This was my Dad back in the day 🥰

In 1959, the rag and bone man was a regular presence on the streets of London, calling out as he made his rounds with a horse-drawn cart. These men offered a vital service, collecting old clothes, scrap metal, and unwanted household items in exchange for a few pennies or modest trade. Their arrival was often marked by the clip-clop of hooves and the rhythmic cry of "rag and bone!"—a sound deeply woven into the fabric of working-class London life. They were not just collectors but community fixtures, part of the city’s everyday rhythm.

By the 1980s, the rag and bone trade had adapted to the times. The iconic horse and cart gave way to battered vans and small trucks, but the mission remained largely the same: to salvage and repurpose what others no longer needed. Although their presence had diminished, they still held a place in the hearts of many Londoners, recalling a period when reuse and resourcefulness were necessities, and the streets held a sense of communal familiarity.

Today, the rag and bone man is a fading figure, edged out by organized waste collection and the rise of charity shops. Yet every so often, a lone truck might trundle through a quiet street, echoing a tradition that once shaped city life. In these fleeting moments, Londoners are reminded of a time when value was found in the discarded, and a man with a cart and a keen eye could turn yesterday’s rubbish into tomorrow’s resource.
