Christmas Present reactions! And other treats.

I have just done my duty and opened Sam's presents for Spot and Beamy.

Spot turned his back for the grand opening and refused to even sniff his wonderful new browband which is meant to turn him into a proper dressage pony. The nearest he came to a thankyou was allowing me to touch his bottom (over his rug of course) with the browband. It is a gold and silver colour and looks admirable when I hold it up against his distant face.
He watched me replace it in its bubble wrap, for later.

Beamy has a bag of Banana treats with a re-sealable bag. I showed a treat to Spot as I thought we ought to remain friends after the browband terror. From experience I held the treat tight so it could be examined rather than spat onto the floor. Finally I presented it on my palm and after much hesitation it disappeared into Spots' mouth. A small victory for me.

I could tell Beamy was up for a banana treat as she managed several immediately in quick succession. I was really pleased she enjoyed them as she still has a hardly touched lickit hanging in her doorway.

Lickits were recommended for Jupiter when he was on box rest and Sam found they were a fraction of the price in boxes of 10 or 12. When the box arrived and was oppened Jupiter turned his nose up at them. After taking them round to see what several other animals thought of them and getting the same response we gave Beamy one which she crunched into, disintigrating it!

Beamy is our eat anything pony so we gave up on the box of lickits, as though cheaper by the dozen they are very expensive crunched into pieces on the floor. Beamy is always hungry so recently the lickit box reappeared and after a few licks is still hanging lonely on her doorway.
I have hidden the Banana treats out of reach.

Jebeth Sunspot.
I have a new camera and haven't got on top of all the buttons yet so apologies for the blurry picture.

Spot went to Chipstead RC dressage yesterday after a long break at home. He spent his warm up time trying to get to the little Welsh A who was screaming for his friend. (Spot isn't his friend, but thought he should come to his rescue anyway!)
Finally it was Spot's turn in the arena and apart from looking slightly worried at the white dressage boards he managed to do a decent Prelim test. After an hours rest in the lorry he had to go out and do a novice test. He was pretty knackered by that time having already done more exercise in the day than he had done in the last few weeks. He did manage to break canter and clearly thought he had overdone it!
The classes were quite large so we were delighted when Spot got over 71% + and 2nd place in the prelim and 4th with 67%+ in the novice. The prelim was won by the Welsh A who Spot met in the collecting ring and totally ignored. (it was a man pony).

Obviously horses can be sensitive to distress calls of others and get upset by them. We had wondered if Spot thought it was a mare calling but clearly not!!

Off to do another Novice test today. Expecting Spot to be too tired to do the test with lots of canter, but hoping he will surprise Sam!

Miserable weather.

Tardis and Panic are occupying themselves eating the fence.

Can anyone suggest a cheaper feeding material... though they don't look too poor on wet wood.

Jebeth Jupiter strikes again!
I am thrilled he is proving such a good all rounder.
Amy just sent a photo of him winning his first NPS Arena Eventing class on Sunday.
There isn't much he hasn't been good at since Amy had him backed last May. They make a lovely picture. Well done both of you. x

Another little treat this morning.
Spotty has removed his front shoe again!
At least he hasn't managed to remove half the fence like last time.
He is now in his stable resting after a night of chasing up and down the field!
At least no-one can claim he is not fit!

Jebeth Beam Me Up (Beamy) and Sam went to their first ever Trec competition last Saturday. They did a bit of practice during the week, though the things they practiced seemed to get the worst marks!
There is a 'different' dressage test which went quite well apart from forgetting to halt for 5 seconds at the end. The next element did go quite badly to be honest. It was on a slope and Beamy had to walk fast and trot slowly. Sam had opted for these speeds as Beamy doesn't do the canter slowly bit yet. She did find the walk and trot sections confusing!
The last part was negotiating lots of obstacles which was fun and there was lots of positive advice from the judge.

The bonus was Sam and Beamy got placed 2nd out of around 10 animals in the novice section and pony and rider had a good time!

This was really good fun and plenty of room for improvement. Anyone who knows of Trec groups around the Surrey area please let us know.

Lady Lilibet Queen of Diamonds
Another of Jebeth Milkyway's cremello daughters.

This was Lili as a foal, and now, as she has just had her second birthday. She is growing into a lovely mare for her owner. Thank you for the photos Rachel.

Late last Sunday afternoon Sunspot caught his shoe in the bottom of the horse netting in his field. He struggled and managed to pull up 8 posts and a huge length of the horse net. As his shoe came off he got up and galloped to the opposite side of the field shaking with fright.
If I hadn't been standing watching this disaster we would not have had any idea what had happened.
Spot is a stallion and that bit of the field is the place where he and Milky Way can glower at each other across the 40 yards of open space.
The only injury we can find on Spot is a mark on his side which may be a puncture wound. We are watching it!

I rang local contractors and got a wonderful knight to come round on Monday morning and mend the fence with one of those wonderful banging in post machines!
Such a relief - The stallions can glare at eachother as much at they like now!

Last years hay bale out in the field as the grass isn't what it might have been in a dryer year. Tardis, already fat, is aiming for 'Welsh show condition' - not that she is going anywhere! (I don't want her THAT fat!)

Grass cut wednesday. 126 bales stacked at the farm Thursday and Friday. Rain forecast over weekend. Bye Bye Summer.

Jebeth Sunspot having a look round the showground at Priory after several months off recovering from his sarcoid op. He gained 2nd place in a big prelim class, though he did have a small hiccup in the following prelim. (horses have very long memories..... we are still learning!!)
