✨️ Adoption ✨️

We've got a gorgeous male black and white cat who is in need of a loving home 🏡

'Billy' was handed into us a couple of weeks ago and we have been looking after him ever since. We think he's approximately two years old, but we don't know for sure.

Since Billy's arrival, we've neutered and microchipped him.

Billy needs a home with good outdoor space, he will definitely be an outdoor cat! He's not a fan of dogs and would need a home without young children.

If you're interested in adopting Billy, please let us know by calling 01934 624608 or emailing [email protected]

Adoption fees will apply which will include a course of vaccinations.

Thank you.

He's very friendly but quite thin.

If you feel he may be your cat, please call the surgery on 01934 624608.

Thank you, Beaconsfield Vets 🐈‍⬛🐱

Our star patient this month is a lovely 14-year-old cat named ‘Duke’.

Duke presented back in January with a large and infected wound on his left hind leg. The tissue had become necrotic (it had started to die) and had turned black. This had probably been caused by a bite from another cat.

Duke was admitted for an anaesthetic so the wound could be examined, cleaned and debrided (the dead tissue removed). This would be too painful to do with him awake. An x-ray was taken to ensure there was no damage to the bone. As the wound was infected, a swab was taken and sent to the laboratory for testing to ensure the correct anti-biotic was used. Duke started pain relief alongside the anti-biotics. The wound was very large and there was a skin deficit, meaning that there was not enough skin to surgically close the wound. Duke’s leg was bandaged to protect it.

After discussions with our vets and specialist soft tissue vets, Duke’s owners opted to continue with wound management and daily bandage changes to see if the wound could heal to a point where surgery was possible. This approach took a lot of care and dedication by both the veterinary team and the owners as Duke required daily visits for his wound to be cleaned and re-dressed, initially under sedation. After a month, Duke was able to tolerate the bandage changes without the need for sedation and he was so well behaved. Manuka honey dressings were used to help clear the infection and then a wet to dry dressing to help further debride the wound. Once this was achieved, ointment and dressings were used to encourage re-epithelisation (healthy tissue to grow back). Bandage changes were reduced to every 2 days.

Over time the wound started to reduce in size, but the skin was not tolerating the continued bandage dressings. Plans were made to attempt to surgically close the wound by stretching skin down from higher up the leg over the granulation tissue that had formed over the wound area. Granulation tissue is new connective tissue and microscopic blood vessels that form on the surfaces of a wound during the healing process. Vet Helen completed the delicate surgery. To help the skin stretch further, Helen placed tension relieving incisions into the skin making it like a mesh to cover the area. Duke did fabulously well during his surgery and recovery. Bandages were used to protect the area for a week after surgery but then it was healed enough to leave the wound out to breath with a protective lotion applied. Duke had to wear a cone to prevent him licking which he found difficult, but he managed well with.

After another month, Duke was able to be cone free, and the area has even started to grow back fur!

There is no doubt that the outcome for duke would have been very different without the dedication and perseverance of both his owners and the veterinary team here at Beaconsfield vets. Duke was such a good boy throughout all his many months of treatment and was a joy to look after. 😺

Top tips for bonding your bunnies 🐰

Top tips for bonding your bunnies 🐰

If you're looking to bond your bunnies, here are some tips to help you out💚🐰:

1. Make sure your rabbits' living spaces are close to each other, with plenty of hiding spots for privacy.

2. Help them get used to each other's scents by swapping some hay or a towel with their scent.

3. When they're ready, let them hang out together for short periods in a neutral area.

Keep an eye on them, and don't worry if they chase or nip a little. If things get too intense, separate them and try again later.

4. Keep letting them spend time together gradually, and introduce toys as they get more comfortable. More helpful tips and information can be found over at https://rabbitawarenessactiongroup.co.uk/rabbit-welfare/companionship/ 💚 🐰

Please be careful in this warmer weather. Do not walk dogs in the warmer parts of the day. Using cool coats or simply wetting them with a plant spray or hosepipe helps keep them cool. And don’t forget small furries eg rabbits and Guinea pigs. Giving them an additional frozen water bottle as well as their normal one and make sure they are out of the sun. Please phone the surgery if you are worried about your pet.

💗 It’s Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month and the perfect time to say thank you to our wonderful nursing team 💗

This month is Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month - 💚

It’s a month where BVNA, alongside the entire profession, champion all things veterinary nursing. Raising awareness of the skills, training and dedication that goes into being a Student or Registered Veterinary Nurse (SVN/RVN).

It can sometimes be difficult to recognise some of the different roles within the vet team – how can you spot who is an RVN? 🤔

Look out for the following:
💚 An RVN badge (shown in our picture)
💚 The RVN post-nominals

Whenever your pet encounters an RVN in your vet practice – whether alongside you as their caregiver, or as an in-patient behind the scenes – you can be assured that their needs are being met by a highly knowledgeable, skilled and dedicated professional.

Please share this post to pet caregivers everywhere to help us raise public awareness of .

13/05/2024

Don’t forget that microchipping your cat is compulsory from 10th June. Please also make sure all your details are up to date. It is only £25 to avoid a potential £500 fine!

1 month to go....

There are over 9 million pet cats in England, with as many as 2.3 million unchipped!

➡️Compulsory microchipping for all owned cats is coming into place
➡️Owners will have until 10 June 2024 to microchip their cat

Sadly 8 out of 10 stray cats coming into Cats Protection centres are not microchipped which makes reuniting them with their owners an exceedingly difficult task.

Microchipping dogs has been mandatory since 2016, despite this dogs sometimes still are not microchipped or their details kept up to date.

But does microchipping help reunite pets with their owners?

In a report by Battersea 94% of stray dogs that were fully compliant with the microchipping regulations were reunited successfully by Local Authorities with their keepers.

Accurately microchipped dogs are 54% more likely to be reunited with their keepers or owners than unmicrochipped dogs if they go missing.

When polled on Veterinary Voices UK 100% of veterinary professionals scan ALL stray cats to help reunite them with their owners.

If your cat is microchipped already:

✅ Check you have your cats microchip number handy
✅ Check you know which company they are microchipped to
✅ Keep all details up to date
✅ Flag your pet as 'missing' as soon as you have concerns they are lost
