Today, I had the pleasure of spending time with these beautiful wolfhounds. Their humans (my friends) were getting married. I had to drive them 30 miles to the wedding venue, deep in the Northumberland countryside.

As the satnav displayed just over a mile to go, the dogs got to their feet and started to pant, drool and whine. They were extremely restless. It was as if they recognised the location and knew we were almost there. I had to assume they’d perhaps made this journey before. Maybe during the wedding planning. The boys became increasingly impatient, the closer we got.

When we arrived, I led the boys out of the vehicle and attempted to walk them around the perimeter of the grounds - to relieve themselves before going inside. They were not interested. They wanted to get to the venue. The two wolfhounds - who are usually calm and well-mannered on the lead - pulled me towards the doors. They were quickly greeted by their owners and I remarked, rhetorically - “They’ve been here before then!” “No.” my friends answered. They’d never been anywhere near this location before!

So it would seem, these clever hounds, with their super olfactory senses and an unbreakable bond with their humans, was how they knew! After all, it’s entirely possible for a dog to smell their owners from up to eleven miles away!

Dogs possess up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to about six million in us. The part of a dog's brain that is devoted to analyzing smells is about 40 times greater than ours!

For context 37p in 1970 is equivalent to about £7 today. The cost of a banned breed licence this week is £92.40!

Some of you may even remember the pre-decimal price of 7 Shillings & 6 Pence! Which was converted to 37.5p before it was rounded up to 37p in 1971. It was as estimated that half of all dog owners ignored this law. Research has shown that dog owners are in favour of reintroducing dog licences in the U.K.

A harness with a seat-belt attachment is the best option. It’s safer than a collar in the event of an accident, because it evenly distributes the force on your dog’s body if you were to crash or brake suddenly

Rule 57 of the Highway Code states:
"When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. "A seat-belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars."
