✨ Not just a haircut ✨

I’m always banging on about your dog’s groom not being just a haircut. There’s the nails, keeping pads clear blah blah blah Nicola! 😉

But last week I had another example of this. Obi came for a visit and I was asked to look at his paw once he was on the table. He’d been licking it but his owners couldn’t see anything in it.

After his bath I was able to determine the problem was from the ankle down- I could hold the leg without any issues.
Using the dryer I could see there wasn’t anything in his feet, a few matts between his toes- but this isn’t unusual when a dog has been excessively licking/ chewing. So then it was time for the squeeze test! Where is causing the pain? By gently squeezing I knew it was just the ankle.

What’s around the ankle? The dew claw! A quick inspection (at a funny angle with my phone torch because he knew I’d found the spot!) and I could see he had damaged his claw, probably out on a walk. It was at an irregular angle and right up by the base where it connects, the outer layers had come away 😩 Once I knew that I could check other areas around his ankle and spotted his foot was slightly puffy - which you’d never have spotted without really looking and comparing ankles.

Firstly, now I knew, I could avoid holding that area and make the groom more comfortable for him.

But secondly, I was able to get photos and let his owner know- they probably wouldn’t have noticed otherwise with all his fluff! They could then book an appointment with the vet and get him help ❤️

Dog groomers ARE NOT VETS. We cannot diagnose. But! We do see your dogs often enough to know what is normal not only in dogs, but for your dog personally. We know what your dog normally looks and feels like and have our hands on your dog more than your vet.

We are able to highlight something that we think you need to know about like new lumps, bumps, rashes, redness and even damaged dew claws! Then, with the information we give you, you can take them to a vet for a diagnosis and if needed treatment.

Never underestimate your dog groomer and the importance of having your dog groomed… it’s never just about a haircut 🩷

🪮 Brushing and combing in the hot weather 🪮

Last night I gave Yaya a really good brush and comb and then got rid of all his dead undercoat.

I’m so pleased I did! Look how much came out 👀

The lighter grey pile is from brushing and combing, removing knots, random bits of grass and half our local fields! The darker pile is his fluffy undercoat- I am spending the elbow aching time trying to get his natural coat back after being clipped and whilst on the whole it is working, it’s a lot of work! 🙌🏼

I was telling him (yup I have full conversations with my dogs!) that it’s really important to get this hair out and separate the rest of his coat; especially now we’re going into a warm week. So I thought I’d share the same analogy with you, as I did with him.

When our duvet is one thick piece of material it keeps us warm in bed. But if we were to shred the same duvet into strands and try to keep warm it’s not going to do very much.

The same goes for your dog’s coat. If there is excess coat or the hair is clumped together (which naturally happens) or starts to knot and matt- it creates the thick duvet and air cannot get to the skin. The ‘duvet hair’ is stopping it.
But when we brush and comb it, the strands of hair separate, we remove excess dead coat and stop knots and matts forming, which means air can get to their skin.

Dogs need air flow to the skin to help cool them down- just like when we’re in the car and stick our heads out the window and the air passes through our hair and cools us down ☺️ If you stuck your head of the window with a duvet in front of your face, you’re not going to get much air to your head and probably won’t cool down much, if anything.

👉🏼 So, quick reminder, pick up the brush AND COMB and help keep your doggo cool this week 😎

☀️ Summer Holidays ☀️

The summer holidays are here and in full swing by for everyone now!

So, as always I like to remind everyone to please check their summer appointments.

For the next 6 weeks I can guarantee it will be the busiest time for me with regards to sorting appointments…. Please prove me wrong!

This time of year is when the “I need to cancel and I need to swap” messages come in and it is extremely stressful.

I am currently booked for about 12 weeks now. Please bear this in mind when you message me.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the cancellation policy.

2 days notice - 50% of your total bill
Day before or on the day- 100% of your total bill.

Please do not not be surprised when I come looking for this money- nobody wants to suddenly have a dent in their pay at the end of the month and I am included in this.

First time in the new bath for Prince! 🤎

And I definitely felt the difference on my back! This bath is higher up which means there’s less bending and struggling- especially with a dog like Prince… he has sitting down syndrome and trying to reach in and constantly get him to stand up (that bum won’t wash itself! 🧼) is hard work!

This bath will hopefully allow me to groom for years to come and keep my back going!
Grooming is a very physical job so it’s important to protect your body 🩷

🗳️ TODAY’S THE BIG DAY! 🗳️

I think this is probably the biggest election day in my voting history.. but more importantly it’s day!

A few reminders if you’re taking your dog with you today…

🗳️ The polls are open 7am- 10pm… plenty of time to work the walk around voting!
🗳️ Bare in mind you may need to queue, so it might be worth taking a handful (bag if you’ve got a dog like Yaya) of treats
🗳️ Some polling stations allow dogs inside.. mine doesn’t because it’s a school ☹️
🗳️ Take a voting buddy… one can vote the other can be on dog watch- then swap!
🗳️ NEVER leave your dog tied up outside alone or in the car by itself. It takes seconds to steal a dog.

And of course, most importantly get a picture of your dog outside… because did you even vote if you didn’t get a picture?!

📔 DIARY INFORMATION ‼️ 📔

I’ve had a few people messaging about booking in for September. Just to let everyone know I am holding off opening any further months for a few weeks.

Why? A few reasons..
🩷 Before you know September is open and then Christmas! Mentally none of us are ready for that!
🩷 People are usually more focused on their summer plans so the end of the year isn’t really thought about just yet
🩷 July- September are always the months where cancellations and changes occur- I can only assume it’s to do with kids being off school/ the weather! I have no idea why, but it’s always the same so I always wait a little bit to open the Autumn diary
🩷Mentally, I like to slow it down a smidge and not be thinking 3 months in advance the whole time so this is the perfect opportunity!

As always I will send out the ‘diary open email’ in a few weeks to let everyone know.

🐾 REMINDER 🐾

Last week I sent out some ‘send to all’ messages. It is much easier for me to do this from the appointment system as I can send to a number of/ specific people all at a click of a button.

There has been some confusion about replying.. if it comes from the appointment system you can’t reply. If you would like to reply/ get in touch generally please either contact me on the work mobile: 07522 773788 or via Facebook or email.

All automatic reminders and group messages will come from the system- which will say it’s from Woofit.

The mobile will with have my number or whatever you’ve saved me in your phone as.

Sounds confusing… but basically if it starts Woofit you can’t reply! 🤩

Remember when people say “buying from a small business doesn’t help a ceo buy a third holiday home, it helps support a family”?

Well that’s exactly what you’ve done!

In January 2023 I decided to save all my tips throughout the year and whenever someone came into the salon to just buy treats or just have a nail clip plus all my Christmas tips and ‘have a drink on us’ money (all correctly accounted for in my accounts, just saved in a separate pot!)

And this is what I got! We had a long weekend away in Suffolk with the boys 🖤🩵

Thanks to you supporting my business, you really did support my family and we had a much needed trip away together. We were so lucky with the weather, we walked in meadows and woods, went to beaches and went in the sea. We had ice creams, sat in a hot tub and snoozed in the sun. We had the best time 🩷

Thank you all for always supporting me and my business 🩷

No third holiday home here, but I’m still loving life 🌊

💙Today is WORLD PARKINSON’S DAY 💙

Last week a lovely lady reached out asking for support to raise money for a Parkinson’s charity and I couldn’t say no.

This is my grandad who sadly passed away in 2010. He was the best pear peeler, dolls house maker, sunbather, cuddle giver and would always get shouted at by my Nan for feeding the dog at the table when we all had our Sunday roast!

My grandad had Parkinson’s, a progressive neurological condition, towards the end of his life.

It’s the fastest growing neurological condition in the world and we still don’t understand what causes it. There are many treatments to help with the condition, but researchers are still trying to find a cure.

I have volunteered to have a charity pot in the salon and hope if you have any spare change- no matter how small, you might consider donating it to this charity to help fund research.

I know it’s not dog related, which is what my normal charity collections are for, but it is ‘Nicola related’ and behind every small business there is a human 🩷

I’m often told people don’t get to see their dogs on the socials, or asked why their dog isn’t used (when it is!)… the simple answer is because you just don’t see my page 😢 Those darn algorithms!

Shedding season is upon us!

I often get asked what tools I use on short haired/ double coated breeds. The truth is there are so many!

The tools I use are tailored to the dog on the table and their coat. Some dogs are quite boney, some are lumpy and some just don’t like the feeling of certain tools!

I use a minimum of 2 tools on a dog usually more for a really thorough job!

The best piece of equipment? My amazing high velocity dryer! It gets so much hair out and saves a bit of work on my arms and back!

👉🏼 Ensure your dog is booked in for shedding season before the masses of coat starts coming out!

Welcome to the Woof It family Wilbur! 🖤🤍

Wilbur came to visit a couple of weeks ago and even I was surprised by how teeny tiny he was even at 12 weeks!

He was so good and full of confidence and cuddles!

I used to groom Wilbur’s owners old dog before he sadly passed 🌈 so it makes Wilbur’s arrival even more special, knowing his owners have chosen me to groom their dog again ❤️

Welcome to the Woof It Family Poppy! 🩷

I used to groom this family’s old dog and when they got Poppy I wasn’t taking on new clients. When they saw the books reopened at the beginning of the year I was thrilled to see their name pop up!

Poppy isn’t a fan of grooming so she is super short to avoid lots of drying and brushing and it means she’s free to splash in the muddy puddles without her owners having to worry about getting her clean.

I am always happy to work with difficult dogs as long as they are on the correct schedule and we do what is best for the dog - not just the best style. Poppy’s owners are fully on board with this and I’m seeing her again in a few weeks 🩷

I’ve noticed a lot of crusty noses on the squishy faced dogs over the last few months. So, I’ve decided if you have a brachycephalic dog (Frenchies, Bulldogs, Pugs etc) and they’re in for a full groom, I’m going to add on Nose balm complimentary as part of their package from now on.

The nose balms I use are specific for dog’s noses and are made with natural ingredients 💚

Dogs of Vienna 🇦🇹 The salon is now reopen after my long weekend off work. We visited Vienna- highly recommend it was fab! Of course we set ourselves a challenge to get lots of dog pictures 😂 I had loads of emails and messages over the weekend for August appointments- I will get back to you all in the order I received them. Please don’t message again unless replying to me as this will mean your message moves down the list. See you all soon 💕

This week I’ve had 4 messages from people either needing to cancel or change their bookings last minute. That’s a £290 potential loss for me… in one week 🤪 Let’s not forget I could be having the same conversations next week and the week after and the week after (you get the idea!). BUT I didn’t lose a penny! 💰 Why? Because I have terms in place to protect my business AND the most fabulous customers who completely understand the reasons why I charge or they juggle things to make sure they don’t miss the appointment! 2 customers have paid, in full because they had to cancel their appointment the day before- £160. One even said “my personal life is not your problem and shouldn’t effect you” 🩷 1 rearranged her plans so she could make the appointment as I didn’t have anywhere to move her dog to- £65 (1 of the cancelled slots not big enough the other was a day she couldn’t do). 1 is getting her mum to bring the dog instead so the dog is still groomed and I still get paid- £65 🤔 Imagine if your boss at the end of the week/ month said to you- by the way we’re cutting your pay by £300 this month, we know it’s through no fault of your own but somethings come up so things have changed… You’d be pretty pi***d off! I still have bills to pay- both business and personal, whether you turn up or not- which is why I strictly enforce my policies (which are never a secret, there’s a sign up, it’s in the terms and conditions you sign and in every appointment email and reminder emails and texts) 🩷THANK YOU TO THE MOST AMAZING CUSTOMERS THIS WEEK! (And all of those that always just transfer the money when you have to cancel)🩷 You know who you are and believe me when I say I value you all and your custom more than I could tell you- plus I get to sleep knowing I can pay my mortgage this month! 😘 🎥 You can tell who out of Douglas and Yaya is up for a dance video and who isn’t! 😂 Watch the end… this is Yaya’s

💰 What you pay us isn’t what goes in our pockets… Like every business, groomers have so many costs to come out before we see our wage every month, especially if like me, they’re using high quality products on your dogs. And of course there are the things we pay for that are annually and/ or legal requirements such as PAT testing, fire extinguisher checks, scissor and blade sharpening, continued education, equipments servicing and repairs, a pension! A high quality service using high quality products is what is best for your dogs, but it costs us to provide this for you. ✨ Businesses have costs which are sky high at the moment, small businesses are really being affected. Please always support small when you can 🩷

We’re well and truly in muddy dog season! And if your dog is anything like my two and enjoys jumping in muddy puddles, home bathing can be an essential part of home grooming. But it’s important to make sure you’re doing in correctly to make the most of the benefits… 1️⃣ ONLY USE DOG SHAMPOO. Some people think using baby shampoo is ok. It’s not. Humans (including the small ones) have a different PH to dogs. Dogs also have less layers of skin- meaning they can absorb much easier than us. ALWAYS use a dog shampoo. FYI- I sell individual bottles of the shampoo I use in the salon if you’d like to keep consistency on your dog’s skin. 2️⃣ Make sure you really get down to your dog’s skin. Using your hand to really scrub down and move the hair follicles. Whether you are trying to rid your dog’s coat of microscopic irritants (pollen, dust, the residue form that scented candle in your home) or just wanting to remove the mud from their walk, it’s really important to clean the skin as well as the coat- otherwise it will all just sit on the skin, block their pores and make them itch… and smell! 3️⃣ Rinse, rinse rinse! Once you’ve washed right down to the skin, it’s important to make sure you now remove all the shampoo. Excess shampoo in your dog’s coat is actually an irritant, no matter how wonderful and natural the shampoo you use. It’s not designed to stay in the coat and on the skin long term. Irritation = scratching = sore skin and even open wounds= possible infections 😩 👉🏼If you’re unsure how to home bath your dog just ask your groomer for tips or book in with them for a wash and blow dry to really make sure you’ve got the job done right! ✔️

Dog groomers just cuddle and play with puppies all day! Yup sometimes! It’s a hard job but someone’s got to do it! 😜

Is there anything worse than watching someone eat?! Mr Woof It is a lucky man to see this every night at the table 🤣 On a serious note, over the years there seems to be this weird badge of honour that dog groomers like to parade around wearing- they’re just so busy they can’t stop for lunch! Ummmm 🤨 Why?! My salon is fully booked for the rest of 2023… and every day that I’m working there is a scheduled 30 minutes to have food. 1️⃣ I get hangry when I’m not fully fuelled! 😂 2️⃣ Food = fuel. Fuel keeps me going. Dog grooming is a physically demanding job. I don’t see people down the gym not fuelling their workouts! 🏋🏻‍♀️ (Or at least we can all agree they should be!) 3️⃣ If you can’t afford 30 minutes during the day to prioritise your stomach and feed yourself… you need to increase your prices so you can afford to💰 4️⃣ If your customers won’t wait for you to finish your lunch or are banging on the door wanting you to let them in… then SEE YAAAA! 👋🏼 They do not deserve to be your customer! Not once EVER has one of my customers questioned why I was sat down eating my lunch (and they know the response they’d get if they did!) 👉🏼 Work smart, over working yourself every day and not eating is not big and it’s not clever 😉
