Alora Vets RCVS Accredited Tier 3 Small Animal Vets Follow us on TikTok It is important to know that not all veterinary practices are the same.

The vast majority of veterinary practices are graded as General Practice and there are approximately 300 in Scotland. The highest standard of practice, such as Alora, is graded as Veterinary Hospital. There are only 8 of those in Scotland and Alora is the only one in Central Scotland outside of Glasgow and Edinburgh. One of the most important aspects of being a Veterinary Hospital is that we have

members of staff on the premises 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These members of the veterinary team are specifically responsible for the care and observation of any in-patients.

- They are small blood sucking parasites that carry a whole host of diseases.
- Ticks transmit Lyme Disease and many other dangerous diseases.
- They can be very hard to see, they may look like a tiny skin lump.
- Ticks live in tall grass, bushes and wooded areas etc.

๐“๐ข๐œ๐ค ๐ฅ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž๐œ๐ฒ๐œ๐ฅ๐ž- ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฅ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ ๐ž๐ฌ;
- Eggs, hatch into six-legged larvae and attach to the host.
- Engorged larvae detach from host and moult into nymphs.
- Nymphs attached and feed off larger host.
- Engorged nymphs detach from host and moult into adults.
- Adult tick feeds onto host (dogs/cats) mates, becomes engorged and drops off.

๐‡๐จ๐ฐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ซ๐ž๐ฆ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ฆ? โŒ
- Use an appropriate tick removal tool (you can purchase these in practice) to grasp close to the skin and gently twist until tick lets go.
- Ensure the head has been removed and not still embedded into the skin.
- If you're not comfortable to remove at home, please contact the practice and book an appointment with our Vet Nurses.

The 6 month healthy pet check is one of the many benefits to our Pet Health Club. Our Vet Nurses will do a head-to-toe check on your pet and this will include coat/skin, eyes, ears, oral health and more. This is a great way for our Vet Nurses to catch any health problems before they develop.

LAPAROSCOPIC SPAYS Here at Ayrton we are very proud to be one of the only practices in Scotland offering laparoscopic (keyhole) spays. Since the first one was performed in 2007, hundreds of these procedures have been carried out and now about 90% of all spays in the hospital are carried out laparoscopically. The main advantage is there are just 2 tiny incisions to heal meaning that there is no requirement for exercise restriction post-operatively -especially good for bouncy dogs! We also do keyhole spays in cats and rabbits.

This month has been Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month -an opportunity to celebrate the fantastic work our veterinary nurses do. So much of the behind-the-scenes work at Ayrton is carried out by these wonderful people. Here is a list of just a few of the tasks they do: *prepping patients for surgery *monitoring anaesthetics *take xrays *weight checks and nutrition advice *cleaning and sterilising surgical instruments *bandaging *carrying out physiotherapy *preparing prescriptions At Ayrton we have Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVN's) Diann and Victoria as well as nursing assistants Chloe, Tyler and Niamh, and Student Veterinary Nurse Niamh. We had a creepy crawly afternoon at Ayrton today! The video shows ear mites from a pup with itchy ears. It's got us feeling itchy too but the good news is they don't affect people!

This is Sonic who came to visit us last week. Here he is scoffing his favourite treat -mealworms! Isn't he just adorable?

Meet Millie! Millie is a 3-year-old African Pygmy Hedgehog who belongs to Student Nurse, Rebecca. Since they are desert animals they need to be kept warm so Millie lives in an indoor guinea pig cage in her own room. Hedgehogs require a high protein low fat diet -she eats dry cat food and her favourite snack is dried mealworms! Millie loves to run around the hallway and torment the cats but she doesn't enjoy bath time. Although African Pygmy hedgehogs are extremely adorable, they require a lot of time, effort, care and attention. African Pygmy Hedgehogs live for about 4-6 years. Here is a video of Millie well recovered after being spayed recently.
