A seemingly simple video of retrieving a dumbbell, 2 weeks ago Keira wouldn't entertain even holding it for a second.

Lots of short sessions were needed for her to just learn to hold the article whilst sitting still without spitting it out.

Then she refused to actually pick the article up from the ground so the past few days I've had to make her really think about what she needs to do with it in order to get her reward.

Want to know more about how to teach your dog a new skill?

These 4 dogs have really been making great progress outside. Today's lesson was more about giving them something else to do as well as working on some recall. Searching for food hidden on the tree.

Ok, so XL bullies are highlighted right now. You may think my first go to opinion would be one of 'banning them is rediculous and unfair'

I'm afraid that's not my opinion.

I am a bit sick of hearing people say 'its all how you raise them' or 'theres no such thing as bad dogs, just bad owners' this couldn't be further from reality.

What's happened with this breed, is some irresponsible breeders have created lines which are deliberately more aggressive by nature. I'm sure these dogs were never really meant to end up in normal family households, but they have.

You have to ask why have they felt the need to breed such traits into a dog in the first place?

A breeder stated on LBC that his clients were drug dealers. It doesn't take much thinking to understand why they wouldn't want a friendly dog guarding their assets.

Anyway, even taking the conversation away from a specific breed, I feel there is a massive void in a lot of dogs daily lives and not many dogs have much of a purpose anymore other than just the household pet. Now that would be ok if you get yourself a low energy, lower drive dog, or a breed that was never bred to use its power to get what it wants. (Even then I still see dogs showing adverse symptomatic behaviour through lack of understanding and fulfillment)

Couple that with people's general understanding of dogs (they really aren't your substitute child or your nan coming back into your life through your dog) and so much conflicting advice on the best training methods etc you really can end up with a bit of a mess of a dog. And no just loving your dog doesn't create a well mannered creature.

Now mix in power and a genetic trait in a specific dog (doesn't even have to be just the XL bully) this is when you can potentially end up with a disaster on your hands.

The truth is, if a small dog came at you with the same intent as a large powerful dog, whilst it might hurt and cause you some damage, it's highly unlikely to leave you with life changing injuries nor is it likely to cause you death. You would also likely be able to quickly stop the dog physically.

People underestimate the power a large dog with intent to do you or another living being harm actually has. You won't stop it.

Now do I think banning is the right course of action? No

Do I think banning will stop sh*tty breeding? No

Do I think that specific people only should own specific dogs? Yes and they should prove what there intention is with the dog.

I don't really know what the answer is right now. We should be looking at getting to the root cause of the issue and banning the breed is just treating the symptom. I mean pitbulls have been banned for long enough for there not to be any here in the UK, but they are still around so that didn't work.

This is not a good time for any bullbreed owner as some people will unfortunately look at them all as the same.

💯 nobodies journey is straight forward, if you aren't hitting brick walls or want to shed a few tears at times then you are probably avoiding some issues or happy allowing your dog to do only what makes it happy.

You never stop learning when working with dogs, if you think you know everything then you're probably being a bit naive, it's like a bottomless pit but the rewards going in with your eyes wide open are immense!

An unplanned rollercoaster isn’t always a bad thing!

PLEASE!!! No matter how well trained you think your dog is, don't walk them on the roadside with no lead. Today I witnessed a french bulldog off lead on a very busy stretch of road at Rayleigh Weir run into the road and get hit by a car. Not sure what injuries she had as she was in shock but couldn't use her back legs.

The dog was taken straight to the vets by another lovely man that stopped as well.

If anyone has any updates it would be nice to know the outcome.
