FREE Heat Injury in Working Dogs Webinar from Veterinary Tactical Group

How hot is too hot? When is it too hot to work a dog? What body temperature is too hot for a dog? How long should work-rest cycles actually be to prevent heat injury? What is the best way to cool a dog if they seem overheated? These are all great questions, but difficult to answer for all dogs. In the past few years, research and new insights into heat injury in working dogs has given a new way to think about how to prevent and treat heat injury in working dogs. Join Janice Baker, DVM, DACVPM, expert on occupational hazards in working dogs, for this interactive webinar to discuss these questions, and learn key ways to recognize and mitigate thermal stress in the elite canine athlete.
Our webinar has been viewed 700 times since we decided to make it no-cost to view. That's at least 700 working dogs that are working more safely in hot conditions; 700 canine handlers, veterinary and EMS personnel who are that much more prepared to allow dogs to work at their top potential while keeping them safe from life-threatening heat injury.
You can find the no-cost webinar here:

DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN'T SPREAD COLD WATER WITH AN OVERHEATED DOG OR PUT A WET TOWEL ON ITS BACK? !! ️.
HERE'S THE INSTRUCTION OF WHAT YOU SHOULD DO..

Animal lovers, never make the mistake of pouring cold water overheated dog or putting a wet towel on its back. You will see the opposite effect.

Due to cold, the veins contract and due to high temperatures (above 42 degrees), the proteins in the blood collide, causing the blood to become thick and tight.

Due to the combination of these two factors, blood stops entering the heart and organs fail one by one due to lack of oxygen.
The result is a very slow but very painful death.

If you try to help an overheated dog in this way, it will die anyway.

First give him lukewarm water to drink, then cool his feet and chest/belly with a wet towel.
Then put the dog in the shade on a wet towel!!!

Sharing is highly desirable because time and time again we see footage of overheated dogs exiting a car with water spilled on their backs.

JUST A REMINDER, TO ALL DOG OWNERS.

⚠️🚙⚠️ Despite the warnings, hundreds of dogs in the UK die every year after being left in a hot car. Someone you know may need to read this very important message. ⚠️🚙⚠️

SIX MINUTES is all it takes for a dog to overheat in a hot car.

Your dog could suffer serious injury or die in a matter of minutes if left alone in a car.

• The temperature inside a closed vehicle left in the sun can double within 12 minutes.

• At least 75% of the temperature increase in a closed vehicle occurs within 5 minutes of closing the vehicle, and at least 89% of the temperature increase occurs within 15 minutes of closing the vehicle.

• Temperatures exceeding 104˚ F can lead to death or serious injury for the occupants.

• Temperatures in a closed vehicle sitting in the hot sun can reach 160˚F and above. An animal will suffer immeasurably and may die before the temperature reaches 150˚F.

• Even when parked in the shade, the vehicle temperatures can exceed 104˚C.

• Leaving windows down more than 2 inches on an unattended vehicle will not prevent a car from reaching extreme temperatures.

• Even if the animal is revived, they can die due to severe internal organ damage.

Your dog trusts you to have their best interest at heart ALWAYS.
Please don’t risk their safety.

If you are not taking your dog inside your destination with you, PLEASE leave them at home where they are comfortable and safe.

I can not stress this enough!!! This weekend DO NOT WALK YOUR DOG infact... they can live not walking but they will die in a split second walking out in that heat....... be sure to have lemon juice and follow the advice I put on here next....

What to do it your dog over heats....👇👇

If your dogs are overheating it is imperative that you act quickly. Initially stand them in a bath of cool water NOT COLD!!!! and pour water especially around their neck, you need to cool the blood going to the brain as in severe cases of overheating there is a risk of brain damage from hot blood going to the brain. (Don't turn the hose pipe on them, it may panic them and make them worse & and the first lot of water sat in the hose could be boiling hot water!!) Extreme cold water can send them in to shock, so make sure it's just cool water.

Place ice under their tail (just inside their bottom if you can), keep pouring cool water over them and keep calm, if you panic your dog will panic.
Your dog will go very pale as the circulation system struggles to cope.

Try get them in the bath & Keep going with the water - don't take them out of the bath until the breathing has calmed down, talk calmly to your dog - you will be soaked, your bathroom will be soaked, but you will save their life!!!!!!!!!

Once the breathing is calmer, remove them from the bath but don't dry them, they will still be very pale (inside mouth, gums and inner eyes).

Let them wander but don't make a fuss of them, your fussing may make them anxious and it could start over again. Still don't force them to drink, but make up a rehydration mix ( oralade Gi or Hydrate + for example you can buy this from amazon) and place it in a bowl for them to drink from if they wants to.

Always have a bottle of lemon juice to hand, carry one in your bag on days out as this will be a life saver and cut the phlem from the back of the throat which is what stops the foaming during heat stroke and helps them breath. Sq**rt it into the side of the mouth not straight down as you can end up with your dog aspirating.

Remember now the sun is coming be double weary of your squishy faces, lots of water bowls down, walk in the cool mornings or the cooler evenings if the heat is hot on you it's 10 x that on your dog, the path is burning your feet it's burning their feet.

IT WILL NOT KILL YOUR DOG NOT HAVING A WALK, BUT YOU COULD KILL THEM BY WALKING THEM.
PLEASE KEEP THEM IN AND COOL.☺️
