The purple poppy pays tribute to animals lost in service, and to those who serve us today 💜
Animals like horses, dogs and pigeons were often drafted into the war effort, and purple poppies can be worn to remember the service of these animals and the lives that were lost.

Leo looks so proud of himself here!

Often pets can be scared of coming to see us as they think something bad is going to happen each time 💉🩸🩹🤕

You can help your dog by bringing them to see us just for treats and cuddles, this helps them to become familiar with the practice and with us so that it’s easier for us to examine them the next time 😊

We have made the difficult decision to close our Whitby branch on Saturday mornings.

Our amazing team will still be available for you at our main Upleatham site 8:30am - 2pm every Saturday and all of our clients are very welcome there.

There are no changes to our opening times Monday – Friday. We aim to reopen at Whitby on Saturdays as soon as we can and will let you know once this service is available again.

Thank you for your understanding,

Clevedale Vets.

🐹Guinea Pig Awareness Week🐹

Guinea pigs are sociable animals and need to live with friends.

🐰Although rabbits and guinea pigs are often kept together, this is not ideal as they have different nutritional requirements and communicate in different ways.

The best pairing is single-sex pairs or small groups of neutered guinea pigs ❤️

🐹Guinea Pig Awareness Week🐹

Keeping your guinea pigs healthy is so important and picking up on any signs of disease quickly can help them to make a speedier recovery.

Here are some top tips for your daily health check:
👍Check their eyes and nose for discharge or mucous
👍Check that the coat is glossy and the skin is healthy
👍Ensure that they are moving around normally
👍Note any changes in their behaviour
👍Make sure that all of their food is getting eaten equally
👍Check the bedding for normal urine and droppings
👍Look at the skin around their bottom for wet patches or signs of fly strike

If your guinea pig is showing any signs of illness or disease, please get in touch!

🐹Guinea Pig Awareness Week🐹

🥕Guinea pigs are vegetarians and need high levels of fibre in their diet to keep their digestive system working correctly. Like rabbits, they produce soft droppings which they then eat in order to absorb more nutrients!

🥦Unlike rabbits, guinea pigs can’t produce or store Vitamin C properly, so their diet needs to be supplemented with foods that contain high levels of Vitamin C, such as fresh vegetables.

🍡Nuggets should be fed instead of muesli, otherwise, they will just pick out the pieces of food that they like best! Alongside nuggets, you should feed hay, grass, and fresh veggies. Grass-based snacks can also be fed as treats occasionally and clean, fresh water should always be provided.

5 things to include in a complete diet:
1. Hay/grass
2. Nuggets
3. Healthy snacks
4. Fresh veggies
5. Water

🐹Guinea Pig Awareness Week🐹

Giving your piggies the best place to live just takes a few simple steps but is vital to ensure that they are kept happy and healthy.

The ideal environment for you guinea pig should be:
☺️Draught-free
☺️Predator-proof
☺️At least 5ft x 2ft of indoor space with a much larger run attached to it
☺️Out of direct sunlight to prevent heatstroke
☺️Away from any electrical cables
☺️Kept between 17℃ and 20℃

It should also have:
☺️Lots of hiding places
☺️Deep piles of hay for nesting and tunneling
☺️Separate toilet areas from the sleeping area
☺️Non-slip flooring

To ensure that your guinea pig’s home is kept in good order, check and clean the area regularly, here is a checklist that you can use:

Daily tasks
✅Clean out toilet area
✅Remove soiled bedding
✅Wash food and water containers
✅Replace fresh hay and water
✅Remove any old uneaten food

Weekly tasks
✅Remove and replace all bedding
✅Place a small amount of old bedding back into the area for a familiar smell for your piggies

Monthly tasks
✅Remove everything and clean thoroughly
✅Clean the housing with animal safe cleaner
✅Replace bedding

Follow to find out more about how you can ensure your guinea pigs' environment meets their needs!

🐹Guinea Pig Awareness week🐹

Guinea pigs communicate using several noises, including the well-known ‘wheek-wheek’ call – a sign of excitement or to find a friend – and a low ‘purring’ sound, which they make when they are feeling content and chilled out. They also make a series of short ‘putt-putt’ noises when they are exploring.

Here are some top tips for keeping your guinea pigs happy:

🌟Give them lots of toys to play with

🌟Hide food around their enclosure to encourage foraging behaviour

🌟Provide hiding places for them to go when they are scared

🌟Ensure they have constant access to food, water and friends

⚠️Watch out for grass awns!⚠️

🌱It's definitely grass awn season around here, we have seen them cause problems in our pets every day over the past few weeks. We have seen them getting stuck in the eyes, ears, nose, paws and skin!

🐶Grass awns tend to cause more problems in hairy dogs like spaniels, and Theo is a prime example, he managed to get 6 awns in his ears at once. After a light sedation, all of the awns were removed and he felt a lot more comfortable!

👀You can prevent them from causing a problem in your pet by:
- checking the ears, eyes and coat after each walk
- trimming the hair between the toes
- keeping the coat short
Doing this helps to prevent the awns from going unnoticed in the hair and then working their way into the skin.

🐾Signs of grass awns include:
- shaking the head
- licking the paws
- swelling or wounds between the toes

📞If you notice any of these signs, please call us on 01947 825042

How do I know if my rabbit is happy?

Happy rabbits often do binkies, as can be seen in the video below 👇

To make your rabbit happy, they need to have:
🏡 enough space to move around properly
🐰🐰friends
🥕 fresh food
🐶 safety from other animals
⚽️ toys to play with
🪵 things to chew

Playing games with your rabbit is a great way to keep them entertained, as well as ensuring that they are exercising. You can even train them to play fetch or jump over obstacles!

A stressed rabbit may stop eating, hide a lot, bite, thump at the ground or grind their teeth, if you notice any of these signs, please ask us for advice by calling us on: 01947 825042
