During thunderstorms and lightning please ensure your well loved pet has a safe space to go to if they get anxious.

This could be a closet/wardrobe they feel safe in or if they have s crate thst they feel safe int hey can go there too!

The more you react about these things the more your animals will react too! This is not to say that their anxiousness should be dismissed but think carefully about how you react as well!

The heat is taking a toll on everybody, please remember if your struggling your dogs are too!

Walk them early in the morning or late in the evening, please please do not take them out midday as this is when it’s the hottest.

Dogs can not cool down like we can they can’t take off layers of clothes or drink a cold beer etc to cool down, remember this when your thinking of taking them out in the heatwave.

Below is a photo including advice on how to look after your pet in this weather.

Train your pet to what you want them to do, focus on the positive behaviours that you want, not the negative ones you do not want.

Separation anxiety since the end of lockdown has been a real problem for our furry friends. Going from spending all day everyday with their humans to being left alone most of the day is a dramatic change for anyone.

It takes time and patience but you can work on it and help your dog through this difficult period, it just takes time.

There are many reasons aversive training methods such as prong collars and electric shock collars can cause more problems then fix them.

Don’t you want your dog to listen to you because they want to? Not because they are afraid of what will happen if they don’t?

Positive reinforcement means your dog is doing the tasks you want them to do because they want to do them as well! And helps strengthen your bond.

I love seeing happy dogs playing and off a lead, but not all dogs are friendly and get along with others.

It is important to make sure you and your dog are safe when out and about. You need to be your dogs voice, recognise their behaviours and when they’re uncomfortable which is what I can help with.

Let’s all make sure our dogs are happy and feel safe together!

Keeping your dog mentally stimulated is just as important as physical exercise, just like us they can get bored and then play up.

Try using toys that make them think like maze toys or kongs with frozen peanut butter in or something they love, they will have to work for it and it will keep them busy.

It’s important to consider a dogs breed when you look at their behaviour. What were they bred for? How does this impact their behaviours and the way they learn?

When you know this it makes a bit more sense as to why they do what they do.

For example greyhounds are bred to chase and run so if they see a small animal moving they are going to go for it. You can’t expect them to change who they are overnight it takes time and patience which is key!

It is so important to respect your dogs boundaries, you are your dogs voice. If you know they get anxious round other dogs or people, that needs to be communicated to those around you. A helpful piece of equipment for this is the colour code m leads/collars/harnesses, examples of this will be in the pictures below.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with pebbles throughout the week. She’s a Labrador/red setter/greyhound and staffie mix. As I’m sure you can by her breeds she’s very high energy and needs a lot of exercise.

We have been working on lead pulling and keeping her calm when at home. The photo on the left is when I was allowing her a longer lead in order to sniff and explore.

She still has a bit to go but I can see the progress already!

Training isn’t just about training the dog, it’s also about training the owner on how to communicate with their pet. It takes time and effort but at the end it’s worth it!

If you struggle with having control of your dog when on a walk, using a double lead can be a great way to obtain it.

Attach one half of the lead to the collar and the other to a harness and you will have an extra helping hand in controlling your pet.

Training is important for dogs not only does it give them mental enrichment and stimulation it keeps them healthy physically!

I am now taking appointments please message me for more information.

A head collar like this can be so helpful in teaching your dog not to pull when on a lead. It may look scary but it is harmless and not painful at all, they can still drink and eat with it on! Don’t be afraid to use tools like this to help you have a happy and easy walk with your furry friend.
