Laparoscopic ovarie-ectomy, or 'lap spay', is a minimally invasive surgical procedure which is now considered to be the gold standard in neutering for female dogs. We are 1 of only 2 practices in all of Cumbria to offer this technique. It uses two very small (0.5-1.2cm) keyhole ports to enter the abdomen of a female dog. This results in a faster recovery and less pain. It is suitable for dogs 5kg and upwards.

We offer a fixed price package on this procedure > £360 - (any size) we can take referrals from other practices on a procedure only basis.

Spring time on the farm!!!! The calf is just minutes old and was born by C-section after the cow got into difficulty.

One of our newest recruits Declan McIntyre led the surgery and was assisted by Mark ( not so new!!!).

Pleased to say mother and calf both doing well!!!

We have been proudly independent , multi species practice for 50 plus years

We welcome open and honest conversations regarding the cost of treatments. These conversations are always private , non judgemental and supportive.

Although gold standard treatment plans are always desirable we realize that advances in surgery and medical care can often leave this route cost prohibitive for uninsured clients. Please be reassured that other less expensive options are often still extremely effective at protecting animal welfare.

We have an extremely talented group of clinicians, nurses and supportive staff who work 24 hours a day 365 days a year providing all of our own routine and emergency care.

They are not responsible for setting fees so please be kind in your interactions with them.

We still have the gorgeous 4 year old Some Stuff available for adoption at Cumbria Greyhound Trust, he’s looking for his forever home following retirement and just needs a chance..!

He is a beautiful black male who has one of the softest and shiniest coats we have had for a while, with lovely white flecks speckled in. He's a bit of a d***y boy, he'll lean right into you and absolutely loves attention and walks, but is a lazy lad too! He's good with other dogs of all sizes and great with children

Congratulations to our dedicated hard working team!!!!

Today we have confirmation from the Royal college of Veterinary surgeons that we continue to uphold the exceptional standards required to achieve accreditation in Small animal , Farm and Equine Practice.
This not an easy process and we have achieved continuous accreditation for well over 10 years!!! This is testament to the hard work of all the staff in striving to continually improve our standards of care.

From September 1st we are seeing new prescription recommendations from the RCVS - Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons come into action!

We are asking for our loyal clients' patience and understanding while veterinary practices across the country try to change their protocols to reflect the new requirements from the RCVS.

In many cases protocols will be very similar and might not impact you at all, but you may notice some slight changes to your practices protocol in prescriptions and we ask that you remain understanding while this is implemented.

One of the biggest factors that may impact you as a client is that anti-parasitics (flea, worm and tick treatment) are going to be in the same band as antimicrobials and important drugs meaning that there needs to be a physical assessment and a physical examination before the *new* prescription of an anti-parasitic. This could result in slightly more regular, in practice, checks than you are currently used to. NB 'new prescription' refers to a different drug, different dose, different frequency than your pet is currently on, or when your current prescription comes to an end.

The RCVS have said that:

"We realise that there are differences in opinion within the profession regarding the inclusion of antiparasitics in this part of the guidance.

There are a range of factors set out in the guidance to be taken into consideration when prescribing POM-Vs, and we understand that the opinion of some is that these can simply be applied to antibiotics and antiparasitics to ensure responsible prescribing.

However, it is our view that these medicines should be treated differently to other POM-Vs because the risk of uncontrolled use is greater, for example, resistance and environmental impact.

As such, the change requires a physical examination in order to positively impact prescribing behaviours and change attitudes to these medicines."

This is Scruff who is 4 years young. Unfortunately he has elbow dysplasia which leads to early onset arthritis. (Want to know more about elbow dysplasia then click here

Prior to diagnosis and treatment he was really struggling with his normal exercise routine.

Scuff comes to see us once a month for a monoclonal antibody injection which alleviates his symptoms and lets him live his life to the full. These injections are a novel and extremely safe treatment and don't have the safety concerns of traditional anti-inflammatory medications.
We are very pleased he is back where he belongs enjoying the great outdoors.

Old age is not a diagnosis!!!! Many elderly animals suffer needlessly when mobility issues and arthritis are put down to age and not addressed

Both young and elderly animals can suffer from arthritis. The majority of young animals have an underlying condition of the joint(s), which with early diagnosis can prompt treatment and a vastly improved in quality of life.
