University of Liverpool Veterinary Practice are looking for healthy dogs to take part in research about mobility ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿพ

University of Liverpool Veterinary Practice are looking for healthy dogs to take part in research about mobility ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿพ

You may remember some previous studies we have posted about, and our lovely colleagues are looking for more dogs to get involved with their research efforts. The full list of breeds is below, but they are particularly looking for:
**French Bulldogs**
**Westies**
**Yorkshire Terriers**

What is this study about?
We are recruiting dogs to take part in a study that will help determine how body shape (of different breeds) affect the movement of your dog. With this knowledge, veterinarians can begin to understand how body shape and the way dogs walk and run might be related to specific disease and injury risks in certain breeds.
What does it involve?
Dogs will be asked to perform walking trials in our purpose-built biomechanics lab at the University of Liverpool main campus in Liverpool. We will measure the motion of their joints using skin markers, sensors, cameras and x-ray methods.
Who can take part?
We are looking to recruit young, healthy dogs from the above breeds.

They need to be at least 1 year old but younger than 8 years old, with no signs of health problems that affect their movement. Your dog must currently be going for walks of between 30-90 minutes a day and should be a good healthy weight. They should also be happy to be handled and do some basic tasks: standing still, and walking and trotting in a straight line.
For more information please contact
[email protected]
and there are some lovely articles about their work available here:
https://news.liverpool.ac.uk/.../university-embarks-on.../
https://theguideliverpool.com/university-of-liverpool.../

We are also looking for some greyhounds to take part in a study looking at corn development in this breed - but the volunteer dogs need to be normal (without corns)
For more information please contact [email protected]

๐Ÿ’ฆ Violet the french bulldog enjoying her hydrotherapy session ๐Ÿถ

๐Ÿพ Violet has been having hydrotherapy to help improve her mobility as she has luxating patellaโ€™s

๐Ÿถ Patella luxation, also known as a dislocated kneecap, it is a common condition seen in dogs.
It occurs when the kneecap moves out of its normal groove, causing discomfort and difficulty in movement.
There are different grades of patella luxation, ranging from mild to severe.

Treatment options can include a combination of medication, physical therapy, and in some cases surgical intervention

It's always best to consult with your veterinarian for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan ๐Ÿพ

Violets is a mild case which causes her to exhibit a stiff awkward gait due to being unable to fully extend her hind legs.

๐Ÿ’ฆ The Underwater treadmill provides a controlled environment where dogs can exercise safely.

The buoyancy of the water reduces stress on the joints while the resistance of the water helps to build strength and improve cardiovascular fitness. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿฑ Leo was introduced to the Treadmill today

He had his first post-operative appointment with Ephie for physiotherapy yesterday after having surgery to repair a fracture of his right hind leg.

He had a course of laser therapy after his surgery and now needs to build up the muscle tone in his back leg as he has been on strict rest for the last few weeks, he is now going to have a combination of hydrotherapy and physiotherapy to help with his rehabilitation.

He enjoyed a little potter around in the tank today without any water while he was in for his stitches to be removed and seemed quite happy ๐Ÿ˜ป

We will keep you updated on his progress over the coming weeks ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿพ

Good Friday is traditionally the day to eat hot cross buns.

โŒ please donโ€™t share with your dog! The sultanas and dried fruit in them is toxic to them โŒ

The other dangers to keep out of their way this weekend is Easter Simnel fruit cake and of course all your chocolate๐Ÿซ

If you are worried about your pet has eaten something they shouldnโ€™t over the weekend please do contact usโ€ฆ.
