possible.

Lots of silly people at the beach today totally ignoring the fact that it was MUCH TOO HOT for their dogs!! The temperature of the sand was so hot it was burning my feet, let alone poor dog pads.

Walking your dog in hot weather can cause them as much harm as leaving them in a hot car. When to know it's too hot for a dog walk.

Obviously due to the heat for the next few days there will be NO walkies! It is only 10 o’clock now and over 26 degrees! PLEASE DO NOT WALK YOUR DOG IN THIS HEAT. They will be ok without a walk until it cools down. Anything over 24 degrees can be FATAL for dogs as they overheat. Keep them inside.

Please note that Paws n Claws are still carrying out dog walking services, although in this hot weather we do take every precaution to care for your dog to prevent heatstroke, breathing problems and burnt paws. This may mean that walks are shorter, especially if no shade is available for long stretches. Water is carried at all times, together with a collapsible drinking bowl, and your dog may also wear a cooling bandana to help regulate the temperature. Pavement and road temperatures are checked while walking along (with the palm of the hand) to make sure that they are not too hot and where possible walks will take place in cool grass or woods. Other precautions include suncream on ear tips and regular rest stops. Obviously, if the temperature is just too hot, then the walk will not take place.

Walking Dogs In Hot Weather
As we fast approach the height of summer, dog owners may think it’s the perfect time to make the most of the warmer and drier weather by taking their pooch out for a long walk in the great outdoors.
But with summer heatwaves predicted, pet experts have warned that the high temperatures can be a “silent killer” for dogs. Even taking your four-legged friend for a short walk in the sunshine could prove deadly, particularly for dogs with thick coats, underlying health conditions, or flat-faced breeds.
Dogs can suffer from heatstroke, a serious illness in which they are unable to cool down that can prove fatal - and your dog can be affected even if they just sit in the sunshine for too long.

There are plenty of things that dog owners can do to help their pooch avoid the deadly effects of heatstroke. The Blue Cross advises staying away from the hottest parts of the day when it comes to walking your dog, instead taking them out first thing in the morning or in the evening.
Owners should also check that pavements and roads aren’t hot enough to burn their dog’s paws. You can do this by pressing the palm of your hand to the ground - if it’s too hot for you to keep it there for long, it will be too hot for your pup’s paws to handle.

According to VetsNow , the risk of heatstroke can begin when temperatures are as low as 20°C. Once the mercury climbs to 24° and above they advise pet owners to take “extreme caution” letting their dogs outside, while temperatures above 28° are considered dangerous and even life-threatening for dogs.
Owners of certain breeds should keep a particularly close eye on their pup. Flat-faced dogs such as pugs and bulldogs can especially struggle to keep themselves cool, so are more at risk of heatstroke even when temperatures are as low as 16°.

RSPCA Dog Welfare Specialist, Esme Wheeler, said: "The truth is walking dogs in hot weather can be a silent killer.
“While the majority would never leave our dogs in a car on a hot day, or even take our dogs for a really long walk in the heat, many people may still be putting their dogs at risk even on a short walk, or taking them to places such as fields and beaches with little or no shade.
“We have long-campaigned that dogs die in hot cars, but this year we’re highlighting that dogs die on hot walks, too. The message remains very simple – never leave a dog in a hot car because ‘not long’ is too long, and when it comes to walks,
“‘if in doubt, don’t go out.’”

I have always said that it is unsafe for pets that are loose in cars, especially drivers who think it is ok to have the dog on their knee!
