Importance of building a relationship with your puppy…

Something I always educate my clients about is foundation work. Whenever I say foundations a lot of people assume starting to teach basic positions like sit and down and also luring, when it isn’t the case. Foundations is a huge bundle of objectives I like to tick of the list before I start to push my dogs obedience, for example, engagement and recall around as many distractions as possible. Exposure (environmental work & socialisation) is arguably one of the most important elements of dog training, people either tend to forget about this or do incorrectly. These are just a few examples of what I like to implement immediately.

Most importantly having clear boundaries and limitations in day to day life.

Today we had 5 month old Holden in for his first 121 session.

we worked on creating more engagement around distraction’s, also covering plenty of puppy foundation work we like to apply at a young age to set them up for success.

Engagement is just one of the fundamentals of dog training, which is arguably the most important, also most misunderstood. Setting your dog up to fail in their socialisation is very common with most dog owners. Wanting their dog to be friendly with everyone and every dog they see and owners to encouraging their dogs to interact and play with the distraction can potentially cause frustration, reactivity or worse. Milo the puppy came to visit us today to work on some foundations and the first few steps towards being more neutral around dogs and moving vehicles.

Also quickly smashed his loose lead walking at the start of the session to set him up for the future

Kiba had her first 121 Session today, covering foundation work and setting her up for a successful future. Also covering minor puppy issues we needed to correct.

Pablo on his first 121 session with us working on his reactivity towards dogs, which wasn’t as bad as initially thought by owners.

Starting to shape behaviours with leash pressure and pushing him to get closer to dogs with a clearer mindset.

Handsome Milo had his first 121 Session with us. Owners had some concerns with regards to his attitude towards dogs and other distractions, which was initially thought to be aggression based. Turned out to be frustration caused by unnecessary tension on the lead, making him react with a high level of intensity. After a change of equipment and different techniques, we have him walking great on the lead and also introduced the correct way to socialise him with dogs and busy environments. Hopefully with work outside of the session pushing his ability to be more neutral and ignorant towards his surroundings.

Narla had her first 121 Session with us, working on her reactivity towards pretty much everything, on top of that head down and pulling towards every smell possible.

Her first session went great introducing to her how to walk with a slack lead making sure no tension is created between owners and dog.

Also decided to bring one of our head trainers dogs to evaluate the backbone of her reactivity, which she handled great once we shown her what mindset she should be in.

Today we had Patch in for his first 121 Session with us working on building his confidence around traffic and also working on his lead manners.

Definitely us a challenge to start with but once he understood what we wanted from him, we were away.

Chrollo had his 3rd session with us, working on his frustration towards dogs and how to create a more neutral relationship towards them. He is also starting a protection program with us to put all that drive into some work.

Athena came for her first 121 session today working on her confidence building as she is nervous around strangers and new busy environments which causes her to act out in an aggressive manor.
