This never feels less special ❤️ I remember trying for months and months to get the lay down during the early years with Tao. It was my biggest dream. I kept asking the question and one day, he did it, but right up the other end of the arena. He got more and more comfortable being closer to me over time. It took so many little steps. Due to everything being instantaneous and at our fingertips now, we are conditioned to expect things to be immediate and get easily frustrated when they aren’t. But there is so much joy in celebrating each little step of progress, however small. Some of Tao’s tricks have taken years - like the classical bow. Spanish walk took around three months. It’s supposed to take time, especially when we are learning ourselves. Enjoy the process ❤️. The end goal feels sweeter when you know you’ve not compromised your relationship or rushed your horse.

Come and join Liz and I for a coffee morning this Sunday 19th January at 11am - 12.30pm at her lovely yard in Churt (GU10). It's free to attend and you don't have to be a client - all welcome. It's a great opportunity to connect with like-minded people, have some meaningful conversations and learn about some of things we have planned for 2025. Please message Liz or myself for the address, if you don't have it already and let me know if you're coming so we have an idea of numbers. We hope to see you there!

Being ‘too soft’ is just another way to say ‘too kind’.

Being ‘too soft’ is a common insult in the equestrian world. But what does it mean? Being too soft not to kick or whip your horse when they say ‘no’? Too soft not to reprimand them when they are just being a horse and communicating? Too soft not to make them ‘respect you’ when they’re scared or stressed?

My horse is glad I’m ‘too soft’. You can educate horses without punishing them. Punishment breaks trust and damages relationships. Whereas being kind improves welfare and relationships 🥰.

All behaviour has a purpose so it’s up to us to work out why a horse is behaving in a certain way rather than just shutting behaviour down. A horse who is pushing through people may be on restricted turnout and chronically stressed. A horse who won’t stand at the mounting block may have back pain or an ill-fitting saddle. A horse who has separation anxiety may be in pain and feeling vulnerable without herd mates or have had a stressful weaning. There is always a reason.

When I first bought Tao, I had many people tell me. ‘He’s too much for you’, ‘he’s dangerous’, ‘you’re causing that behaviour’, ‘you need to teach him some manners’. I suffered horrifically with anxiety and had no self-confidence as a result. It made it so much harder and those comments changed my behaviour towards Tao. It damaged our relationship and I wish I knew then, what I know now.

I have so many people apologising to me in a first lesson with something along the lines of, ‘I know I’m too soft’ or ‘I know I let him get away with a lot’ - it breaks my heart because other people have made them feel that way and being kind is not something to be ashamed of, it’s their greatest strength. The immense pressure from other people is the number one reason people make choices they regret with their horses. Pressure to ride, to do more, to treat them a certain way, not to act on signs of pain and discomfort because they’re told ‘they’re just being naughty/ disrespectful/ rude’.

So the next time you’re told you’re ’too soft’, say ‘thank you’. It’s a wonderful compliment ☺️.

MERRY CHRISTMAS from the clicker trainers🎄Maja put together this awesome video showcasing some of the things that can be achieved with clicker training 🥕 None of these behaviours were trained using a whip or stick and the horses are free to leave and say no (but of course, they don’t want to). Their comfortable body language and happy expressions are really important to us ❤️❄️ Aren’t the horses (and mule!) awesome? ❤️

What a wonderful Christmas clinic at Nodwood House Equine 🎄 It was the perfect location with the most beautiful decorations around the arena and even Christmas lights! (Thank you to Katie and Jamie for looking after us so well). Big thanks to everyone who came - you all looked fabulous and I’m so proud of all you achieved 🥹The fact all the horses approached the obstacles with confidence and curiosity is a reflection of the strong relationships with their owners. Clicker trained horses really aren’t flapped by much 😂 Already looking forward to next year!

How to Build Confidence with Clicker Training 🥕❤️

This was actually the same session 😂 I just put my elf outfit on for the ridden bit. No way was I setting all that up twice 😅. Of all the things I had set up from inflatable candy canes, to giant baubles and the agility arch (that he’s never seen) - he was only scared of the Christmas presents 🤣🙈

I always allow him the space and time to check anything he’s not sure about at his pace. Loose rope, calm talking and body language while rewarding any sign of confidence. The fear was short-lived. Tao built positive associations with the scary object and became confident with it. I really don’t want big reactions during training - even this snorting is a rare occurrence. It might be exciting to watch when horses go over threshold, but learning doesn’t happen when they’re in fight or flight and they will make negative associations with whatever the scary thing is as well as the handler and even the arena.

Here, Tao quickly realises that it’s very rewarding to engage with the Christmas decorations. Many positive associations made between things like this, me and the arena over the years have meant he wasn’t at all bothered by anything else and he actually finds it enriching.

He isn’t just a ‘safe’ and ‘confident’ horse. In fact, he was very much the opposite when I bought him and didn’t want to leave the safety of the herd. You can build a horses confidence with training and you don’t have to use flooding or excessive pressure until the horse shuts down. You can make desensitisation fun 🤩

Why is he so dramatic 🤣 👑 He takes it very seriously when there is a target involved and kicked it clean out and of my hand 😅.

The moment they join the dots and get 3 steps 💪🏻 the third step with the Spanish walk is always the hardest because they have to move their back legs too. I couldn’t get my camera on fast enough to get the first few but Melody had a lightbulb 💡 moment. Some lovely trot work at liberty too. Hard to believe that Melody wouldn’t trot in hand for years! It’s all about motivation 🥕 very proud 🥹 Gail is a wonderful owner and really puts the work in.
