Does your dog need to calm down a little bit more at home? Check out these calming tips!

1️⃣ Stimulate your dog's mind and promote relaxation by incorporating scent-based activities. Using a snuffle mat, puzzle or playing "find it" games, where treats are hidden around the house, can satisfy their natural instincts and help them unwind. Enrichment is a great tool for stimulating our dogs brains and tiring them out!

2️⃣ Providing your dog with a safe, quiet space, like a crate or gated area, helps them decompress and relax. Make it inviting with a comfy bed and a chew toy or stuffed Kong. When used positively, confinement training teaches your dog that calmness is rewarding and promotes a sense of security. If you don’t have an area for your dog, consider place training with a bed. Making sure dogs all have a designated “calm” space will help them. Think of this like us wanting to relax in bed after a long day, dogs should have their own "calm space" alternative.

3️⃣ Just like us, dogs benefit from moments to slow down and reset. Incorporate short pauses during play or training sessions by asking for a calm behaviour like “sit” or “down.” Reward them for staying still and relaxed. These pauses help your dog’s brain shift gears, teaching them how to self-regulate and stay calm even in exciting situations. This sort of training can teach our dogs to think for themselves more, taking breaks and encouraging that calm brain to take over.

Does your dog constantly demand attention by barking, pawing, or nudging? While it may seem cute at first, these behaviours can become disruptive, especially if you have a larger breed! Here's how to handle it positively:

1️⃣ Ignore the Demands: Avoid giving in when your dog is pushy. Turn away from them and wait for the behaviour to pass.
2️⃣ Reward Calmness: Wait for your dog to settle, then reward them with attention, treats, or playtime. This shows them that calm, appropriate behaviours get the attention they are after.
3️⃣ Teach an Alternative Behaviour: Redirect their energy by teaching commands like 'sit' or 'place' before giving attention. If they know they have to "ask nicely" by providing a behaviour like "sit" first, this can help reinforce calmness in their minds!
4️⃣ Provide Enrichment: Boredom can drive attention-seeking. Use puzzle toys, sniffing games, or structured activities to keep them engaged.
5️⃣ Check their routine: If you find they are restless and attention seeking at a certain point each day, assess their daily routine and see if you can add something like an extra walk, play time, enrichment or even a nap time. Sometimes attention seeking is a dogs way of telling us they are needing something more in their life!

Consistency is key! Over time, your dog will learn that calm, polite behavior gets them what they want. 🐕💖

🐾 Why Teaching Calm is Key! 🐾

Teaching your dog to be calm isn’t just about preventing overexcitement, it’s about building their confidence and helping them handle situations with ease. 🌟

Training your dog to “settle” on command is great for promoting calmness in all situations. Start by guiding them to lie on a mat or bed, rewarding them for staying relaxed. Over time, increase the duration and introduce small distractions to strengthen their focus.

This simple technique not only helps your dog manage excitement but also builds their confidence and ability to stay calm, no matter what’s happening around them. A calm pup is a happy, balanced pup! 🐶✨

The Canine Coven believes in keeping dogs in a calm state of mind, promoting better learning and bond building! Check the website for our popular courses and reach out for any advice and to book on to a course 🐾

🐾 Distraction-Proof Your Dog’s Training! 🐾

Training your dog to listen with distractions is all about starting small. Begin practicing in a calm, quiet environment where your dog can focus on you. Once they’ve mastered that, slowly add distractions like a toy on the floor, a treat in your other hand, or a family member walking by.

Building up distractions at home is key! It helps your dog learn to filter out the noise and focus on you before going out in to the real world. Take your time, taking it slow will give much more time for the good behaviour to build!

With time and patience, your pup will learn that listening to you is always their best choice, even in a world full of exciting distractions! 🐶🙌
