Some useful information to help in this weather ❄️
It’s cold out there!!!
❄️ Here are some top tips for keeping your pet safe during this cold and frosty weather… 🐱 🐶 🐰
🌨 Cats may hide under cars including crawling under the bonnet or wheel arches for warmth. Always check around the wheels and tap the bonnet before starting the engine and setting off.
❄️ Salt and grit which is used on pavements and the roads can be harmful to our pets. They can cause irritation to paws and skin, as well as being toxic if ingested. We advise to wipe or rinse paws after walks, also check paws and in-between toes regularly for any redness, cracks or burns.
🌨 Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) which is commonly found in screen wash, car radiators and de-icer is extremely toxic to cats. Ensure antifreeze is stored safely away from your pet and any spills are cleaned up immediately.
❄️ Provide outdoor small pets with extra bedding for insulation. Partially cover hutches with blankets/tarpaulin or move into a more sheltered area (eg a shed)
Check water bowls and bottles regularly to ensure they haven’t frozen. Bottles can be wrapped with bubble wrap or a thermal sock.
🌨 Provide indoor litter trays if your cat doesn’t want to venture outside. If your cat usually prefers drinking outdoors, ensure these areas aren’t frozen over. Offering extra water bowls can also be beneficial.
❄️ Older dogs or ones with thin fur may also benefit from a coat whilst being walked to help keep them warm.
