The difference between โwaitโ and โstayโ and how do you train them?
๐ Top Tip for building a solid recall.
๐ Practice it often and reward generously when they get it right.
Luna ๐โ๐ฆบ ๐ฉ the mini labradoodle.
Sheโs a serial puller to the point her owner has developed a sore neck and shoulder. Walking her has become an unpleasant experience.
Here she is after our session, learning that:
* if thereโs tension on the lead, the walk stops and she doesnโt get what she wants - to move forward. * if there is a slack lead and sheโs close to her Mumโs side, she gets something she loves ๐ AND she moves forward. A double reinforcement.
Walks donโt need to be an ordeal and they certainly donโt need to be painful. Any dog of any age can learn to do this with the right training. ๐ซถ
๐ Ruby the Rocket Recaller ๐
Hereโs Ruby, a Working Cocker Spaniel who is nearly 6 months old. Just look at those cute, flappy ears ๐ฅฐ
โญ๏ธ Her recall is outstanding for her age. She does this consistently - 100% of the time.
โHow has this been achieved?
From day 1 her owners have worked on building the importance of engagement through eye-contact.
Theyโve been consistent in their approach, reinforcing this behaviour in low distraction environments, then building distraction over time.
๐๏ธ The result is a solid foundation for ALL behaviours they want to teach this adorable Ginger Ninja - including the most difficult.
๐ You can achieve this too, it doesnโt just apply to puppies, itโs never too late for dogs to learn.
Dogs canโt express how theyโre feeling through what we recognise as speech or verbal language, but they can communicate exactly how they are feeling using different parts of their bodies. Their body language can often be very subtle and other times it can be very overt. They use multiple parts of their body at any one time to express their feelings; their faces, including their eyes, ears and mouths, their body and how they hold or position it, their legs and their tails as well as their โvoiceโ.
In terms of tail movements, the type of movement (sweeping/fluid versus rapid/stiff) and the position of the tail (high versus low) matters when attempting to interpret โdoggie tail languageโ.
Letโs start off with a โhappy tailโ.
Take a look at the video and look out for the propeller / windmill tail. The tail is sweeping around and around in broad circles.
What does this mean?
The rapid movement indicates excitement, but it can also sometimes indicate tension. The circular motion, as opposed to wagging from side to side, usually indicates over-arousal. Millie is feeling super-excited and happy because there is a particular scent sheโs tracking and scent tracking is life!
๐ฏ This weekโs top behaviour is TOUCH. ๐๐ป
Itโs a really simple behaviour to teach your pooch and can be invaluable in all kinds of situations.
If your dog has dodgy recall, or your dog pulls on the lead. If they bark at the doorbell or jump up at visitors - teach them this, keep practicing it in all kinds of different environments.
โ
As with all wanted behaviours, the more you repeat and reinforce with reward, the more your dog will do it, instead of rehearsing all of those behaviours you donโt want.
๐ Get practicing!
The lucky winner of the Christmas Giveaway, is Tia Payne - Congratulations Tia! ๐พ๐โ๐ฆบ
This is Luna, she is 7 months old and pulls like a train on the lead. I wish Iโd taken a before videoโฆโฆhere she is after our session yesterday. What a difference, making the walk much more pleasant for her and her owner Sandi. Well done both! ๐โ๐ฆบ ๐๐ผ
Pea Soup and the first day of December, calls for Christmas decorations ๐โ๐ฆบ๐พ
Last week I did a short video on eye-contact and the importance of training this behaviour for you and your dog. This week I thought Iโd show you what it looks like when youโve established and proofed that behaviour. And importantly, what it means as a foundation for building a solid recall. If youโre struggling with reliably recalling your dog, go back to basics, you wonโt regret it. ๐โ๐ฆบ๐พ
Got a new toy ๐ not for myself, you understand? For the dogs that were bred to chase furry and feathered things ๐ฆ๐ญ so we can do some breed enrichment through play. One of the most important things you can do with your canine companions.
Canโt wait to have some fun with it.๐พ ๐โ๐ฆบ
๐๏ธ Eye contact - the single most important behaviour.
Well, no expense was spared in coming up with the Giveaway winner, we pulled out all the stops and went for the most sophisticated of methods, Iโm sure youโll agree?
๐คฉ Samantha Gooderson ๐คฉ is our lucky winner. Congratulations, Sam!
