It's Guinea Pig Friday! Ten Guinea Pigs, Adolf Dietrich, c. 1925

Adolf Dietrich is the most celebrated Swiss naïve artist. Born to a poor farmer's family, he was the youngest of seven children. Though he showed talent at an early age and a teacher suggested that he become a lithographer, the family needed him to work as a farm hand and in a local textile mill.

All his life he lived in his parents house and remained a bachelor, working at the farm and textile mill and painting only on Sundays.

He never received any formal training, and his works were exhibited for the first time in 1913, in Germany, where he received some recognition.
His house was said to be filled with animals: kittens, guinea pigs, mice, birds and porcupines.

By 1937 he was considered as the principal representative of naive art.
