An old man meets a young man who asks:
“Do you remember me?”
And the old man says no. Then the young man tells him he was his student, And the teacher asks:
“What do you do, what do you do in life?”
The young man answers:
“Well, I became a teacher.”
“ah, how good, like me?” Asks the old man.
“Well, yes. In fact, I became a teacher because you inspired me to be like you.”
The old man, curious, asks the young man at what time he decided to become a teacher. And the young man tells him the following story:
“One day, a friend of mine, also a student, came in with a nice new watch, and I decided I wanted it.
I stole it, I took it out of his pocket.
Shortly after, my friend noticed the his watch was missing and immediately complained to our teacher, who was you.
Then you addressed the class saying, ‘This student’s watch was stolen during classes today. Whoever stole it, please return it.’
I didn’t give it back because I didn’t want to.
You closed the door and told us all to stand up and form a circle.
You were going to search our pockets one by one until the watch was found.
However, you told us to close our eyes, because you would only look for his watch if we all had our eyes closed.
We did as instructed.
You went from pocket to pocket, and when you went through my pocket, you found the watch and took it. You kept searching everyone’s pockets, and when you were done you said ‘open your eyes. We have the watch.’
You didn’t tell on me and you never mentioned the episode. You never said who stole the watch either. That day you saved my dignity forever. It was the most shameful day of my life.
But this is also the day I decided not to become a thief, a bad person, etc. You never said anything, nor did you even scold me or take me aside to give me a moral lesson.
I received your message clearly.
Thanks to you, I understood what a real educator needs to do.
Do you remember this episode, professor?
The old professor answered, ‘Yes, I remember the situation with the stolen watch, which I was looking for in everyone’s pocket. I didn’t remember you, because I also closed my eyes while looking.’
This is the essence of teaching:
If to correct you must humiliate; you don’t know how to teach “

Another fantastic day at Racingredd 😁
This morning 6 lovely dogs trailed around a local farmyard,in and out of buildings, searching enormous farm machinery to find their missing person.
This afternoon a different group of dogs searched the same areas for clove and gun oil odour.

Our dogs noses literally blow my mind! The way they eliminate the environmental odours including, slurry, dust, cattle, dust, vermin to list a few and still find a misper or target odour is amazing.

Keep an eye on this page for more Mantrailing and Scentwork workshop dates.

We’ve had a great time the past week at Racingredd. On Sunday Nicky and I ran the first Patchwork trial in this area,I hope the competitors enjoyed it as much as we both enjoyed judging.
On Tuesday at Scentwork we worked on a wall search, perimeter, tables & chairs. Boxes and bags with a difference, the odour was on the wall and floor not on the b&b.
The final search was a busy room (stable) the wheelbarrow handle was fairly simple but the dogs needed to work in between lots of stuff to find the second one on top of the compost bags.
So pleased I made time to work my own dogs, they were amazing. I love watching how their body language changes as they go to source.

Finally Hoopers and Agility on Wednesday and Thursday. The Hoopers course had lots of barells, which definitely caused some confused brains and loads of laughs.
Thank you to everyone who came along.
Have to say I LOVE my new Callieway baseless hoops 💙🩶 they are brilliant quality, light to move but sturdy enough to cope with East Anglian weather.

Residual IS a form of Source.

Residual is what happens when you remove a hide from an area. It's the odor molecules that transfer to the surface of the location where you placed the hide. Those odor molecules are the EXACT SAME kind of molecules that your dog has been trained to find. And essential oils are SO volatile, those molecules then start to release into the air and create a scent cone.

The scent cone created by residual smells THE SAME as the scent cone from a hide.

The ONLY difference between Residual and Source is that Source is INTENTIONAL and has a cotton Q-tip.

Residual is NOT cleared out by airing out the room.

The original scent cone from a hide will dissipate but you will STILL have odor transfer onto a surface.

Residual is accentuated if you use a plastic straw as your vessel because plastic absorbs odor.

Residual is accentuated if you re-use putty.

Residual is accentuated if you use AKC strength Qtips as the Qtips are literally saturated with oil. (Roughly 50x+ stronger than an NACSW Qtip)

Residual CANNOT be removed with vinegar. It just get covered and vinegar is an aversive.

Residual will be accentuated on surfaces that absorb odor like fabric, plastic, cardboard, leather, etc.

Residual CAN be moderately affected by the use of something like Zero Odor but PLEASE make sure that the area is dry before using the search area again.

If your dog is not alerting on Residual.... it's because you have affected your dog's odor threshold... meaning that your dog will only alert on a narrow range of odor concentration.... this is NOT necessarily a good thing.... it means that your dog may dismiss hides that are not consistent with their trained and reinforced concentration AND your dog may not react to hides set at a distance or with varying degree of inacessibility.

Residual is NOT a Training Issue. Residual is an ODOR HYGIENE Issue.
