🎄XMAS DANGERS - CANDLES 🕯

🐾When lighting candles, ensure you place them well away from your pets. Consider cats climbing on high surfaces that may be able to reach them.

🐾A safer option would be choosing battery powered LED candles.

Some of our vets and nurses spent a day doing some ultrasonography training with a specialist who kindly came to our East Preston branch recently.

Here is Mortimer the lab (who belongs to head nurse Jess) being a good boy as our ‘patient’ with RVN Zanari ❤️

🎄XMAS DANGERS - DECORATIONS 🎄

🐾Small Christmas decorations can be mistaken as toys by cats and dogs and may lead to them being chewed up and ingested.

🐾It is best to avoid glass bauble and ornaments as they can shatter and cause injury. Choose plastic decorations if possible.

🐾Do not hang edible decorations from your tree - candy canes often contain xylitol, which is a sugar substitute that can be toxic to dogs and cats.

Here are Finley and Harvey sitting next to our Christmas tree at Ferring

🎄XMAS DANGERS - TINSEL 🎄

If ingested, tinsel can act as a foreign body and cause an intestinal blockage.

When decorating a tree or room with tinsel, ensure it is high enough away from your pet so they cannot reach it.

🎄XMAS DANGERS - CHOCOLATE 🍪🍩🍫

🐾 Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. It is a stimulant and acts in a similar way to caffeine.

🐾 The darker the chocolate, the higher the levels of theobromine.

🐾 Signs of chocolate toxicity include vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures and hyperactivity.

🐾If your dog has ingested chocolate, please call the surgery for advice as soon as possible.

❄️Anti-freeze poisoning ❄️

🌀Now that the weather has become colder many of us will begin to use antifreeze to help with defrosting.
🌀Antifreeze is very appealing to our animals as it is quite sweet tasting, however is extremely toxic
🌀Prevention is key so appropriate storage and disposal is essential
🌀If any spillages are made then please ensure you clean this up
🌀If you see your animal ingesting antifreeze or have suspicion of ingestion then please do contact us immediately or our out of hours service

On her first visit (pic 1) she fell asleep on one of our nurse’s shoulders after her vaccination and microchip.

Two weeks later (pics 2&3) she’s now gained just over 1kg and enjoyed lots of treats during her second vaccination 🥰
