🐻 On March 29, 2012, Five Sisters Zoo welcomed Carmen, Suzy, and Peggy—three European brown bears who had spent nearly 28 years cruelly chained in a traveling circus.

Their arrival followed a significant fundraising campaign by the zoo to build a purpose-built habitat that would allow the rehabilitation of these bears so they could spend their remaining years in peace, far away from their past suffering.

The rescue of Carmen, Suzy, and Peggy was a pivotal moment that shaped the direction of Five Sisters Zoo. As we witnessed them return to simply being bears after years of torment, we were inspired to continue our rescue work, ultimately becoming recognised for our efforts in the rescue and rehabilitation of bears.

As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we honor the legacy of Carmen, Suzy, and Peggy. Though they are no longer with us, they will always hold a special place in our hearts and remind us of the importance of our work. ❤️

We were recently contacted by Police Scotland and Scottish SPCA regarding six sugar gliders who had been cruelly abandoned in a box outside a Lidl supermarket. Sugar gliders are a tropical species, and being left to fend for themselves in the harsh Scottish winter did not give them the best chance of survival. While we are unable to accommodate every animal in need that comes our way, we remain committed to our animal rescue efforts, which is why we wanted to do everything we could to help in this situation.

The sugar gliders, who are yet to be named, arrived two weeks ago and are currently in a 30-day quarantine period where our dedicated keepers are closely assessing their health and behavior before they eventually move into a new habitat. Be sure to follow our social media for updates on their progress and to find out when you can meet these resilient little survivors! ❤️

It’s World Bear Day! 🌍🐻

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible diversity of the eight bear species found around the world! At Five Sisters Zoo, we are proud to be home to two of these magnificent species: our European brown bears, Eso and Byara, and our Asiatic black bear, Baloo. 🐾

Since 2012, Five Sisters Zoo has offered a home to rescued bears, providing them with refuge from circuses, roadside attractions, and even war zones. Each of our bears serves as a wonderful ambassador for their species allowing us to share their unique stories and highlight the challenges many bears face in the wild and in captivity.

Join us at 3pm today at our European brown bear enclosure for a special keeper talk with our knowledgeable bear keeper, Emma! Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about our amazing bears and hear about their stories! 🗣️

Happy World Rewilding Day 2025! 🌍✨

This year’s theme, “Rewilding Together,” truly reflects our mission at Five Sisters Zoo! It’s the perfect time to highlight our partnership with Beaver Trust, which has allowed us to successfully translocate over 250 beavers across Britain in the past five years! 🦫

Rewilding goes beyond simply bringing these amazing animals back home; it’s about restoring ecosystems and reviving the natural balance in our communities. Beavers are nature’s engineers, creating vital wetlands that benefit countless other species. With your continued support, we can keep pushing forward with this important rewilding work! 💚

Following our recent post about our lion, Skinny, we wanted to share a further update. Skinny faced a setback due to a serious eye condition that required surgery. Unfortunately, the eye could not be saved, and our expert wildlife vet, Dr. Romain Pizzi, performed surgery to remove it.

The good news is that Skinny has made a remarkable recovery and is already back to his normal self! Our dedicated keepers will continue to monitor him closely, ensuring he has everything he needs. 🦁💛

🚨 STOLEN VEHICLE ALERT! 🚨

At 12:55am, three young men trespassed into the zoo grounds and stole a Kubota buggy (pictured below). They also attempted to take one of our quad bikes, which, thankfully, was not taken. These vehicles are vital for our zookeeping team to carry out their daily tasks and care for our animals.

We have attached some footage in the comments and are currently reviewing more camera angles.

If you have any information that could help us recover the buggy or identify those responsible, please contact us.

📢 Please share this post! The power of social media could help us track it down.
