🐾 National Feral Cat Day – 16 October 2025 🐾
Today, we observe National Feral Cat Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about feral cats and their unique needs. Not all cats can become domestic pets—feral cats are wild, independent, and fearful of humans, making traditional pet life unsuitable for them.
🐱 What Is a Feral Cat?
Feral cats are independent and self-sufficient, often living in colonies near food and shelter. They are not socialized to humans and usually avoid contact. Unlike stray cats, adult ferals are unlikely to become domesticated pets.
🛠️ How Can I Care for a Feral Cat?
🟣Feral cats still need care. Colonies can grow quickly, so neutering and returning cats prevents continual breeding.
🟣Monitor them in winter, and if a feral cat appears sick or injured, they can be trapped and taken to a vet.
🟣Removing feral cats isn’t a long-term solution; new cats may move into the area.
🩺 How Can Cats Protection Help?
The best approach is Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR): neuter all ferals in a colony quickly to reduce population and improve health. Cats Protection runs TNR schemes for feral cats to help limit disease.
📞 For more information on feral neutering, call the Cats Protection helpline: 03000 12 12 12, option 2 (lines open 9.30am–1pm).
Let’s support our feral feline friends and raise awareness about the best ways to help them thrive.
