Meet Zaya 🐾
We’re thrilled to have welcomed another big cat at the zoo this week!
Zaya is a one-year-old female snow leopard from The Big Cat Sanctuary, and she’s already settling well after arriving on Thursday 27 February.
You might notice Zaya has a bit of discolouration in her eye when you visit. In January 2024, she underwent an eye operation due to an infection. Thanks to specialist vets at The Big Cat Sanctuary, her eye was successfully treated, and she doesn’t let it slow her down!
We can't wait for you all to meet Zaya but she is still young and adjusting to her new surroundings so please be mindful when you come and see her. 💚

✨George, Vet Nurse, delivered a fantastic talk on faecal egg counts and how they help us monitor and improve the health of our animals.
📢Lauren, Vet Nurse, was elected to the BVZS Council, giving her a direct role in shaping British policy and supporting veterinary professionals caring for zoo, wildlife, and exotic species.
A huge congratulations to our dedicated team for their outstanding work in zoological and wildlife medicine.

We're delighted Amy Denny, our Primates and Small Mammals Team Leader has been announced as the first nomination for BIAZA's Women of the Year!
Amy has worked at Marwell since 2016 and has been a driving force in advancing animal training for animal welfare purposes, amongst other things. Click on BIAZA's post below and show your support for Amy in the comments.💚
Introducing...the first nominee of BIAZA Woman of the Year, Amy Denny 🙌🥳
Amy is the Primate and Small Mammal Team Leader at Marwell Wildlife having joined the Zoo back in 2016 🐒
She has played a huge role advancing animal welfare not only at Marwell Zoo, but in the wider BIAZA community.
🗒️For example, Amy worked towards the implementation of the Animal Welfare Assessment Grid, a crucial step in advancing animal welfare standards.
🩺She has also been a driving force in advancing animal training for veterinary and husbandry purposes. Notably, she has facilitated numerous veterinary interventions without manual handling, including the annual Yersinia vaccinations for 28 animals across 2 days.
Amy is committed to continuous learning and actively shares her knowledge and experiences with the team, the zoo, and the wider zoo community. Amy also holds several key positions, including Lead Chair of the BIAZA Primate Sub-Group, EEP Coordinator for Red-handed tamarins, and Species Committee Member for both Invasive marmosets and Siamangs.
In her own time, Amy has supported the Mountain Marmosets Conservation Programme since 2019 as a ‘Creative Conservationist’, by designing merchandise for the charity which receives 100% of the profit and additional fundraising 🎨
Her nominators wrote:
“Amy's contributions to Marwell Zoo and the wider BIAZA community have been invaluable. Her innovative approaches, commitment to continuous improvement, and dedication to animal welfare have made a significant impact, benefiting both the animals and the people who care for them.
Her enthusiasm and passion for the care and welfare of animals is infectious.”
Amy is the first of several inspirational nominees we'll be sharing on our social media. Watch this space for more!

International Love Your Pet Day 💞🐾
Every day, our keepers care for the incredible species here at the zoo, but when their shifts end, many head home to their own beloved pets!
Carrie, Carnivore Team Leader, looks after some of the world's most captivating predators, but at home, she is greeted by two dogs, Ziggy and Finley and three cats, Indy, Marble and Milla. Interestingly, Carrie found Milla and her kittens in the woodland next to the zoo while walking home one afternoon and chose to name little Milla after the zoo’s resident Amur tiger at the time!
Amy, Primates and Small Mammals Team Leader, shares her home with her adorable rescue frug (French bulldog x pug), Beans. Beans is five years old and has a very stubborn personality. Amy has no issues training gibbons to receive veterinary care and tamarins to weigh themselves, but she simply cannot train Beans!
Amanda, Primates and Small Mammals Keeper, has two very loved rescue cats! Ben, a three-legged cat with half an ear missing, who is full of energy and loves climbing the ladder to her daughter’s loft bed. His companion, Lilly, a beautiful tabby who prefers her own company.
Nicole, Hoofstock Keeper, spends her days caring for Marwell’s incredible hoofstock species, and when she gets home, she’s greeted by her dog, Lola, wagging her tail at the door. Nicole even trains Lola in various ways to enhance her welfare, just as she does with the animals at Marwell.
How are you celebrating ? Share your furry, feathered, or scaly friends with us in the comments! 🥰

Marwell’s annual stocktake celebrates record births and conservation successes 🐌🌏
Learn more: bit.ly/4hSD5Sv
We’ve once again completed our annual animal audit, counting more than 500 animals across 145 species! Although our keepers are fully aware of the number of animals they care for daily, the zoo’s licence legally requires an official count to take place each year.
This year’s count highlights a series of remarkable births and new arrivals, including a rare okapi calf, a critically endangered cotton-top tamarin baby, and a colony of Humboldt penguins.

We’re delighted to share our first ever coppery titi monkey has been born here at Marwell. Born to first-time parents Taco and Mr Titi, keepers say the new arrival is thriving and currently being carried by its father between feed times. We give our animals the freedom to choose where they spend time within their habitat so if you can’t see our new arrival on the first attempt, we recommend making time to pop back later in the day when they may have moved. Coppery titi monkeys are monogamous, with males taking on primary caregiving responsibilities shortly after birth. When coppery titi monkeys rest or sleep, they show their love by wrapping their long tails together in a special move called “tail twining.” #monkey #conservation #primates

Just by visiting Marwell Zoo (owned and run by conservation charity Marwell Wildlife) you’ll be making a big contribution to our projects to conserve species and habitats both in Hampshire and around the world.
Marwell Zoological Park was opened to the public by John Knowles in 1972. Established as a conservation and breeding centre, the park planned to give visitors the opportunity to see rare and interesting animals in a unique setting. Back then, the park was divided into four zones: Eurasia, America, Africa and Australia. In 1978 Marwell Zoo came under the ownership of a charitable trust and since then, the zoo has come a long way. Gradually adding to its collection and welcoming the arrivals and births of a number of endangered species, Marwell has always been dedicated to conservation and breeding efforts. We’ve even had a few Royal visits!
Today, Marwell’s 140-acre park is home to an incredible range of exotic and endangered species, in beautiful, landscaped surroundings. Guests can wander into the bush in the company of wallabies; step into Africa for an encounter with giraffes; and even come face-to-face with Rica, the Linne’s two-toed sloth, in the magnificent Tropical House. ‘Energy for Life’ Tropical House opened in 2018 and is Marwell’s biggest exhibit to date. Hot on the heels of Wild Explorers, this innovative and sustainable exhibit marks the second phase of a £17million investment programme at Marwell over the next decade, creating improved habitats for animals and more immersive experiences for guests. Spanning two levels with fantastic vantage points, guests can experience face-to-face encounters with a diversity of wildlife and exotic plants in a tropical climate, while learning about the flow of energy through life.
If you’re loopy for lemurs, be sure to look out for Lemur Loop – A walkthrough exhibit including several species of lemurs, a great way to immerse yourself in their exciting environment. Guests can see the loveable lemur troop through the indoor viewing area in the Evolution Hub and can walk alongside the adorable lemurs in their outdoor walkthrough area.
Enjoy a range of daily animal talks and feeds; and with five adventure playgrounds, a rail train, free road train, and two indoor picnic areas – there’s plenty for the whole family to enjoy.
