The cats have got the cream! 🐱

We’re ‘feline fine’ after our practice was accredited as a silver level cat-friendly clinic by the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM). 🥈

ISFM criteria includes separate dog and cat waiting areas, feline-friendly hospitalisation cages and veterinary equipment for treating cats.

Our team has worked hard to achieve this prestigious award and we're so proud of them all.

🐰 This week is Rabbit Awareness Week, and this year's theme is 'Healthy Diet, Happy Bunnies', so today, we wanted to share a little more about the importance of a balanced diet.

Rabbits require a diet based on 80% grass or feeding hay, 15% greens, 5% good-quality pellets or nuggets (around one egg cup twice a day), and fresh water.

Feeding nuggets ensures your rabbit eats a balanced diet, as it won't have the option to 'selective feed' by picking its favourite parts out of a mixed diet.

Feeding the correct diet is probably the single most important way to ensure a healthy and long-lived rabbit. Here are six top tips for ensuring your rabbit has a balanced diet...

🐇💧 You should ensure that your rabbit always has access to fresh, clean drinking water.

🐇🌿 When providing food for your rabbit, fresh grass is the preferred choice, but when not available, hay is a good substitute that is available all year round and provides them with the nutrients they require.

🐇🌾Hay provides lots of long-strand fibre, keeping your rabbit's gut moving. It is also the closest thing to a natural diet. Rabbits would naturally graze all day in the wild, so please ensure your rabbit has an unlimited supply.

🐇 🥗 Complete rabbit food is also available, but it should not be used as a replacement for hay. Please use it as a nutritional supplement.

🐇🥦 Many plants can be safely enjoyed by rabbits, including broccoli, parsley, spring greens, and dandelions. They also love the leaves from an apple or hazel tree. When feeding them plants, you should keep the portion sizes to a minimum.

🐇🥕 Fruits should be counted as a treat for your rabbit as they are high in sugar. Your rabbit may enjoy a grape, slice of apple, slice of orange or carrots.

Our Pet Health for Life plan is designed to make your life easier. It includes all the doses your pet needs for year-round flea treatment, ensuring you never have to worry about missing their treatment again!

When it comes to parasites in cats and dogs, regular treatments reduce discomfort for your pet and possibly yourself. In addition, regular treatment helps prevent disease from spreading between animals and also stops some diseases in people. Ignoring the problem will only make things worse and may end up affecting not just your pet but your home, too.

Here are some ways to tell if your cat or dog has fleas:
⚪ Bite marks and scabs
⚪ Excessive scratching
⚪ Itchy bite marks on your skin
⚪ Tiny black specks in your pet’s fur or on their bedding

Eggs can lie dormant for months, so you need to treat your cat or dog for fleas all year round.

🥪🌞 Today marks National Picnic Day, signalling the impending arrival of summer and the embrace of outdoor activities with freshly made picnics.

Imagine the joy of your dog joining in the fun on this National Picnic Day. You can prepare a dog-friendly packed lunch to include with your picnic, as many human foods are toxic or can cause gastrointestinal problems for dogs.

Ensuring your pet's safety is paramount. We recommend packing regular treats or even a frozen treat for them to enjoy slowly. Remember, when you're out in the sun with your pet, always be safe, stay in the shade, and avoid the hottest parts of the day.

From contact with other animals to exploring the great outdoors, our pets have plenty of opportunities to pick up nasty parasites daily.

Parasites can negatively affect pets' and humans' health, so it is important to ensure your pet is protected against them.

Parasites are a common occurrence in the UK, and our pets are particularly vulnerable to them. Some of the most prevalent parasites found here are:

🦟 Ticks: Tick bites can pass on diseases such as Lymes Disease and cause allergic reactions or infections at the site of the bite.

🐛 Worms: There is a wide variety of worms, such as tapeworms, roundworms, heartworms, whipworms, and hookworms.

🐛Lungworm: Lungworms are potentially deadly parasites carried by foxes, slugs and snails.

🕷️Moor Fleas: Fleas affect dogs and cats and can be seen all year round. Signs that your pet may be suffering from fleas include itching, scratching and licking. You may also see 'flea dirt' – tiny dark specks that look a little like grains of soil and go red when wet.

Keep your pet protected and book your parasite treatment so they are flea-free to be themselves >>https://ow.ly/4PEO50Sfj27

😺 Today, in England, it is a compulsory requirement to microchip your cat before it reaches the age of 20 weeks.

If your cat is older than 20 weeks and is not microchipped, book an appointment to have one implanted.

If your cat is already microchipped, the law also requires that the details associated with the chip be up to date, so please check that your pet's microchip details are up to date.

Did you know? The hot summer months create an increase in toxic blue-green algae across the UK.

This may appear as green or greenish-brown scum or foam on the water surface and contains toxins harmful to animals. It is not actually an algae but an accumulation of cyanobacteria. Dogs often swallow it by drinking water from an affected lake, river, or pond or by licking their fur after swimming. If you think blue-green algae is present, do not let your dog near it.

Unfortunately, the toxins can cause severe liver damage and can ultimately be fatal. There are currently no known preventative medicines, and prompt veterinary treatment is essential to ensure any chance of recovery.

If you are concerned, please get in touch with us immediately.

Gordon is our wonderful Clinical Director and has spent his entire professional career at Parkhill Vets. Having arrived in Wetherby in July 1989, straight from University, to work with John Hutchison and Lee Cuthbertson at the practices previous site in Hallfield Lane, Wetherby. 🐾

This July will be his 35th year working with us and he is so proud to be part of a practice that can trace it's roots back in Wetherby to the 1920s! It operated from premises on North Street under the ownership of George Davidson before it was sold to George 'Seaton' Powley who was still living next-door when Gordon started.

Gordon is our medicine-guru and expert diagnostic imager. He is happiest when performing ultrasound, endoscopic exams and investigating the sickest of patients. He loves meeting you all face-to-face when consulting and is always eager to improve our services and standards of care at Parkhill with a very dedicated team. 🩺

When not being a fantastic vet, Gordon enjoys salmon fishing, 'social' cycling, playing guitar in a band and camping (although has upgraded the tent to a camper van - apparently he's too old to sleep on the ground now!) ⛺️

Although Gordon has been with the practice for 35 years, he knows there are many clients who can beat the score. So has anyone been with the practice longer?
Please let us know and comment below how long you've been a client with us!

😺 Don't chip away at your cat's safety!

In a week, it will become compulsory for all cats to have a microchip. Cats must be microchipped before they turn 20 weeks old, and their owner's contact information must be accurately maintained in a designated pet microchipping registry.

Owners who fail to comply with this regulation will have 21 days to implant a microchip, or they may be subjected to a fine of up to £500.

If your cat has not yet been microchipped, book an appointment today. Microchipping increases the likelihood of being reunited with your cat if it becomes lost and provides a permanent and reliable method of pet identification.

As part of our Senior Clinics, you may have spotted that we utilise a stance analyser.

But what is a stance analyser❓
Stance analysers are very useful to determine whether a dog is stood on all four legs soundly or if they're lifting weight off a particular limb, which may be due to pain. 💥

This can sometimes be very subtle, so using this amazing piece of equipment helps us diagnose any lameness and gives us the opportunity to treat it!

Our demonstrator in the video is Fig, our Clinical Nursing Manager, Jules' German Shepherd Dog.
He took great joy in participating to show everyone how it's done.

And what a result! Jules is indeed very pleased to see that Fig’s weight distribution across all four limbs is absolutely perfect, as is his stability.

10/10!

This is lovely Daisy 🌼

Daisy came to see us for her annual health check and vaccination, expecting nothing more!

During her routine oral examination, Vet Gordon spotted something unusual - something was well and truly wedged between her teeth across her hard palate.

Daisy’s owner had no idea what it was, nor how long it could have been there as Daisy showed no hint of anything bothering her.
So, we admitted her immediately to sedate her for a closer look.

After careful dissection, Vet Dan was able to safely remove the object, which on closer inspection appeared to be a bone fragment!
🦴
This was surprise as thankfully, bones are not something Daisy’s owner gives her!
❌🦴❌
This really highlights the risks of bones and what damage they can cause.
We’ll be keeping a very close eye on the gum around her teeth and hope it grows back down over the roots that are currently exposed🤞🏼However there is a chance Daisy could end up losing her tooth…🥺🦷

Daisy should now feel a little bit more comfortable and hopefully she won’t get up to any more mischief by snaffling any rabbits and such things when out and about!

Happy National Bee Day! 🐝❤️

Let's create a buzz together by planting more flowers and supporting our local beekeepers.

Bees are essential for pollinating plants, including the fruits and vegetables we enjoy; by cultivating bee-friendly flowers in our gardens, we can offer sustenance and refuge to these vital pollinators.

Remember to be mindful of using pesticides in your garden, as they can be harmful to bees and other beneficial insects.

Do you have any bee-friendly plants in your local outdoor area or garden? We'd love to hear your favourites in the comments below.

🌹 Gorgeous Gypsy-Rose came to see RVN Lucy for her monthly Librela injection to help with her joints.

Librela is a monoclonal antibody (a type of protein) designed to recognise and attach to a protein called nerve growth factor (NGF). Once attached, it prevents NGF from attaching to its receptors (targets) on nerve cells and interrupts the transmission of pain signals.

Gypsy-Rose celebrated her 13th birthday last week - we're sure you'll agree that she looks amazing! We hope we age that well.....🧑‍🦳

If you would like any advice on your aging pets, we're currently offering Senior Pet Clinics with our nurses.
For £85, we will ensure they receive a full MOT; including:
⚕️Full clinical exam and dental check🦷
💉Blood testing
👀Schirmer tear test for dry eyes
🐕‍🦺Stance analyser to assess weight distribution
🩸Blood pressure measurement
💧Urine sample testing
🦴Body Condition Scoring and diet assessment🥗
🦮Exercise analysis
📋 Once all results are ascertained by the nurse, a Veterinary Surgeon will explain any findings and what options you have.
