⚠️ Weather Warning ⚠️
With winds picking up in our area, it’s important to keep your pets safe
Small Animals 🐇
Move rabbits, guinea pigs and other outdoor pets inside or into a car-free garage. If this isn’t possible – move runs and hutches to the most sheltered area in the garden and make sure they have plenty of bedding. Hutches and runs can be covered by blankets and tarpaulins to keep them dry and warm.
Dogs 🐕
Before letting your dog out in the garden, please check that no fence has been damaged (including tomorrow). If you want to go out for a walk, check weather apps and go when it is as quiet as possible and keep your dog warm and dry in a coat, especially if they are elderly. It is also probably wise to keep them on the lead in case they get spooked by the wind.
Cats 🐈
Most cats will be sensible in this kind of weather and curl up indoors until it is all over. If you think they might try to escape, then it is best to lock the cat flap, keep windows and doors closed to ensure they stay inside. If your cat is crying to get out, distract them with short play sessions that end with a treat. Cats spend lots of their time exploring their surroundings, but during bad weather, it’s best to keep them inside. If your cat isn’t at home when the storm starts, make sure that they can enter via a window or cat flap so they can shelter from the weather. Please also check outbuildings and under cars for cats taking shelter.
Birds 🦜
Make sure all birds are safe in aviaries. Even if it means bringing birds into your home instead.
Horses 🐴
If your stables are sturdy and your horses are reasonably settled despite the winds, then they may be better off inside. If your stables are creaking or you can see the structure moving, then they may be better off outside. If turned out many horses will be more comfortable in a rug as there will be a very high wind chill.
