❄️ 𝐖𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐆 ❄️

We are now in a period of cold, so you should be considering your approach to encysted redworm for your horses if you haven't already. These steps should be taken even if your horses worm counts have been done recently and were low, as encysted redworm can not be detected through faecal egg counts.

Step 1- Test for tapeworm if your horse has not been tested in the last 6 months. Kits can be ordered from https://nutrifec.co.uk/shop.html

Step 2- Identify your horses risk using the link below to make a decision on if your horse is eligible for encysted small redworm blood tests (low risk horses) or treatment is required (medium and high risk horses). https://www.whatsyourwormrisk.com/

Step 3: Decide on your encysted redworm approach based on step 2s result. This will be encysted redworm blood tests for low risk horses or treatment with moxidectin (or 5 day fenbendazole if moxidectin is unsuitable). Depending on results of step 1, you may need to use equest pramox.

Step 4- weigh your horse! Make sure you are dosing accurately and not underdosing. If any spit out/ spillage at dosing remember to equate for this. Make sure you are aware of the correct method to deworm a horse and read the data sheets prior to use.

Step 4: we advise a resistance test 10-14 days post treatment to review dewormer effectiveness. Kits can be ordered from https://nutrifec.co.uk/shop.html

Equest is only licensed for horses over the age of 4 months (6.5 months for equest pramox). Equest is licensed for use in pregnant and lactating mares.
Equest should not be used in underweight horses and is not licensed for donkeys. In these cases 5 day fenbendazole (5 day panacur guard) may be more suitable but it is worth noting that fenbendazole does not treat bots. There is widespread resistance to fenbendazole.

Care should be taken when using moxidectin in miniature horses. Treatment dose should be based off a weighbridge weight to ensure accurate dosage and reduce the risk of side effects.

Moxidectin treatment will cover bots. There are no available tests for identifying bot burdens (though they can sometimes be seen on gastric scopes).

PLEASE remember the only people legally able to advise on deworming are veterinary surgeons, pharmacists or registered animal medicine advisors (sqps).

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗥𝗔𝗠𝗔?

I always mention that I am a qualified RAMA, but what does that actually mean and why is it important?

A Registered Animal Medicines Advisor (RAMA) has an important and responsible role, contributing to animal health. They are entitled to prescribe and/or supply certain veterinary medicines under the Veterinary Medicines Regulations, but to do so must act professionally including following the rules of the Regulations and of an associated Code of Practice.

This qualification and continual CPD to remain registered means I can legally advise on treatment based on parasites identified through faecal egg counts and tapeworm saliva tests.

Please take care when gaining advice on worming, just because businesses offer worm counts does not mean their staff can legally advise on treatment.
