It’s that time of year again where we start to see an influx of matted dogs 🙈

Matting is painful condition that can lead to other health concerns such as infections or skin irritations and can also mask other health issues or parasites. Mats cut off the air flow in your dog's hair and can trap moisture, which can cause irritation and sores on your dog. Even mild matting can be painful, but in severe cases, matting can cut off circulation to your dog's skin and cause hematomas.

If the matting on your dog is severe, the safest and most humane way to remove the mats would be to clip the hair short. The length of his hair will depend on how tight the mats are. We must be able to get the blade under the mat right against the skin to remove them.

If you suspect your dog is becoming matted please get them booked in as soon as possible. This will eliminate any further discomfort for your dog and hopefully give us the opportunity to provide you with the groom you want and that is best for your dog before it gets to out of control.

Once the matting issue has been resolved it is important to get into a brushing routine with your dog to avoid any future matting. The guide below gives a good representation of the high friction and most commonly matted areas that always need extra attention.

We always strive to be able to provide our customers with the groom they want but will always put the needs of the dogs first. We don’t enjoy having to clip matting off dogs as we know how painful it can be so we would much rather work with our customers to get into a good grooming routine to avoid this and keep everyone happy 😁
