I would like to ask everyone who has visited the island of Mauritius, staying at a hotel to name the hotel and your experiences with regards to animal welfare and their treatment of the strays during your holiday please.
Also how you booked your hotel and with whom (travel agent etc)?
I will be collating this information for a formal report to the hotels and travel agents to advise future tourists that regularly ask me which hotels are animal welfare friendly.
So please be professional and factual in your responses and please NO swearing!
Just constructive responses about your experiences and also how you would like to see the strays treated by the hotels and staff and what they can do to improve.
Ie- sterilising the strays, water bowls, dog friendly areas where guests can feed the dogs, allowing us and other organisations around the island to come and feed the dogs daily etc
Thanks,
Lisa

This is a desperate plea from the heart!
I’m struggling guys and need help!!
We are drowning in a sea of pups and I am struggling financially to care for them all 😭😭
We are a group of 3700 people and if everyone donated just £1 that could make the difference on whether these pups live or die!
They need food, vaccinations, flea/tick/worming, sterilisation once old enough and a bed to sleep in!
In the last week alone we have had 15 pups dumped on the beach!
3 just yesterday only a few weeks old covered in fleas, ticks and maggots in an horrendous condition!
Thank you Buchan and friends for going out late at night to rescue them and took them home to pick off all the maggots and ticks and bathed them to remove the fleas.
They have been to the vets this morning and are now safe at the shelter.
We still have 5 pups only around 4 to 5 weeks old living in a tunnel under a monument on the beach.
We have nowhere at the shelter for them and we have asked others but they also have nowhere.
For me to be able to take them I need to build yet another area at the shelter which I just don’t have the money for right now.
We are feeding them everyday and a very kind lady from the USA is also spending many hours a day with them trying to gain their trust as they are completely feral.
But they are not safe!!
They are in danger every minute from the bigger dogs and from sadly humans!!
We already have 15 pups at the shelter on top of our 20 plus adult dogs 😭

My project was always to care for the strays at the hotel and public beaches on the East Coast and a shelter was never in my plans.

But we have helped so many dogs that cannot be returned to the beach for one reason or another and now a sea of pups with little to no future that will grow up to be more adult dogs and a shelter of 50!
The shelter is not even completed yet but so far I have spent thousands and still have more to do!
Financially these dogs all rely on me and it’s a scary place for me to be.
Without me there would be nowhere for them to go, no food, no vet care and no hope!!
SO PLEASE CAN YOU ALL SPARE JUST £5 TO HELP ME BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY TO HELP THESE STRAYS THAT HAVE NOONE ELSE!!

Below are the ways you can donate and please reference pups.

The publicity of this cruel and barbaric system in Turkey is gaining public momentum and is now featuring on news channels around the world! Boycott Turkey as a holiday destination please! 🙏And let this be a lesson to Mauritius and other countries around the world that still kill their animals instead of using the system of mass catch-neuter-release

Meet Daisy! 💕🌼
Many of you will know Daisy because of a situation that happened at the hotel today.
She really is the sweetest, friendliest, gentle and most loving little girl.
Sadly this makes her an easy target for something untoward to happen to her.
Today I was contacted by Lynne Robinson and her husband who were very concerned about Daisy.
I made a video call with them and we went to find her.
She was lying under a sunbed on the beach and although breathing was unresponsive.
It was a very hot day and she was suffering from severe dehydration and sunstroke.
Another guest went to ask staff for some water for Daisy but they refused any kind of help.
Between guests water was given in several glasses and within half an hour Daisy was back to her normal self.
However her condition had been made worse by drinking from the swimming pool and the sea which causes them to be sick and continues the cycle of dehydration.
Despite my efforts over the years with this hotel to let us provide the basic needs of the animals with food and water, I have been unsuccessful.
I have stuck my neck out so far at times that it’s almost been chopped off!
I’ve been threatened with lawsuits and more for speaking out!
The only thing that can ever have any influence on this hotel is tourists speaking up and asking to speak to management about their treatment of the strays.
Without this pressure nothing will ever change here and strays will continue to suffer and die.

There has been a family at the hotel that left today that took all these lovely photos of Daisy and were very sad to say goodbye today.
But I won’t rest now until I’ve found a family for this beautiful girl.
So if you are in Europe or the U.K. and have a Daisy shaped hole in your heart and could be her forever family and take her away from the risk of being at this hotel then please get in touch!

6 years ago there were two sisters at this hotel called Daisy and Dora.
Dora was adopted and lives in the U.K. but Daisy disappeared with the rest of the dogs before we could find her a home and this is something I will never ever forget!
I have to try and stop history repeating itself!

Meet Justin our stray of the month from Sunrise Attitude Hotel Mauritius.
He really is a people dog and desperately wants his own family and a soft and comfy bed to call his own!
I will personally help to sponsor towards this deserving boys travel overseas to Europe if anyone can open their hearts and home to him! 🙏
He was one of the many nameless dogs on the public beach until spotted by a kind guest of this resort because he had severe eye infections and a limp which we think was caused by a car hitting him.
The guest sponsored his foster care until he got better and he wad then released back to the beach.
However the resident hotel pack are very territorial so he turned away from the beach and now prefers to spend time inside the resort where he can feel safe.
Justin is an older boy around 4 to 5 years of age we think but we can't say for definite as he seems to have had a hard life.
He is so friendly, loving, calm and quiet and likes to lay around the resort area with the guests.
He is hoping one of these guests could be his forever family .
Could that family be you?
He is microchipped, sterilised, fully vaccinated and will be snap dx4 and Brucella tested.
Now all he needs is you! 🙏
If you are interested in Justin please contact me on WhatsApp +4407496924661

Lottery draw will be tonight, as I have been waiting for confirmation of the 3 last numbers.
We now have 120 entries which is amazing, so thankyou to all that have entered so far 🥰
If you would like to join for August then please just leave your name below in the comments.

The prize pot this month will be £240.00 🎉

I would just like to say that it is extremely generous and kind when someone donates the money they win back to the charity but I want you guys to benefit from being in the lottery and for me to be able to give back for the support you give me.
So if a person wants to donate the money back to the charity they can only do this once.
If that same person wins again at any point then they must accept their winnings.

And PLEASE don’t feel that you should donate your winnings back to us because others have.
This is my way of thanking you guys for supporting our Mauritian strays!

I have some very sad news 😞
Despite everyone’s best efforts Troy didn’t make it! 😭
He took a turn for the worst last night and despite being on a drip and antibiotics it just wasn’t enough.
This morning he went into his basket and went to sleep and didn’t wake up! 💔
If only we had known about him sooner maybe it would have been a different outcome but sadly it was too late for this gentle boy!
This poor boy must have been roaming around in this appalling condition for many many months but somehow invisible!!
He was seen near restaurants and public places but no one gave him the basics of food and water let alone kindness and rescue!
Please let this be a lesson that when you see an animal in distress and needing help, don’t just take a photo and post it all over social media and expect someone else to help!
Take action there and then and save them from days more suffering and distress whilst others try to find them!

I have sat here crying this morning for a dog I have never met but managed to help from thousands of miles away in the U.K. whilst in Mauritius he was invisible to humans because of his condition! 🤬

Thank you to Barbara Rebecca Elkaz who found Troy purely by chance and Lorena Gaus and Keyur Patel who did their best to try and save him!
Sadly it was just too late but in his final days he was cared for, had a soft bed and food and water.

For those who have donated for Troy, if you would like your donations returned please get in touch with me directly on WhatsApp 07496924661.
If you are happy for your donation to be used for other dogs needing our help and care please also let me know.

RIP Troy and I’m so sorry you were let down by humans who didn’t care enough to help you before and we were just too late!

It will soon be time for our next Lottery draw on the 28th July! 😊
We now have 117 entries so the prize pot this month will be £235.00 🥰
You are all amazing and I couldn’t do this without you guys! So thank you so very much for your support 🥰

It would be amazing if we could just find another 3 people to make the numbers upto 120 this month and a prize pot of £240 and £960 for our project animals.

As well as our 60 to 80 dogs fed daily on the east coast at the hotel and public beaches, we have many adult dogs and pups in our two shelters that are paid for entirely by me.
This money is much needed and will help towards their food and vet costs. 😊

Without your support and donations I would not be able to carry on our work.

The project and shelters are expanding and evolving everyday and behind the scenes we face many difficulties and this week alone we have had to deal with finding 3 dogs that had passed away either from poisoning or hit by cars. 😭💔

We also found our Troy who is barely recognisable as a dog and on top of his horrendous mange, emaciated body he also has a large tvt!

I’ve attached recent photos of Troy, our Brisee Verdiere Shelter dogs and some of the strays we feed everyday.

I have also been contacted today by a rescuer and feeder in Camp Thorel who is struggling to cope with the amount of dogs and cats there needing help so I have agreed to help her too.

Once again, thank you to all who support us and make it possible for us to care for so many dogs and cats that desperately need us and have absolutely no one else who cares if they live or die!

Thank you so much to every single one of you for your support for our Animal Welfare Project. 🥰
There are still just a three people that haven’t set up their monthly standing order or replied to my messages.
Can you please let me know if they still want to join or not so that your numbers can be released if not.
Or if the payment may have been in a different name.
Julie Buckley
Penny Hows
Kester Asbury

The first draw will be on Saturday the 29th of June and thereafter the last Saturday of each month.

If you would like to join there is still time.
Funds are desperately needed to be able to carry on with the project past the end of this year 😞
And without more funds we will not be able to complete our much needed project shelter!

Entry is £10 per number and will be by monthly standing order to the charity bank account.
The more people that enter the bigger the prize will be and the more dogs we will be able to help.
Current prize fund is £210 which is 20% of the total fund and the remaining 80% will be used towards the running of the project and the many strays we care for daily.

To enter please email me on the below address or comment below and I will send you your number and the bank details for the standing order.

Thank you to everyone for your support and for your compassion for the strays of Mauritius ❤️🐾

22/05/2024

We now have 75 people who have committed to joining the monthly lottery.
Thank you to all of you but we need at least 25 more members to make this worthwhile.

Our project shelter is progressing and all the perimeter fencing and gates are now complete.
We need concrete work and blocks under the fencing and gates to make it completely secure and this will hopefully be. Completed over the next few weeks.
But this is only the start as we need to upgrade the existing kennels with tiling, grass and roofing, buy houses, beds etc.

We really need this shelter for our project dogs that need treatment from illness and injury.
This will also be home to our permanent residents of which there are at least 20 adult dogs.

We are also currently caring for a mum and 6 pups, a mum and two pups, 3 abandoned pups, 2 more picked up whilst on another rescue and one has a possible broken leg.
Then we have 5 others all under 1 year of age!

This is on top of the daily feeding of the around 80 hotel and public beach dogs and the strays outside our house at Bel Air.

We have more hotels contacting us to help after hearing of the success of the project and our results.

We are totally overwhelmed and have had to put a stop to any more rescues outside of our area as we just cannot cope either with space, man power to care for them and financially.

I just cannot carry on funding this alone, I really do need help or we won’t be able to continue to rescue anymore.

Please consider signing up to the lottery and helping me with this next stage in the project.
The strays really need us as without us no one will care if they live or die!!

As well as the lottery I have attached a photo of the other ways you can donate.

If you have any other ideas for fundraising and sponsorship in the U.K. please get in touch.

The future of the next 12 months of the project really hangs in the balance 😞

19/04/2024

Many of you will remember I’m sure the very sad story of Skye and her 9 pups born at the children’s club in Residence Hotels grounds.

The circumstances surrounding the whole incident and the following few days will haunt me forever.
As requested by the hotel I removed all 9 of Skye’s three day old pups and put them all into paid foster care back in November 2023.
Sadly Skye was just too young to care for her 9 pups and rejected them as she was nothing more than a 10 month old pup herself.
Despite many attempts to catch Skye to sterilise she evaded all capture even when heavily sedated.
The very sad ending for Skye is that a month after giving birth she disappeared from the hotel. She had been a resident stray there since birth and despite many searches and appeals, she has never been seen again 💔

The 9 pups had to be bottle fed every 2 hours for several weeks and raised without a mum.
Thanks to the best care given to them by foster mum Elo La against all odds, all 9 pups survived. 🥰

Then came the difficult decision on what I was going to do with them and what was to be their future! Suitable adoptions in Mauritius were not an option and so I had no other choice than to send them overseas.
There was no way I was returning them to the beach to fend for themselves and disappear the same as Skye did.
I had to protect them at all costs, the very least I owed to their beautiful mum 💔

5 of the pups were relocated to an association in France in February and March with the help of Lorena Gaus of The animal house rescue.
And just 2 days ago the other 4 were relocated to the U.K. in collaboration with my dear friends at The Retreat Animal Rescue Farm Sanctuary and Cafe and Earth Dragons International Dog Sanctuary.

Hope and Iris already have Foster’s lined up but I am still looking for foster homes for the cheeky Tansy 💙and the bouncy Lily 💕
So if you are from the Kent area and have a Mauritian pup shape hole in your heart to fill, please get in touch!

As you can imagine all this has come at a very high financial cost to me personally and the 4 PAWS Animal Welfare Project.
As I very often do, I’ve let my heart rule my head but I didn’t see any other option for these beautiful pups. 🥰

The staggering total of the costs involved is just over £9100.00!
I have detailed all costs involved in the rescue, foster, vets fees, relocation costs of the 9 pups, in the photos attached and I am appealing for any donations that anyone can possibly afford as this has left a massive dent in the projects funds.
But without my intervention the pups would have definitely died and I couldn’t let that happen.
Losing Skye broke my heart and her pups had to be saved and given the happy ending that she never got! 💔

Today marks 2 years of Strays Of Belle Mare, East And West Coast Animal Welfare Project Mauritius
I would like to say a massive thank you to all of the 4 PAWS Team for all their hard work and compassion with our strays.
As well as Barbara Rebecca Elkaz who volunteers for me on the island, I now employ three feeders to feed the hotel and public beach strays in the east.
2 staff to care for our dogs and pups at our foster house in Bel Air.
Pravesh Reekoye and Prince Bushan are our paid rescuers.
Also Elo La and Lorena Gaus who foster our dogs that are adopted overseas.
PAWS Mauritius who we also work with who provide us with help with pups and cats and kittens.
We now work with 7 hotels on the east coast and are in talks with another hotel group.
Thank you to all of these hotels for being part of a more sustainable and compassionate solution to hotel strays.
Whilst our project is dedicated to beach strays we never refuse help if it’s within our power to strays in any area and in any situation.

We have sterilised hundreds of stray dogs and cats, organised between 150 and 200 adoptions overseas with tourists.
Feed between 60 to 80 dogs a day.
Vaccinated, snap tested and given vet care to numerous strays.
I personally funded the project myself for the first 18 months but with the expansion of the project and ever increasing amount of strays needing our help, I now have a Go Fund Me to help raise funds towards the costs.

https://gofund.me/b3f639aa

Thank you to every single person who donates, supports us and contacts us to help.
You have all played your part in making this project a great success.

Meet Leo! 💙
Although he was in Triolet which is not our area, when I saw his post I had to help!
Leo is around 6 years old and and was an owned dog!
However when his owners left the island they left him behind on the streets to fend for himself! 🤬
This sadly happens far too often and many previously owned family pets are discarded like the other rubbish they leave behind!!

Thank you to Coco and her son who saw this boy and posted on a WhatsApp group where I saw him and just had to help!

Although my Animal Welfare Project is based in Belle Mare in the east of Mauritius, I will help a dog in need wherever they are!

Thank you to Lorena Gaus for fostering Leo and Joanne Morris for her support with him too!

If anyone would like to donate towards Leo’s treatment, foster and travel to the U.K. once he is is well enough, the details are below.

22/03/2024

For those of you that are new to our group and for those of you that don’t know the story, I would like to introduce myself.
My name is Lisa and my organisation is in the U.K.
I have been helping the stray dogs and cats from Mauritius for 7 years and have found homes for over 1200 overseas in this time.
I started my journey with the Mauritian strays back in 2017 when I adopted my first Maurichien (Pepper) from the Ambre Hotel beach in Belle Mare and then a further two more (Poukie and Patch) from the streets to join my English pack of 5 already in the U.K.
The dogs of the Belle Mare and East coast region have always had a special place in my heart as this is where my journey started.
In June 2022 due to the overwhelming rescue crisis in the UK i decided to stop rehoming and instead concentrate on caring for the strays on the island through an Animal Welfare Project.
This is when Strays Of Belle Mare, East And West Coast Animal Welfare Project Mauritius was launched!
I coordinate and personally fund the Project from the UK, with the help of my friend, colleague and volunteer Barbara Elkaz who coordinates in Mauritius.
We work with a team of paid rescuers who help us to look after the resident packs at several hotels and public beaches in Belle Mare, Palmar and Trou D’Eau Do**he.
I employ 3 local people to feed the strays daily in these areas and we are the only organisation that pays to do this.
We currently feed around 20 hotel beach strays and between 40 to 50 public beach strays.
We run a monthly sponsorship scheme for the strays to help towards their feeding and veterinary care.
(Please contact us for details on how you can get involved in this if you would like to)
There is also a Go Fund Me page for one off donations towards the large running costs of the project. (Link at the end)

I also now rent a house in Bel Air where I employ someone to care for the 5 adult dogs and 11 pups we have there currently.

In the last 2 years of the project we have organised over 100 adoptions overseas for the dogs that tourists have met during their holiday.
Sterilised several hundred stray dogs and cats and helped many that were sick and injured with veterinary care.
As part of Catch-Neuter-Release, the strays are sterilised, vaccinated and released back to the beach where they are fed daily and vet treated when needed.

Tourists that fall in love with the strays that they meet whilst on holiday and want to bring them to the UK, Europe and the wider world can be organised.
This includes the organisation of the initial rescue, finding fosters on the island whilst having all the necessary vaccinations etc, the flight and crate from Mauritius to UK, Gatwick and onward travel by road to your home with a DEFRA type 2 approved pet transporter, all the necessary paperwork and customs.

The situation in Mauritius is totally overwhelming with literally hundreds of thousands of strays!
Mass sterilisation really is the only answer to the long term solution and I support the Catch Neuter and Release policy that we hope the government will implement in the near future.
In the meantime there are many wonderful NGO’s and rescuers on the island involved in sterilisation days in the community which I also support with my own days when possible.
Very occasionally there are special cases from our project that have no solution on the island and will come to the UK into foster to be assessed before adoption.
These dogs and cats can be found on our website.

My main non profit organisation is 4 Paws Rescue & Relocation International CIC
However, this is my voluntary work as I have a full time family business, children, grandchildren and 7 dogs.
Barbara Rebecca Elkaz also has a full time job, a family and 12 dogs at home.
So please be patient with us if we cannot answer your messages or calls immediately but rest assured we will get back to you asap.

If you see a sick or injured dog or cat that needs help or that you are interested in adopting or helping in any way then please get in touch with us on WhatsApp, email or the contact section on our website
