Valentine’s Day isn’t just for roses and romantic dinners - our furry friends deserve a little extra love too! Whether it’s a new toy, their favourite treat, or a belly rub marathon, they’ll adore being spoiled.

🍫 Reminder from us: Keep chocolates well out of paw’s reach (no matter how persuasive those puppy eyes are), since they’re toxic for pets, and make sure any flowers you bring home are pet safe.

Are you pampering your pet this Valentine’s Day? Show us in the comments below! 🐶🐱💕

We get it. No one loves picking up after their dog, but did you know that you’re preventing diseases if you do it?

Dog poo can carry parasites like Toxocara, which can harm other animals, and even people.

Here are some helpful tips:

🛍️ Always carry poo bags with you and keep extras in your pocket, bag, or coat. You’ll thank yourself later!

🗑️ Make sure to bin it afterwards. Don’t leave it bagged and abandoned.

Helping to keep our green spaces clean is a small step that makes a big difference for our community! No one wants to dodge landmines on their morning walk. 💩

Different kinds of seizures can lead to different signs, but if your pet is having a seizure, they might:

🧠 Have trouble walking and become unsteady

🧠 Collapse and fall to the ground

🧠 Foam from the mouth and drool

🧠 Lose consciousness

🧠 Urinate or defecate because they lose control of body functions

🧠 Shake, twitch and kick their legs

We know this is a stressful situation, but try to remain as calm as possible, make sure there’s nothing around them where they can hurt themselves, film the episode if you can, and get in touch with us.

If your pet has a seizure that lasts longer than a few minutes, or has several seizures in a row, this is an emergency and you need to bring them in right away! 🚑

Did you know that coughing is a protective response that helps keep the airway clear? 🤔

That’s why dogs, like humans, cough if they accidentally choke on something they’ve eaten, and many respiratory infections can also lead to coughing due to airway inflammation.

But, sometimes, coughing can mean there is a problem in a different organ – the heart! 🫀

If your dog has a heart problem, their blood isn’t circulating well, which causes the blood vessels to leak. This fluid often builds up in the lungs, which can happen over time or very quickly, resulting in breathing difficulties and coughing.

As there are so many causes that can lead to coughing, it’s important to bring your dog to the practice so we can investigate. 🔎

We understand the thought of surgery might feel a bit daunting, but spaying and neutering isn’t just about avoiding surprise litters - it’s also about giving your pet a chance to lead a healthier life.

Here are our top reasons to recommend spaying and neutering:

👉 Neutered males are less likely to roam and have no risk of developing testicular tumours.

👉 Spayed females have a reduced risk of developing certain tumours and serious health conditions, such as womb infection (pyometra).

If you have questions or concerns, give us a call. We’re always happy to discuss what’s best for you and your pet. 🩺🐾

Cats are commonly depicted in cartoons as happily drinking milk from a bowl. But should you really feed your cat milk? 🥛

Just like us, when cats are born, they have the necessary enzyme (lactase) to break down lactose (the sugar found in milk) and be able to digest it, but as they get older, many lose the ability to produce this enzyme. This means that they can’t digest dairy products properly and are, therefore, lactose intolerant.

Additionally, cats don’t really need milk to thrive; constant access to fresh water and a balanced diet are enough to fulfil their nutritional needs.

Canine parvovirus enteritis is commonly known as a life-threatening illness in puppies, as their immune system is still immature and they cannot be vaccinated yet.

It’s highly contagious, and transmission occurs mainly through contact with the faeces of infected dogs.

Symptoms include:

👉 Diarrhoea with blood and a strong smell

👉 Reduced appetite and vomiting

👉 High fever

👉 Lethargy

This disease is one of the reasons why it’s so important to be careful with puppies who aren’t fully vaccinated by preventing interactions with dogs of unknown vaccination status! If you take your puppy outside, always carry them to prevent contact with other dogs or contaminated surfaces.

Since this is a very aggressive illness, if you spot these signs in your puppy, bring them in right away. Successful treatment includes intensive supportive care that needs to be started as soon as possible to give them the best chance of recovery.

We know that cute dogs are irresistible and that, as animal lovers, you want to pet every dog you see on the street, but be sure to always ask the owner first! If given permission, remember that this dog doesn’t know you, so be respectful of their body language. 🐕

Have you ever wondered why cats meow? 😺

Meowing is the main way cats have to communicate with us. Kittens meow to let their mother know their needs, but once they get older, cats no longer meow to other cats. They continue to meow to us to communicate their wants and needs. It’s their way of saying hello, asking for things (food or treats or water), asking us to get in or out of a room, and telling us when something is wrong.

Although some cats meow very rarely (or never), others have a lot to say! 😅 Is your cat quiet or chatty? Tell us in the comments below! 👇
