Sometimes a horse just has muscles that are too deep or tight to get into, so I have to resort to the gun. Horses muscles are so big that no human can manually get to the depth that many need to release.

This incredible 9 year old showjumping mare, absolutely loved her gun treatment. The look on her face was priceless.

This horse is a show jumper. His owner has reported him not wanting to change readily behind and she’s been struggling to get him to really use himself into the corners on the flat.

He presented with incredibly tight gluteal, tensa fascia latea and biceps muscles specifically on the left. After some manual manipulation, I popped the electro therapy on for 15 mins. The releases he gave due to the deep stimulus was incredible.

This is not an injury he sustained, but is purely work related and using one side of his body more than the other, which is as common in horses as it is humans.

Home visits with Natasha for her knee. Tash tore her minuscus and ACL a few months ago at work. Today she had electrotherapy to help improve and stimulate the affected nerves, tissues and muscles around her knee in order to promote healing and increased blood flow and physical function.

We haven’t forgotten about Chablis, our other sponsored horse. Chablis has been having a winter break (complete with treatments which she now thinks is a complete spa day) as her mom decided it would be a great idea to have surgery on her knee. Chablis is going to start coming back into work slowly from next week as her mom is down to one crutch and is able to lunge her.

This lovely girl has also made the transition to barefoot over the winter after spending most of her 18 years in shoes. She is coping incredibly well and it has not affected her body in any way (as it often does when horses transition).

Alexandra says about herself and Stevie:

Horses have always been a passion of mine for many years. I am 16 years old and have been riding for over 8 years.
I like competing in show Jumping, working Hunter and working equitation.

Stevie is a 12 year old Irish Sport Horse X who is relatively new to the world of competing. We’re looking forward to a year of individual and team showjumping, working hunter / equitation and hopefully some grass roots evening.

After reviewing all the applications for this year’s sponsored horse and rider and seeing the absolute determination in one rider in particular, we have chosen.

This particular young lady and her horse meet all of our values and show such an aptitude for jumping and appreciation for each other.

It is my absolute pleasure to announce that Alexandra Woodward and Stevie will be flying the Essex Equitherapy banner high for 2024.

Welcome to the team!

To those of you who throw in the towel or who expect your youngsters or your older horses to be great from the get go…

Every horse (and human) moves at a different pace. Who cares if takes you 5 years to get from pole on the ground to 80cm or if it takes you 2 years to go up to 1.40m. Does it matter if you are competing prelim on a horse who someone else has ridden to elementary?
Move at the pace that is best for you and your horse. Don’t move at anyone else’s pace or think you should because someone else is doing it.

A few reasons that I haven’t been active or promoting my business….

I am being completely and utterly honest when I say these things and I know that is affects many others who have a small business that they have been trying to grow:

1. I’m sick of people booking and then cancelling because they found someone cheaper (cheaper does not mean better)
2. I’m over people wanting things for free
3. I try to fit appointments around my day job as I do not earn enough money as a massage therapist to work full time. This means that I am only able to work on weekends at the moment…if you cannot fit someone in at an exact time, you are ghosted
4. Enquiries…when you send one and I respond please just acknowledge it. Do not ignore the response. Say thank you. Then move on if it’s not what you want to hear
5. Humans…I have treated horses and told their humans that they need a break/another treatment/need to go back to basics/horse is very sore and they should consult a vet…so they don’t book another appointment and use other people until they get the answer they want or they don’t believe you and carry on working their horse
6. Referrals…I’ve treated people and horses and dogs for free and not one of those people has shared a post or given a referral…they carry on until they need another freebie…I’ve obliged. When I really shouldn’t have.
7. I’ve needed to take a step back and contemplate if I still want to do this and grow this into something that I know it can be. I’m passionate about helping animals and people. And I do want to help them be the best they can be with no pain.

Things I will not do because it would not be asked of anyone else…

1. Lower my prices because so and so can do it cheaper (my prices are cheap enough, much cheaper than they could be)
2. Offer mates rates
3. Tell you to keep running when you need a rest
4. Tell you to keep jumping your horse when he/she is broken
5. Lie to you to make you feel better

I’ve taken a long hard think about this and I do want to continue helping humans and horses and dogs. But if I’m going to do it, it will continue to be done in an ethical way. I will always be on the animal’s side.

Sponsored pair Natasha Danino and Chablis letting their hair down and having fun at a hunter trial this past weekend.

Natasha gives Chablis the winter off from show jumping and just lets her have fun and be a horse. She always comes back super refreshed and better than ever each Spring.

It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen such a sound and happy older horse and this is why they are a part of the Essex Equitherapy team. They are what we stand for.

Something that’s an absolute bug bear for me is when people advertise a 3 year old already backed or a 4 year old jumping 1.10 and say they have been brought on slowly and not rushed.

How can you say that when the scapula doesn’t even close until they are 5?

How many of these horses are still sound at 8?

How many older horses does one see for sale still happily jumping or even better, a 6 year old that hasn’t seen anything over 80cm.

4 year olds competing at elementary dressage…do you not realise just how hard that is on their bodies? It’s wrong. Just wrong.

I’ve been left with the remnants of horses like this. I pick up the pieces and put them back together and they are just broken time and time again.

I myself have a 12 year old that should be in his prime but sadly he’s showing so much wear and tear from being overworked as a youngster that I very much doubt he will still be comfortable into his late teens.

Look after your horses like they look after you.

Keep them happy, help them to stay sound.

Stop putting off that set of shoes because barefoot is cheaper or leaving them in shoes because someone told you to put them on a 3 year old.
Stop putting off that long hack where you just walk and talk about life.
Stop jumping them 3 times a week! Just stop it!
Stop forcing them into a frame instead of riding them from behind into a soft contact.
Stop schooling for hours because they didn’t do it right the first time. They are animals like us. They have good and bad days.

Start learning about their bodies and helping them work the best way they can.
Start feeding them less hard feeds and more forage.
Start going back to basics and strip everything back when it goes wrong instead of using gadgets.
Start loving them more.

At the very least get them treated. It costs as much as your nails and you get those every 2 weeks.

Rant over. Mic drop.

Do you have a horse with SI or hind end issues? Get booked in to start your own success story.

This TB gelding presented with major SI issues that had manifested into acute hind end pain. He was striking off repeatedly on the wrong lead, bunny hopping in the canter, disuniting behind. He was losing weight. For all intent and purposes he was what you would describe as broken.

His owner adores this boy and has thrown everything at him. 7 weeks into treatment and he is sound. He has started ridden rehab work at the walk.

The pictures are exactly 7 weeks apart.
