🐱Hyperthyroid Clinic🐱

What is hyperthyroidism?

Cats have two thyroid glands in their neck that are vital in regulating the body's metabolic rate. Hyperthyroidism is characterised by the overproduction of thyroid hormone, resulting in an increase in metabolic rate (over-activity in the thyroid glands).

The most common clinical signs of hyperthyroidism in cats include:
🐾Increased appetite
🐾Increased drinking
🐾Progressive weight loss

The clinic is a 30minute appointment with one of our nurses where they will run the basic checks on your pet to then decide whether they need referred to one of our vets for further tests. If tests are required they will be charged at a discounted price!

Our new hyperthyroid clinic for cats is available between the 2nd September to the 31st October.

☎️Contact the practice on 016973 42174 to book your free consultation today!

💉August is National Immunisation Awareness Month💉

Immunisations, better known as vaccines, are an important part of maintaining our pets health. When did your dog or cat last have their vaccinations?

This is Halloumi, she came in for her kitten vaccines. Halloumi had Tricat and FeLV.🐱

Tricat covers her for two common respiratory viruses and a virus that can cause serious diarrhoea.

FeLV is an additional non-core vaccine that protects against Feline Leukaemia Virus. This is a life limiting virus that cats can catch from close contact with infected cats. We strongly recommend this vaccine for cats that go into catteries or outdoors as they may be in close contact with others.

If you want to update your vaccines or check what your pet is protected against, give us a call on 016973 42174 or make an appointment today.🩺

🐶Monty's Story🐶

Monty came to us in March for a consultation with one of our vet's as he had a 'tragic expression' and skin irritations.

Our vet Sam ran some tests to then find out that Monty’s T4 levels were low which indicated something was wrong with his thyroid. Sam opted to send these bloods to our lab for further testing which came back that he was hypothyroid!🩺

Due to finding this out we got him started on thyroid medication to try and bring his levels back to normal.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism in dogs include:
• Weight gain
• Skin Infections
• Excessive tiredness💤
• Dullness or depression ('tragic expression')

Before diagnosis Monty struggled with all of these, but after finding the correct dose of medication he is now a different dog and managed to lose 6kg between March and July and has now hit his target weight of 35kg!🎉

Look at this handsome boy from before and after! His pawrents say he has a new lease of life!🐾

We are all so proud of you Monty!💙

It’s the time of year when adders are out and about. Occasionally we see dogs who have been bitten by adders. 🐍

If your dog is bitten by an adder or you suspect it has been, follow these steps:
1. Move yourself and your dogs away from the area
2. Ring the vets to let us know you are on your way
3. Keep the dog as calm as possible, try to limit movement. This can help to stop the venom spreading
4. If your dog is small enough, carry it (Avoid this if it will cause panic)
5. Do NOT suck or squeeze the area.

Meet Bennet 🐶🐾.

Bennet and his friend were bitten by the SAME adder last summer. The owner brought them in straight away. They were given IV fluids, anti-inflammatory medications and anti-venom. They responded really well and were able to go home the next morning (with slightly bigger noses)😁.

Always put your dogs on a lead if possible. This helps avoid bites as your footsteps will scare adders away, while dog footsteps alone are much less likely to! 👣💉🩺
